Florida State-Georgia series cancellation is ominous sign for future of college football
It almost sounds like a chicken and egg thing... Not sure which was the initial driving force, expanding top P4 conferences, or the push to bigger and more CFP fields and games, but either way, as I stated last week, it looks like CFB is going to become more NFL-ish where traditional rivalry or any top teams match ups that are now OoC will quickly go away and the 24-team field is where all the interesting action of top OoC teams playing each other will happen... Maybe with an expanded field of 24 teams, they can at least then have more home team playoff games in the first two rounds before the final 8 teams play in bowl sites.
Hopefully, this trend won't severely handicap ND from scheduling top p4 OoC matchups... Presumably, with every P4 team needing to schedule at least one tough OoC matchup and now with the field being 24 teams, with proper lead time and effort, ND will have no problem scheduling at least a few top matchups annually.
From the article:
These new schedule mandates, playing nine conference games like teams in the Big Ten or the former Pac-12 did for years, as well as the expanded playoff, now mean that
schools are looking for ways to minimize their downside. Instead of prioritizing the upside and providing a better and more meaningful experience for fans.
It’s been that way for quite some time, unfortunately.
But this new era of super conferences and bigger postseason tournaments is only making it worse. Most fans would almost certainly prefer to play these big games in a home-home format, even if it means an extra loss. Most schools now don’t seem to care.
