Not to take away from Jones' thread, but aren't Penn State fans just a little too full of themselves and their coaches abilities on defense? They are good to be sure, but it's not like recruiting against USC in years past or FSU & Miami from a while ago.

I'm not sure how many All-Americans they have had, probably a decent amount, but over the past 11 NFL Drafts Penn State has had 7 defenders taken in the first two rounds. We've had four.

Tamba Hali is really good, Poz is decent, and the rest are average players or worse. The NFL isn't swimming in Penn State defensive talent, and you can only live off of glory from over a decade ago for so long.

Plus, we're Notre Dame. It's not that hard to figure out that we can get the best recruits in the nation.

Back to Jarron Jones!

JC Shurburtt from 24/7 also believes he had the look and ability of an awesome left tackle.

i remember reading something like that too several months ago...it might have even quoted his coach saying how good he could be at tackle on offense...eitherway he's going to make us better and he's a huge pickup...literally.

From the ISD Article

“I just woke up this morning and said, ‘This is the right thing for me,’” Jones told Irish Sports Daily.

I think Diaco pulled Inception on Mr. Jones. Works for me!

None of our four were Justin Tuck, either, who was (incredibly) taken in the third round, and Tuck is better than anyone Penn State has produced in that time frame.

with now jarron jones comming to ND, does anyone else think that maybe ND would be better off switching to a 4-3 defense? with two recruiting classes BK will have built increadible depth in the front seven but in a 3-4 scheme is it to much depth. with lynch, tuitt, troy n., nix, springman, ishaq, councell, hounsell and jones how are you going to play all these guys, it's a nice problem to have but is it a problem. have lynch and tuitt at DE with guys like nix, springman, day and jones rotating at the two DT spots with ishaq, troy n. and counsell rotating in at DE for lynch and tuitt.

The years of Weis are gone. We're not switching defenses every year. We are building depth. Remember LSU's DLine a few years ago? Terrifying and deep. That's what we need. Especially with a high tempo offense that won't be on the field long.

Our linebackers don't fit a 4-3 look either.

I don't understand why anyone would want to move to a pure 4-3 from Diaco's hybrid scheme. We currently enjoy the best of both worlds.

Talk about underrated coming out of college. PSU can't touch the talent that Tuck was/is.

The Penn State board on this is hilarious. One of the posters there did break it down like it should be broken down..

You can't give our staff credit and say that kids are coming here for the right reasons, and then, when a kid chooses ND over us, go accusing ND of being snake oil salesmen and questioning why a kid would ever go there. Again, like it or not, ND is a terrific academic university, with ethical standards far exceeding ours, with more football tradition and history than ours, and with a coaching staff that is hell bent on turning that program back into what it used to be.

You are sounding like a sore loser, appoo.

BOOM!

Wow, just saw he committed. Awesome get. Seems like he is really confident in his decision and won't waiver, which is nice after last year. That d-line just keeps getting stronger. Maybe now a LB will commit with all those big boys in front of him.

They did make a good point ... how in the hell do they manage to ever pull in a good recruit with all the "issues" they see in the staff's recruiting? hmmm...

He's better than Courtney Brown and Lavar Arrington too.

Haha. This is comical. I can see the poo guy screaming at his computer.

"You just told me all I need to know about you and your fandom.".....LOL that guy over on that board is a trip. Maliciously attacking anyone who makes a rational response.

lol what cracks me up is look at the 5 5:s: defensive linemen we "inexplicably" got. This guy is just off his rocker saying Kelly is a "snake oil" salesman if you look at how these recruiting sagas went down:

1. Lynch - loved Notre Dame, spread his grandfather's ashes around the lakes, got lied to by the FSU staff and also had fishy business with his HS coach that his mother has alluded to, and came back around.
2. Tuitt - liked Notre Dame, flipped commitments after an OV where his coach was involved pushing him to GT and saying "Stephon is not talking to anyone," and then his mom said no more BS and after a meeting with the ND coaches recommitted.
3. Ishaq - from an area with no regional ties, got won over by a 4:30 AM visit showing how much our coaches wanted him. JoePa was also awake at this time, but decided to hit up the Country Kitchen Buffet instead of making a house call with perfectly coiffed hair.
4. Sheldon Day - from Indiana, how is it a "mystery" that he came to ND?
5. Jarron Jones - always a soft verbal, said he was going to stay open minded, took a visit to ND and immediately decommitted, then locked it down for ND. His other choices included Penn State (who he still likes), UNC (who fired their coach), Louisville, etc. He is from an area with no regional ties. How is this a "mystery?" He just liked what ND had to offer more than what PSU had to offer. Football aside, most unbiased students across the United States feel the same way.

And then you could add Tommy Schutt as #6 to this list... but we were full and he is now a Nittany Lion.

I'm sorry they can't grasp that our coaches are energetic and dedicated to recruiting. I'm sorry they have an inflated sense of entitlement to recruits with no regional attachment to Penn State. I'm sorry they have a warped opinion of their defensive coaches and how good they are at producing pro talent over the last decade.

But none of those issues are our problem... and they won't be resolved until the mythical creature that is JoePa retires. By the way, I had my brother (soph at PSU) read those posts too and he thought they were just as ridiculous as we think they are. It's asinine to think Penn State should win any recruit not from Pennsylvania. That doesn't mean they won't or can't do it, they're a very good program with good history, but it shouldn't be expected as a forgone conclusion.

We gave them Schutt, and they're still grumpy! Ingrates.

Now the poo poo guy is claiming that the ND coaches coerced JJ into saying what he said about PoSU. I respect JoePa for what he did there, but eventually you have to admit that he is more of a hindrance to the program than a help. He was one of the last coaches to play true freshmen even when they were the better player. For years he refused to recruit PA or even offer scholarships because PA kids should want to go there.

Every school recruiting blog has its version of that guy though.

Our school is good...no other school is good...

It often devloves into: Our school is good, but he chose another school. Therefore, he doesn't want to go to a good school.
Or, he was lied to.
Or, he's getting paid.
Or, [insert baseless NCAA violation here].

No worries. We got Jarron.

Sorry for stating the obvious, but this is a huge pick-up for this staff. One, because he is an elite talent. Two, because perhaps this will help with Mahone and Reeves.

The talent this staff is putting together on both lines is pretty impressive. Time to add about five playmakers to this class to round it off. A top 5-10 class is certainly attainable.
