Would love to hear a definition of "out toughen"

It's really not that hard to think about, if u don't show up ready have it pounded at you play after play, your not gonna beat Stanford. It was Harbaugh's style at Stanford and with the 49ers and Shaw looks like he is gonna continue it. It's common football talk to say I u have to be tougher than the other team, did u watch the winter workout video? All about being mentally tough

Just saying it seems like u just love questioning me TT

What is Power Hour Christian?

Ha ha, it should have read, "On Power Hour, Christian said..."

Power Hour is a live show on ND football by the guys at ISD. It can also be podcasted if you can't listen live (7:00 eastern on Mondays).

I just think Stanford is good. They dont "out toughen" anybody. There just good.

I think they out-toughen teams AND they're really, really good.

Yea i am thinking there will be a fairly decent drop off at Stanford this year. That is a hell of alot of talent to lose in one year.

Offensively they should struggle. They lose 2 great OLs, Owusu, and Fleener in addition to Luck. They have two highly touted QBs that could step in for Luck... but they won't play at his #1 draft pick level in their first year. It's funny that in the 2009-2011 classes Stanford signed 7 QBs. They signed 3 QBs in 2010 alone + 2 in each of 2009 and 2011. That's insane. And to me it means they weren't very confident in who they had on the team after Luck. Although Josh Nunes and Brett Nottingham had solid accolades coming out of HS.

Defensively they could be great next year. They should have elite LBs and some solid DBs. And that alone might be good enough to get 9 wins against their joke of a schedule.

They may lose 2 really good OL, but they've recruited well at that position the past few years, especially this last year. Granted, they will be Frosh this year, but in last years game against Southern Cal, Cywnar got manhandled by a true Frosh, so that doesn't mean squat to me.

Besides your one anecdote about Cwynar (an undersized and physically limited DT) getting handled by a true frosh from USC (which I also don't even remember specifically because our entire DL got handled that game so it's all a big blur of sadness to me... what was his name?) it is commonly accepted that you practically never ever want to start a true frosh OL... or if you have to, you're in for some serious growing pains.

With that being said, they could easily start guys they've had on campus awhile. But even then I find it highly unlikely that two fresh starters play at a 1st round NFL draft pick level. No matter what way you try to slice it you can't say Stanford losing 4 1st round NFL players on offense isn't going to take a big step back. Even if all of the new players play at a high level above what is expected they'll still be worse than last year.

I expect them to lose to USC and Oregon. I hope/pray/believe we will beat them, and I think that they could end up with one more loss. Maybe Washington will have enough offense to beat them. But I just think that the drop off fom Luck literally running half of the team will be very evident this year.

I'm honestly not even sure if Cwyner played in that game lol.

My question about Stanford going forward is will David Shaw be as successful as Jim Harbaugh.

I really don't think so. Has Stanford recruited well over the last few years, sure. But what big time program hasn't? Having several years of great recruiting classes hasn't helped Notre Dame get better that 8-5 over the last few years. Andrew Luck is a very special QB that willed that team to a great deal of their wins. USC, Cal, Oregon and Cal have all had as good or better recruiting classes as Stanford recently, some even much better. That's where QB play and coaching come front and center. I expect Stanford to return to normalcy.

We'll see how much support Shaw has when they go 6-6 or 8-4 this season.

I was making fun of the phrase, "out toughen." Nothing against you with that one. I believe the phrase is "be tougher than."

I was a little skeptical of you. You came on here acting like a pain in the ***. I asked you nicely to learn to assimilate to the board. I thought you were a kid with a connection to Ezekiel Elliott with a 30 day free pass to a subscription site and thought that the posters on those sites were more knowledgeable than the ones on this board. You have since acted respectfully and added updates to the board. I question a lot of people because they confuse personal emotions/sentiments with the objective facts in regards to recruiting.

I apologize if I came off as abrasive there.

This yr will show how good a coach shaw is, he's brought great classes in but some could credit it to Harbaugh, the new coach rush, and Stanford's academics. His talent is young but he has a easy schedule in which he only has 3 games (ND Oregon USC) that are forgivable losses, he loses more than those games recruits like Randolph will question him and Stanford might fade back to oblivion. That being said if he can win 1 2 of these games that would mean another good season and he'll prove himself as a great coach and pastures will continue to be green

Late to conversation. "Outtoughen:" The act of collecting native species of grasses. As in - He was outtoughen in the field.

I hope, though late, this was helpful.

(TT you abrasive? NEVER!)

"Outtoughen" is closely related to "Outturffen", "Outpeatten", and "Outboggen". We have a lot of experience that no one "Outbogs" a certain IE poster. This of course has nothing to do with a fine young OLB prospect named Doug Randolph, whom I would very much like to see playing for ND.

No information.

If he wants to be a business major that would be good news for ND, right?

It's pretty even. ND has one of the best undergraduate programs in the country, Stanford has one of the best graduate plans in the country. You can't really go wrong with a degree from either. I would say this is one of the few instances where academics doesn't help us out.

He looks like a DOG which makes me wonder if we do land Jaylon Smith, what other position could he play. He looks to thin for ILB.

Jaylon plays the ALLOFTHEPOSITIONS spot. I think we are ok.

But seriously, I think we like Jaylon at CAT with the ability to move all over.

Yep. Sapp has said that he's heard we like Jaylon at CAT. I don't see it (he seems too light for CAT and effing PERFECT in every way for DOG) but I'm no coach. I guess, like GITF says, they figure Jaylon has the athleticism to do whatever he wants out there. I could even see him as a Luke Kuechly-like WILL.
