Face it.

It's us versus the south. :p

We don't even have to win and we're still hated in the south more than OSU or PSU or any other northern school.

I figured it would come down to a fan base voting as many times as they can-sticking a spear in the ground does not compare to the simple eloquince of 'Play Like a Champion Today'. Anything with a costume and an animal does nothing for me. Go Irish.

And Prestwood :)

By the way, Lax... Was that you who brought up the thing about the Cleveland Indians making up the "Chop" that Free Shoes U uses? Actually, that would be from the Atlanta Braves...early to late 90's. Got pretty sick of watching it while the Tribe was playing them in the World Series. ;)

Whiskeyjack, ACamp, et al.:

Keep in mind that I am, by and large, a wise-*** with my tongue firmly planted in my cheek. I really have no problem with a Leprechaun as ND's mascot.

I just think that the Leprechaun Logo, as it stands, is ugly. As my son pointed out, his "splayed" stance is not only unnatural, but terrible form if one is boxing.

How Notre Dame went from Clashmore Mike as a mascot to a clownish depiction of a Leprechaun is something I may never completely understand. The research, even in these days of Google, Yahoo and Bing isn't worth it to me.

I'll repeat an old, wry comment from Ara's Era (when I was at ND – and I don't recall who said it): Why is it that a football team, at a University founded by French priests, coached by an Armenian-American and a roster with more Polish-Americans than any other ethnic group; is known as "The Fighting Irish?"

Hell, I even came up with a couple of home-grown Irish jokes while working with lawyers over the years: 1) Why are there so many Irish lawyers? It's a perfect match. What Irishman could resist getting paid to talk and argue? 2) Why are there so many Irish law school grads not practicing law? It's tough for an Irishman to pass ANY bar!

Actually dshans I believe if you look at the boxing stances from the early 1900s the stance is correct. When I'm on my laptop I'll see if I can find anything on youtube.

May it never be otherwise.

If not the Fighting Irish, how about the Gentlemen Pugilists?

Behold my proper stance

It's even more ironic now that most of our team isn't even Caucasian.

If that's true, I admire the boxers' flexibilty. Try facing east, pointing your left foot due east and your right foot (heel to heel) due west. Report back on just how stable and powerful you feel!!!

A left, a right, a left jab to the stomach, a right cross to the head; a combination to the chin! One, two, three ... nine, Ding, Ding Ding! And the winnah by a knockout ... to the fighter with his feet facing in the same direction!

I'm pokin' fun here, but seriously; try the stance our logo leprechaun displays.

A hater tsunami has hit the polls. The people in the comments are so ignorant of ND. But hey, I guess that comes with the hate.

Hoenstly I think the stance in general is pretty correct. With just a slight tweak, if one foot is due east, the other one normally is pointed around south. But when trying to draw that image, it would tend to be kind of difficult, or would look fairly awkward.

Google or Youtube Max Baer and watch him or anyone that he fights. It is a very similiar stance to the Fightin' Irish stance

And Prestwood :)

Funny story, I had a beer with an FSU second teamer the other day. I asked him what he thought about Prestwood and he said,
FSU:" I think he'll be good."
Me: No, i mean about him leaving for ND.
FSU: What?
Me: Yeah he just transferred.
FSU: I didnt know that, i figured he was lifting at a different time. He was soft, we have a very complex offense and he wasn't picking it up.
Me: I thought you said you thought he'd be good.
FSU: Huh?
Me: Academics are important too.
FSU: Huh?
Me: Exactly

This is absolutely crazy......33,000+ votes in the first day!!! We barely got over 60,000 total votes against Georgia.

WOW....Michigan/Nebraska 50/50 right now with over 60,000 votes

I tossed in a couple more votes. Also tossed in another one for Michigan (only because they are on ND's schedule, otherwise, both UM and Neb are the same to me.) Both have solid tradition. Neb tunnel stuff is rather boring. Why the hell a horseshoe?

I really don't see how FSU can be considered a "tradition" school. Odd man out.

Story time:

A girl I dated in high school wound up at FSU to the chagrin of her father. He was a Gator. He was a very strait-laced, proper guy. Anyhow ...

She had a party one year around Christmas when we were out of college and old enough to drink. Keep in mind that I'd never seen the man with as much as a beer in his hand, even while watching football on a Sunday afternoon. He'd clearly had a few that night.

He pulled me aside at one point and confided that as a Florida grad he had little respect for FSU. He told me that in HIS day, since FSU began as a teachers college and was women only, the Gators referred to the Seminoles as "Semen-holes."

I damn near spit my scotch all over him!

This is immediately going back into heavy rotation.

While I like Clashmore Mike and would like to see him come back for gameday...I'm not so sure he'd be a better mascot in terms of putting him on merchandise.

Beautiful dog yes, but I think the leprechaun is better and fits in with the theme of "Fighting Irish."

Didn't the leprechaun and CM co-exist for a while anyway? I don't see why we can't bring the dog back out.

I'm Irish (well, half), and I am not offended by the Fighting Irish logo. Actually, I think its kind of awesome. I do prefer the interlocking 'ND' as the primary logo, but as a secondary logo its pretty cool.

People always want their logo to kind of bad-***, right? Well this:

notre-dame-fighting-irish-logo-leprechaun.jpg

is kind of bad-***. I do understand resentment toward caricatures of your identity, but I also think people would be well-served to embrace some of the self-deprecating stereotyping as long as it is good-natured and in good taste.

Agreed but I wasn't sure what else to call the logo. It looks like a visual representation of the "Fighting Irish" nickname, no?
