Oh my God that's terrible. DD was one of my favorite Bears and Irish players ever. The guy was a class act in every sense of the word, and will be missed dearly.

*I met him in 2000, and he let me try on his Super Bowl ring. I'll never forget how awesome he was.

RIP DD

It is very sad. Only 51 yrs old, that is young. My dad is only 52. I cannot imagine what his 15 yr old child is going through.

Sad news.

The article mentions a 15 year old named Tregg was at home. I think that's an error. Dave Duerson had a son, named Tregg, that was on football scholarship under Willingham. After his parents domestic issues, Tregg transferred to Hampton a Div II school in VA and played a year there. He transferred back to ND a year later and played interhall ball. Don't know what happened to him after that but he'd be about 25 now.

It happens a lot to ex NFL players. I bet steroid use has something to do in a lot of cases. Regardless, rest in peace Irish brother.

I would not want to jump to any conclusions about cause of death. There are lots of reasons for persons [even athletes] to die at age 50. Just as an example, I used to teach genetics. There are genetic syndromes such as hyperlipidemia or hypercholesterolemia [and other similar things] which are deadly with two genes, but with which you can live apparently hale-and-hardy for many years and then WHAM here's the heart attack at 50 or so. I mention this because I want to think the best of Dave Duerson, and neither steroids nor suicide fit my image of him. God bless you, young man, as that is how I knew you.

I was simply saying that it is the case with a lot of the ex players. The cause of his death could be anything really, and I just don't know. The fact is that when Dave played, people weren't inform of the after effect of steroids. It wasn't as much of a big deal to take them... Then again, not everyone took steroids either.

Duerson lived fairly close to us when he was with the Bears. One day we saw him with his kids at the park and I remember being scared to go up to him but I got my first autograph from Dave Duerson. I was probably only 7 or 8 years old. Rest in Peace DD.

How very sad! I met him when he went to the Hula Bowl in the early eighties in Hawaii. I was about ten at the time and he was a very nice guy who took the time to talk with me at some length. Of all the Irish players that I met personally when I was young, he was one of the nicest guys around. So sad that he died so young. May god be with him and his family. RIP.

I don't "hate" much of anything, but I hate the ending to this story.

and...the fact that his brain is going to the head-trauma research project suggests something else that's the "dark monster" in football's closet that we REALLY wish was not there. Dammit!

Really sad to hear. Him donating his brain leads me to believe he suffered from post concussion trauma. Really sad the league has taken this long to start acknowledging this.

May he RIP

First off, prayers to his family. The down side to football is the injuries, as well as the depression that alot of players suffer from. Jeff Burris comes to mind as having suffered from depression while playing for the Bills among many others. These men have the same emotions as everyone else which we at times forget. We can only hope that modern science can come up with ways to better cope with these ailments.
