For the last freaking time... how serious the injury is depends on the degree of the sprain.

This is true..

In the differing degrees of sprain, isn't a 3rd degree sprain usually a slight tear though?

I thought I had heard that somewhere and wasn't sure.

Close. Grade 1 = inflammation. Grade 2 = partial tear. Grade 3 = complete tear.

Lombard, Nuss, and Golic can all play guard. RB is a different story. I say tough it out in spring and get CamMc and GAIII "next-man-in" ready if Jonas and CamR are not in the fall camp. CamMc will be able to spell Cierre; GAIII will be able to do a package.

If it is a "grade 3" then they would call it a torn MCL not a sprain

That's simply not true. Most times when someone injures a tendon you don't know the true severity and they report it as a sprain. Then they take an MRI and figure out how bad it is.

It is not a big deal, but you "sprain" ligaments (ACL, MCL, usual ankle injuries too) and "strain" tendons (rotator cuff, hamstrings). Ligaments connect bones while tendons connect muscle to bone. Spraining and Straining essentially mean tearing. To what degree is usually interpreted with a MRI but a plane film x-ray could show evidence of bone spurs pulled from their origin as well...

Either way, surgery is preformed in a limited amount of MCL injuries due to the high vascular supply, so rehab will be determined by ability to function and presence of pain. Without knowing anything in particular, 4-6 weeks is a good estimate though he did injure his hamstring (mechanism looked to be a possible MCL too) and any recurrante injuries obviously take longer...he will be fine by fall camp.

Where exactly did this information come from? It has not been reported by any of the other ND affiliated websites. Also, don't they just lift on thursday? I thought practice schedule was Monday, Wed, Friday, Saturday. How could Jonas get an MCL today?

Link please

This news is very unfortunate and I hope that both will be alright and get healthy. At least these injuries happened early in the process and not right before the start of the season. Wish both of these kids the best of luck and to a speedy recovery.

Chris Watt has a sprained ankle. Was seen walking around the Gug without crutches on Friday, per ISD

Nobody wants these guys to even have a hang nail let alone an injury that sets them back. With that said steel hardens steel and this must be done. Injuries open up opportunities for other players and it is the nature of this nasty game. What I see in the drills is guys really pounding each other to get better. They're getting deep enough to handle it. I'm not worried yet.

I don't know the severity of Gray's injury, but he was in the UND practice video walking around with just sleeve on his knee. Didn't look too severe, but I'm no dr.

Jonas Gray has a calf strain of sorts, per Kelly. Will be back Monday. Chris Watt has a high ankle sprain. Questionable for spring game.
