One door closes,

One door closes,

I'm hoping that ND offers this kid with our recent decommitment. Seems like a versatile kid with high character that can help this program in a variety of ways.

Another door opens. I hope this kid gets an offer.

Wow that surprises me about the Bearcats but i would think we have an advantage with Troy on board. It could be a sweet pick.

Good for him. As a high school athlete, your dream is to play D1 (if you can't play at your dream school). Now he has a chance to play D1 football and get his education paid for, in a BCS conference no less (cue Big East joke). He has a choice between playing for free at a school he knows little about, vs. paying upwards of $200,000 to get a premiere education and play for a former national powerhouse on the rise - at his dream school no less.

Tough call!!!! I wish him luck and may he choose what's best for him...

I'm sure Kelly could find a scholarship laying around his office somewhere. We did have offers out to Huggins, Niklas and Haynes all at the same time.

One of the guys at the 4HL knows Schmidt and says Schmidt apparently does have offers from a few schools but has turned them down because he wants to put a premium on education.

If Stanford offers he will likely go there but he is warming to the idea of walking on at ND

Kelly said 5th years are not final in his PC. I really don't think that he is going to come to ND if he has to walk on, and he shouldn't have to. I hope the coaches have a change of heart and offer this kid. I feel like this kid could be Clay Mathews-esque.

Losing this kid not to another school, but because we wouldnt give him a scholarship, is a loss I think we will regret.

Apparently it's looking good. I've heard his family has enough money that a scholarship doesn't really matter and he is going to go to the best place for him to both get an education and play football. Unless he gets a late offer from a good academic institution on the west coast (i.e. a Cal, Stanford or USC) he should be coming to ND.

That's all hearsay though.

Apparently visiting today and he very well may be a preferred walk-on in the fall next year. Looks like he could be one heck of a special teamer and certainly has a nose for the ball. Going to absolutely love having someone with D1 offers on the team as a walk-on. Hopefully he turns out to be a diamond in the rough and earns a schollie at some point.

Well said. What a feel story good if we get this kid....for Notre Dame fans anyway.

I believe that someone said it earlier in this thread, but he is friends with Niklas right? Assuming that I remember that correctly, that certainly helps in our pursuit of him. Gotta love the competition that Schmidt faces in high school too. Also, Kelly definitely seems like a guy that would allow him to earn a scholarship in the future.

Lax-Can you provide any updates/insight that you find out? Thanks!

Yes, word on the street (and why he isn't taking an offer from a place like Cincinnati) is that:

1. He is friends with Niklas.
2. Dad/family are big ND fans.
3. His Dad is pretty loaded and a scholarship is not a necessity for him to go to school.
4. He really values education above all else and was therefor only considering schools like Stanford, ND and maybe the other strong academic schools in Cali.

None of this can I verify... it is all second hand info from other people and other boards.
