A couple things:

If not "gettin' any" was truly a reason fro him to leave, then I blame this on Beau Benken. Hey, we've all hit some rough patches and droughts when it comes to the ladies...so I think Beau shoulda had some bona fide slump-busters from Ball St. at the ready for him. Why, Beau??? How could you let this happen to us???

As far as the question/comments about ND not taking Juco players, well...it sounds great to do this...on paper. The reality, however, is much different. Most of the kids that transfer into Notre Dame have a lifelong dream and desire to go to Notre Dame. Maybe they didn't quite have the grades or scores to get in the first time, but damnit, it's their dream to go to and graduate from Notre Dame. So they'll take the long, difficult, strictly-disciplined road to achieve this dream. And more power to them! Juco football players, on the other hand, are usually quite different. By and large, these are kids that can't get into the Ole Miss', Mississippi St.'s, and Kansas St.'s of the world. And their dream is to play footbaw...usually at whatever State U that is going to water-down and make the "academic" process easiest for them. Notre Dame does not now, and will probably never, take these kids. And more power to ND on that!

That's a hell of an overreaction to some bad midterm grades if true.

Yup. But I also think it's super plausible. Especially if he was trying to do the engineering track. That FYS stuff is no joke. I guess we'll see where he ends up and best of luck to him in the future... unless it's at USC and then I hope he has an injury free career, gets a good degree, and plays awful against us for 4 years.

It's just shocking to me how quickly this all seemed to change/happen.

Maybe it was the mild winter in Indiana this year? He came to SB expecting it to be colder than a witches t!t.

After sitting back and looking at how things unfolded, I too believe it has to do with grades. He was everything Irish just a couple days ago. If grades are the case I hope he takes the Julius Jones, Darrin Walls, and Gary Gray route and comes back. He is a very good kid. This may just be a wake up call for how much extra help he may need, nothing wrong with that.

I know a few people who glided through high school with ease then had major trouble in college. It happens.

One more scholarship for this year

So what, we can finish the year with 7 scholarships open instead of 6? While teams like Michigan load up?

Oh well... Next man in.

Errr, who dat?

This is why ND football will never again be considered elite. This is just another black eye in a string of them. Why play BCS level football at a school where you are going to flunk out?

That seems like a statement made mostly out of frustration. It's just not true. If we can land elite players like Tuitt, Lynch, Gunner, Neal, DD etc etc there is no reasonable excuse to not be competing at a championship level.

The case of Deontay and Tee was rocky to begin with and eventually went against us for multiple reasons.. It happens. We lucked out with Prestwood and Carlisle.

But to think elite players won't want to come here and succeed academically and athletically is just plain wrong IMO. Part of the reason I'm such a big fan is the fact that these kids at ND are challenged at multiple levels in their college experience. It makes it that much sweeter for everyone when they succeed.

Unfortunately, the past three coaches before Kelly bred a culture of mediocrity and he's had his hands full righting the ship.

He is the first coach in a long time to show deep rooted change. The type of change that might not blind you right away with a ten win season and a "New Gold Standard, Return to Glory" soft cover pile of crap but the type of change that delivers a quality, lasting football program from the ground up. Be patient man, it will happen.

Or you can always go root for someone else if it makes you that unhappy.

4 CB's on scholarship is terrible and really none of them have much experience. I'll close my eyes each time a deep ball is thrown this year.

ok...this isn't good...I'll give you that...

but I cannot see how it would be any worse than last year...

denard beat us with passes that looked like punts...can't get worse than that.

If this is academically motivated then I feel bad for the kid. Either way, I wish him the best.

My main frustration comes in the form of what he and he who shall not be named may have cost us in terms of recruiting. Yes, the team would be better with the two of them on board, assuming they were ready to do things the ND way. However, imagine a world where Tee was never on the radar and Darby was our only DB crown jewel last cycle. I'm not saying it's impossible that he still would have had a change of heart and headed south to FSU, but it's also very possibly that if he felt the love - which he certainly would have felt more of if Tee wasn't in the fold - then maybe he would have stuck around.

I dunno, maybe I'm just grasping at straws...

its a bit of a knee jerk reaction over one mid term grade, its not like there is no way back :/

This is what I'm thinking too. His tweets one day were positive, next day he leaves?

Strange.

Even if he doesn't come back, it's not the frigging apocalypse as Phork would have us believe.

Amir just got cleared to play this year freeing up the possibility for Theo to take another shot at the slot and have a break out season like Jonas. Have Davonte at CB and running kicks/punts?

Not so bad...could be a lot better, but....

Cierre Wood; GAIII; JoshA; Niklas; CamR; [off the top of my head], and a few "formers" like Clausen et al...... yep let's abandon the whole state.

The guys playing this upcoming year were those guys backups... Thats how it can get worse than that

The 5 star players and 4+ stars want to go to the NFL, and in general, don't want to deal with demanding academics.

I like your thinking NOT!!

I know people say i make some dumb comments sometimes but this is crazy. We have a WR going first round and Safety going early to mid 2nd round. IF it wasn't for the fact that Manti and Tyler wanted to come back we would have had 2 first rounder possibly a third. Worse case 2 first and 2 second not bad if you ask me. Along with 3 other 2 rounders which 2 of them are starters. And the third one got thrown to the wovles in carolina. We do put players in the NFL/.

It appears now we have lost both our balls and swag. Good thing ND wasn't built on either, but rather our minds. Judging by the last several pages of this thread, we are starting to lose those too.

After convincing myself this isn't a big deal, I see this thread persuaded a guy to post for the SECOND time in FIVE YEARS. Guess it is a big deal afterall.....

True, we still get plenty of top talent, are able to get plenty of top players that want to be at ND for ND, and are able to put guys in the NFL no problem, but to the extent that Terry44 just meant that Tee may have decided he wanted an easier route to the NFL, he might be right. Didn't Tee tweet something recently about college only being 3 years? I'm sure he wanted to be at ND (at least originally; he sure seemed like it) but his focus may also have been on the NFL, and he may have decided there was an easier way to get there.

I still say we don't know the full circumstances and shouldn't make assumptions. I really hope we find out more soon though. How a guy as gung-ho ND as Tee could drop out so fast truly makes me curious.
