The ND background. Try to keep up little deer.

I clicked on it and even signed up for the damn site, and all I see is his mug. I clicked on some stuff, and all I see is him in a red shirt. I am so confused. Lot's of negative messages to him from disgruntled Cinci fans.

I was a little disappointed at first that we couldn't get an already elite coach like Stoops or Meyer, but the more I read and hear about Kelly the more I love this hire. I really think the best hire we could have got! GO ND

Who do you think would be he hungriest to bring us back to glory. Stoops and Urban have already been to the top of the mountain. I don't see either guy winning another NC but I see future greatness and a legacy in the making with BK. Nothing against Charlie but he pissed off alot of people with his Jersey style. Hoepfully Kelly can win everyone over. They say he is quite the charmer.

With all the talk about our current rank and where we'll be in this first top ten issued by the playoff committee on Tuesday. I can't stop thinking how lucky we are to have BK.

Thank you Coach Kelly.

Seconded. Crazy how things change in half a decade. Five years ago I had never watched ND play and figured they hadn't been good in half a century and would never be good again. Fast forward to now and I'm a junior who can't finish my Differential Equations homework because Kelly has gotten this team into every playoff projection article on the internet. Thanks, coach!

Brian Kelly - you can become one of the legendary Notre Dame coaches. Please stay here and do it. You are the best fit for Notre Dame since Ara.

True Notre Dame fans understand and do not expect National Championships every year. They hope for a tough, disciplined, Fighting Irish football team that gives their best and never quits.

No more quitting. Give your best. Love Notre Dame and play with passion generated by this love.

Intelligent and thoughtful followers of Notre Dame know that with the obscene amounts of TV money and increased corruption in college football, it is increasingly difficult for an honest, ethical football program that only allows STUDENT-athletes to represent it to win a National Championship.

You will win a National Championship and it will be incredibly sweet because you did it the right way, the Notre Dame way.

Brian has what he wants. He has a machine, working well, that can grind the power conferences, ratings services, and know-nothings.

Kelly is a rare form of genius. He is both a systemic football genius and a holistic programmatic genius. And, it seems that he is also an intuitive talent assessment genius. Our guy can construct an entire horizontally and vertically potent structure in the face of several non-football-optimal restraints [general and real academics, weather, location out of the South or West Coast, "religion", the infamous foreign language requirement, etc.]

We might never find another such guy. We MUST be patient and supportive of our Coach as he painstakingly constructs the new powerhouse.

... and "politically" important, the US football nation LIKES Brian Kelly. This also goes far to erode kneejerk anti-ND prejudice. Applause Coach --- long may you reign!

Dear BK,

Please no more open backfields at the goal line.

I don't know if I agree with this. Most non-ND fans I know can't stand him, though I can't figure out why. (Because ND)

Greyhammer: apologies for the unclarity --- I meant people on television making sports commentary. They probably have way more influence on general thinking about ND than people who are not on TV.

Declan and Seeburg are a couple of reasons I see. Along with leaving Cincy "High and dry",on my travel to other boards.

I have the same experience, non -ND fans HATE BK... to the point where many I know rooted hard for Saban over him in the title game... Saban.

Most cite the screaming at kids thing... i know, I know, but that's what they mention/remember.

I see the Cincy thing from time to time and it irks me. Every coach who takes another job leaves his current team "high and dry." Nature of the business.

Exactly. There will always be a loud minority whose irrational tribalism drives them to blind animosity against ND. And such fans are happy to justify their hate with whatever is closest at hand-- the Frozen Five, Lennay Kekua, Sullivan, Seeberg, Purple Face, etc.-- regardless of whether Kelly had anything to do with it.

Kelly haters break down into 3 categories:
1. The ignorant. They look at the manufactured narrative of him being a "yeller" and "mean"... all from the one game against USF 3 years ago. He's not even in the top 20 of most animated/yelling coaches, but none of these other coaches ever get called out on their stuff, and they aren't on national TV half as much as Kelly. Ignorance sometimes extends to Sullivan/Seeberg/Kekua but that's pretty rare... usually this crowd just "doesn't like him" the same way ignorant voters just "don't like" a certain candidate while knowing nothing about their platform.
2. The self-righteous ND hater. This group of anti-ND people try to stretch everything they can to be laid at Kelly's feet. He's a "liar" because he left Cincinnati... you know, after being man enough to tell all his players face to face unlike many other coaches (Franklin, Petrino, etc.)... you compare Franklin's exit to Kelly's and it's just hilarious the contrast. He also "covered up rape" and "killed a kid"... it's so important for these morons to justify their hatred for ND and make Brian Kelly a devil-like figure that everything is turned into the most fitting derogatory hyperbole they can that serves their end.
3. The legitimate Kelly hater. This is by far the smallest group and is generally comprised of people from southwest Ohio. There are also a small quantity of people (like the old Crete-Monee coach) who disliked Kelly from prior events. This is the only group of people where it's even understandable that they don't like Kelly.

As a very relevant aside, there are virtually no legitimate people in the industry who dislike or don't respect Kelly. This is in stark contrast to Willingham (not respected at all) and Weis (incredibly disliked by many). It should tell you a lot that the most informed people raise zero legitimate gripes with the man.

This is the one that drives me the most crazy. Every single time I hear it I make sure and tell them who that "kid" was and how the Sullivan family has reacted to the tragedy.

The hatred of BK leaving UC to come to ND is also perplexing. Every UC fan I know felt that as soon as the ND job came open that they were losing their coach. The fact that they were so hurt by it is ridiculous - it's not like BK wasn't open about his desire to coach at ND someday.
