Indiana has cancelled series with quite literally every single P4 pre-existing scheduling agreement since Cignetti took over
Yeah, but we also have texas threatening as well. Regardless of what Pete says, I dont trust that game will be played.

Cignetti has been very clear since the moment he took over that he wants to play ZERO P4 teams OOC

Indiana and I think PSU are the only Big Ten teams currently operating this way. Would not be surprised to see the conference mandate 1x P4 game OOC
Won’t he have to change his tune when the CFP expands to 24?

Kind of hard to argue that cancelling all of your P4 OOC games isn't cowardly. Maybe it's smart, but Cignetti's whole gimmick is he's a tough guy alpha male. He doesn't look like it doing this. Go 10-2 and see how differently he is viewed.

It's so cowardly. If it weren't for this sort of behavior I don't think I'd have any issue with Cignetti or IU. But they are perpetuating the cowardice that is ruining this sport for fans along with many other schools.

Can't have it both ways, talking all that shit about how tough you are, but shying away from playing anybody.

So ND has their heads in the sand = good
Calling Indiana cowards = not good
There is a large contingent of people (on this board and off it) that act like it is a crime to insult IU. I have relatives that grew up ND fans and went to IU and act like we should all be nice to that program or have rooting interest. "Well ND didn't make the playoff so why aren't you rooting for IU?"

The two have nothing in common. Cig struck lightening and took advantage of some really bizarre transfer and eligibility rules and won a natty. He can still be a coward who happens to have earned a ring.

It’s not just that they are canceling a big OOC game, they are canceling with THE in-state rival that would have been the biggest home game in IU history. Incredibly incredibly cowardly.
You do hope at some point the fans/alums/donors saying "we actually want good big fun home football games" might start to outweigh the coaches wanting the easiest path to the playoffs, when it comes to scheduling decisions.

Most USC people I know were pretty unhappy about them cancelling our series (and most didn't buy their spin). And I'd imagine a lot of IU fans have had this game circled on the calendar for ages. Too bad for them I guess.

There was a time when entertaining your fans mattered. Maybe we can get back to that.

The only way this happens is if ESPN conspires to rig the CFP for the SEC this season based off the scheduling difference this season. So…..possible but pretty icky thing we would be rooting for.

Ex Leave out a 10 - 2 IU/PSU etc with an argument heavily built on their 9 game P4 schedule compared to a 10 game insert SEC team schedule.

If the Big Ten's media partners start pressuring for more P4 OOC games, there will be some movement. Let's not forget that they're all beholden to the all mighty dollar

That's a great point, unless they feel their conference slates include enough marquis games... But, yes, I think the conferences are going to need to force things by conference decree that essentially mandates at least one true, tough P4 OOC matchup, however that would be determined; otherwise, ND may be challenged with scheduling solid OOC matchups.

I was really hoping that PB and his Miami AD buddy (I think he retired now or is about to) would have scheduled a more committed annual matchup outside the rotating ACC commitment (like the recent Clemson one). Having Miami on the schedule where they are right now would be awesome!

Agreed. NBC will force the Big 10 to play us later in the season if the games are needed.

Yes, almost forgot that NBC now has ND and Big 10 and can likely be the catalyst (maybe via a bigger matchup $ payout?) to make solid OOC games happen for ND at least with the Big 10.

Considering NBC jumped at the opportunity of making ND/Navy a night game last year over a heap of Big Ten conference matchups last November, I doubt that's the case lol. There have already been rumblings about the networks thinking they'd have better quality matchups

NBC in particular has gotten absolutely fleeced. They're stuck putting the B1G scrap game of the week on during prime time.

Fox hasn’t even televised any of IUs top 4 games since Cignetti took over lol. ESPN has been the biggest benefactor of Indiana television ratings.

Two things can be true:

1) Cignetti is an incredible coach and IU deserved the title last year.

2) Cignetti is a giant blowhard pussy and got absolutely worked the last time he played ND.
Bingo. Not hard to figure out why there is a villain arch here to people who aren't at all affiliated with IU.

His lil bitch behavior makes an otherwise fun Cinderella story into one of cowardice and others are following that model, watering down the regular season sport we all love.

No clue what you are talking about. I never said indiana wasn't cowards. As a matter of fact, I said they were.

It can also be said that we need to join one of the big 2 conferences, so these teams can stop running from us. Because just saying teams are scared, while our schedules still suck is also not the answer.

All due respect, "conferences are cowards so ND needs to join one of the conferences" is an odd argument.

ND has actually done a pretty passable job of replacing some of these games. USC with BYU. Locked in a long term agreement with Clemson. I'm sure they can seek out some partnerships from the Big 12 to circumvent the SEC and B1G cowardice as well.

I just don't get the argument with how well things are going right now that ND should join. Especially with talks that the playoff will expand again.

We could be in conference and this game would still have been cancelled. We added a P2 game today, we lost a P2 game today. Teams in every conference are facing issues with self motivated teams cancelling games. ND being Independent is not the issue. A sport with zero uniform rules in which the playoff structure changes annually causing short sighted ADs/HCs with short term agendas is the problem.
