Any word on how Joe has looked? I don't recall seeing him on any of recent practice videos. He is a very intriguing player.

It's a shame that no one ever moved his thread into the top section. tsk tsk tsk...

He was actually in the Wednesday, August 10th video on und.com of the rodeo drill. he is #38 at the 2:44 mark going against #72 Nick Martin. You can hear a coach in the background say "there you go Joey!"

From a 247 article today by Wes Morgan:

Freshman walk-on Joe Schmidt (ILB) keeps popping up on the travel roster and might do more than that soon.

“He’s a good player, tough, physical, got a great sense for the ball,” Kelly said excitedly. “He’s just in a tough position. But he’s going to play for us. That guy’s going to be on the field. He’s a football player.”

We've discussed the possibility of giving Crist, Goodman, and/or Golic a 5Y if we miss on a few blue chippers and end up with a 2012 class of 20-21. If Schmidt continues to produce for us, he may earn his way into one of those marginal 5Y scholarships.

I was just thinking about him yesterday actually. Good for him. Maybe Longo can cut him down to about 215, add a little speed and we throw histail at some safety. Kids got a nose!

One of my best friends is a geography professor; he never knows where he is. The only known person needing a designated driver while cold sober.....

Lol. He's got a few years to figure out the campus. :)

He seems a bit nervous cause his voice is a little shaky, but let me just say again, I really like this guy.

What is in the water out there? Troy and Joe are both really impressive, likeable kids.

What a genuine young fellow. A little more age and his engaging shyness [and stammer] will moderate and be gone. While I can't see how Kelly could squeeze a scholarship anytime soon, I really hope he gets one before he's through. [plus a lot of tackles].

At one point in the interview, Joe talks about Notre Dame helping him to become a better man. It sounds like he is well on his way to his goal. Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt, you've raised a fine son. Joe may be young, but he is a far better man than most already. Hopefully, Notre Dame can reward Joe with an excellent education and some dream-fulfilling football experiences. He is already an excellent ambassador for everything Irish.
