Good hire by Kansas. I think he will do a good job there. I will be pulling for him.

I always liked Charlie. Sure made for an exciting offense. It's pretty clear now in hindsight that we lacked the player development (mostly strength and conditioning) and defense in his tenure to made it to the next level.
Hope he rectifies these discrepancies in his second H.C. stint and has a successful run at Kansas.

My three areas of concern:
1. Offensive line under Weis was mediocre, at best. Clausen was running for his life most of the time and no one else was doing much running in our offense.
2. Strength and conditioning. We consistently faded later in the year.
3. Defense. The rumors that Leavitt might be the DC would go a long way to calming that fear.
I think Weis learned a lot each year at ND. Seemed like he would have continued to improve, but that the fan base just wasn't having it anymore.
This is going to be fascinating to watch.

I still think this was bad for him. THere is going to be openings at the NFL where he had a ton of success. I think he would be better coach at the NFL level then college.

I appreciate what he did at ND...obvioulsy it didnt turn out, but he made a contribution at ND that we still see today. I wish him the best.

Charlie is a smart guy. I think he will make the necessary adjustments at Kansas and he will have some success. I have no idea what the ceiling is for your Kansas program, but I could see Charlie turning it into a pretty competitive outfit.

I know they probably caught lightning in a bottle but in 2007 they made it to the Orange Bowl and won. That year they didn't play Texas or Oklahoma though.
So I think he could have some success especially if he can bring a prolific offense there.

i always wish old members of the Notre Dame family the best, and same to Coach Weis. I think that he's up against a very tough situation, though.
As we know too well, getting a team "up in the world" is not just imaginative coaching, but you REALLY need the players. Here are a few facts about Kansas and recruiting:
A). they've been laying on the numbers these past years [20-25-20-and this year 27 freshmen]. There is a lot of youth there. [Also notice that this adds up to well over the 85 "limit" so there has been a fair amount of "attrition" there --- whenever you have that AND you're not particularly successful, it points to problems of some kind].
B). With that numbers influx, who can you really get? In this year's freshmen group there were seven O-Linemen, one being a long snapper I'm guessing by his weight. Well, 6 O-Line might be good. None, however is higher than a 3-star. There were three DEs --- ALL SPEED DEs --- NO defensive tackles!! The only four stars were two offensive skill players. [and there were two three star QBs].
C). Coach Weis was a great recruiter [for whom he went after; we can argue about his ideas of a proper mix], but he had "ND" to help out. I like Kansas as a University, but, fair or not, it has gotten tagged with the "basketball school" thing which plays a role in recruiting it seems [see: Duke; Vanderbilt; Indiana; Kentucky]. Once you get screwed with that it's hard to shake.
The thing about being in the Big 12 is: how are you going to out-recruit UT, OU, OSU, TA&M, TT, and now even Baylor in Texas? And if not in Texas, then where? I don't doubt that Charlie will upgrade the QB/WR situation, but where will the defensive tackles come from?

He could be talking from personal experience. As I recall there were a bunch of players that transferred from ND or quit football after Charlie became head coach.
Besides having no head coach experience, his history of hiring assistants was poor and management and personal skills were lacking.
He was hired as head coach of a major program. A full time job at a hefty salary but he took the noble position of fullfilling the obligations to his NFL employer for the next 6 weeks. Instead of getting a staff on board and hammering away at recruiting he game planned for the playoffs. Both the hiring and the recruiting suffered.
His time management took a severe hit when Cutcliffe had a heart attack. Weis hired Vaas but Weis spent an inordinate amount of his time coaching the QB and being the OC rather than being the HC. Polian was a great young recruiter but bounced around from one coaching position to another trying to find a home. Vaas got sacked over a recruiting issue and Ron Powlus got his first coaching job. Defense was always a grabbag from Minter to Corwin Brown to the Co-Defensive Coordinator Disaster with Tenuta. The OL and DL coaches weren't very successful at their jobs.
Best thing Weis can do is hire assistants and realize his job is to be the head coach not try and do the assistants jobs for them.

I thought the reason he went to Florida was to be with his son? Why would he go back to Kansas?

Yes, he is. KU went WAY out of their way, rolled out the red carpet, and pulled out all the stops to get Weis

He opened up with KU is 2-10 and KSU is 10-2 - why?
Commented on the time constraint difference between NFL and NCAA 20 hour a week player limitation.
Asked what was his one problem at ND he responded, "Have you got an hour?" He than noted that he had not been a head coach before. He hired some people on staff that he had never met. He went on to stress the importance of staff chemistry. The difference now is he KNOWS coaches across the country personally. He also noted he'd be hiring a strength coach soon.
Asked what he know about KU football. "Not much". Asked what's the most important thing to change, he replied simply, "The record."
He also commented on public statements. He stated he's more experienced now. "Your statement can be right but your presentation can be better made."

Got into player turnover with a new head coach. "How many players will leave?" Typically 10-15 leave because the change doesn't feel comfortable to them." "13 left after I came to ND. Can't say that I regretted all of them leaving."

Local media was mixed on their reactions to the presser.
Tom Keegan of the Lawrence Journal World was fairly impressed. Interesting article this morning (LJWorld.com / Lawrence, Kansas) about how he's a Jersey guy that he can see other people not liking, but that he likes. 810 sports radio thought Weis was awkward.

He will be a better head coach the second time around. So much stuff he was not prepared for when he took the ND job, which cost him dearly in the end. I truly believe he has pinpointed these things now and is ready to be a successful head coach.

I still didn't comprehend how his daughter is staying in Florida with his wife...? I was only half listening. Could someone break it down for me how they are handling that? I felt so happy for him and his family when he was talking about how much better his daughter was doing at her new school and how she seemed so much more happy.
