Eifert passes on NFL, returns to Notre Dame

The biggest prankster on the Notre Dame roster again has created some smiles around the program: Tyler Eifert will return to the Irish in 2012.
The junior tight end will pass on entering the NFL draft, his father, Greg, told the Tribune on Friday, after a methodical decision-making process that, at one point in recent days, had him leaning toward leaving school despite a third-round grade from the league's advisory committee.
And Eifert's decision is no joke for Notre Dame, set against the backdrop of an arduous 2012 schedule.
The 6-foot-6-inch, 250-pound tight end's return staves off a profound retooling of the Irish offense as the Mackey Award finalist gives the Irish the desperately go-to passing game weapon the program was losing with the graduation of record-smashing receiver Michael Floyd. Eifert recorded 63 catches for 803 yards and five touchdowns in 2011.
On a less tangible level, Eifert's call makes Notre Dame 2-for-2 in underclassman decisions this offseason, with linebacker Manti Te'o announcing in December that he would eschew possible NFL first-round millions to return for his senior year.
Eifert informed Irish coach Brian Kelly of his decision Friday.
The draft outlook wasn't quite as enticing for Eifert, who received a third-round grade from the NFL's underclassman advisory committee. Eifert was rated the fourth-best available tight end by ESPN, though two other prospects rated ahead of him had yet to make their stay-or-go decisions.
"Eifert could very easily move into the first round with another good season or two," said Scott Wright, president and draft analyst for DraftCountdown.com. "Another year of development both on and off the field would certainly help his chances at the next level.
"Also, Eifert would most likely enter next fall as the top-rated draft-eligible tight end and wouldn't have to compete with guys like (Clemson's Dwayne) Allen and (Georgia's Orson) Charles for a draft slot."
