this has been bothering me a bit...

i apprecisate versatility too but at some point does anyone think/feel having "jacks of all trades masters of none" hurt us a bit? (no defined and specific position that can go right from HS to ND playing)

not sure ive 100% bought into the mindset of "lets recruit a guys wth Dog LB" measurables who plays TE in high school and see what happens" etc etc.

why not recruit the damn Dog straight away? LOL

Zbikowski was an option QB in high school. Turned out to be an NFL safety. High school kids often don't play what position they're suited best for. College coaches know how to utilize their athletes better than HS coaches.

A large majority of high school kids haven't had very good college-translatable coaching anyway. Perhaps it's actually a plus that they don't have as many bad habits to forget. Kelly sticks with what's worked for him: a list of positional characteristics which are not-overly-strictly applied to recruits [see for example ideal height/length measurables for corners]. Obviously the eyeball and face-to-face tests are then the real game makers or breakers.

Regarding just going out and getting the Dog.... in todays game the elite Dog is almost as tough to find as the monster pass rusher or the lock-down corner. Ain't just layin' around out there waiting to be scooped up. We thought we had one with near perfect measurables and even eye tests at the 7x7s [Perkins] but when he bolted we couldn't catch another [unless you count Baratti or maybe even Shumate later on --- but that's back to the value of versatility again, isn't it?]

He will probably come March 24. He had a visit scheduled at Auburn that weekend so that should tell you his interest level.

Then to be on topic:

The weekend of the 23rd though that tues the 27 we hopefully get:

Onwualu, Ezekiel Elliot, Bivin, Tre Bell, and someone else

Tre Bell may want to make a few more visits, but I llike our chances. Wouldn't be suprised if Doug Randolph fliped from Stanford either.

Yeah first of all Randolph doesn't seem to enfatuated w/ Stanford and he defiantly has ND 2 ( or 1)

I don't usually play the distance card but I dont see how/why Randoph would go all the way to Stanford and pass up ND, Michigan, and Virginia if he really wants academics

People are expecting way too much IMO. Like I said earlier, I expect a WR, maybe Jaylon Smith, and maybe 1 to 2 more (Bivin if he does in fact make a visit soon is a strong possibility) by circa/shortly after spring game. I'd be very surprised if we entered the season with more than maybe 6 or maximum 8 commits.

I don't think we start picking up a bunch of commits until we start off 4-0.

We are almost in agreement ?

WR Onwualu
One more Bivin
Two more Elliot
Smith said July so by July I would say we get Smith plus someone else

Totaling 5 between now and by jaylon smith announcement, 7 commits total

7 commits by July is not overly optimistic
Also with 5 or so 4* and a 5* I would expect ppl to become more interested after smith commits

If we start off even 3-0 beating Michigan I expect the flock (charlton etc) to rethink on top of their rethinking after Bama stomps Michigan

All of u think it's crazy to have 6/7 commits by July???

We 10 had by end of summer last year Yahoo Sports: Rivals.com 2012 Notre Dame Commitments

I don't see how I'm the delusional one thinking we have probably half the commits Michigan does by August

Really says a lot about u guys faith in nd football if Michigan gets over 5 commits in one weekend but it is blasphemy against the all knowing mods if I say we get 5 commits in 5 months????

May and June have been REALLY slow times for commitments to ND at least in the past two cycles. So although one might predict on past recent history a "half-full" class by season's start, predicting it by the beginning of July would not be consistent with our current experience. If it happens, great. I'd say: root for April; that's been a more productive month.

i'm just looking forward to the spring to see our actual on field product at work and watching which group of guys will step up (Daniels, Bennet, Wood, Brown, Smith) to name a few.

imo our next will be onwualu, all signs pointing to us as long as the urban offer doesn't make him go crazy.

As to that: when we were recruiting Ben Koyack, and he came to the Spring game, I'd bet a bunch of vbucks and even some regular ones that Kelly somewhat bent the offense a little out-of-normal to fling it all around to the tight ends. If you guys remember, Ragone was nearly the star of that game.

So, which recruits are coming to the spring game, and how might we see the Master Psychologist massage his offense [or defense] to appeal to them??

I do remember that but didn't he commit before the spring game began? I just remember getting tweets while I was in line in the bookstore of recruits committing before the game.

Only one I can think of off the top of my head is J. Smith coming to the game.

i like your faith! i internally believe this, but realistically not going to due to poor performances on field..and past history about recruiting..big thing to understand is that most of the people who have committed to programs are in-state commits and most arn't 5*s...iike j smith is
