We'll need a WR with some size, but yeah probably just one. At some point the younger guys aren't so young and need to get on the field.

Technically the young guys don't have to get on the field, if they're not good enough. I'm not saying they're not good enough. But it's something you have to think about in a GM role.

Especially this season coming up which if two superstar transfer WRs you could go all in for a natty.

Just things you unfortunately have to think about now

To really unlock Carr, we need speed. Carr is an excellent mid and deep range passer. Until we can regularly go over the top, his talent is largely untapped. I’m hoping to see big boundary receiver and an absolute torching speed transfers.

Did they not regularly go over the top this year?

I still think we need 2. We got lucky with very little time lost to injury last year.

Think they planned to play Gilbert a decent amount so they didn’t lose either of the top two at all but lost WR3 and WR5 for large stretches.

If everyone returns which is the signal you would have:

Transfer - Gilbert - Williams
Faison - Smith - Burress
Greathouse - Saldate/Jeffrey

The position in question there is slot in that example and I think you bank on one of the freshman can play early. Finley playing early would be akin to when Greathouse played as a freshman. Either of Robinson/Frazier as a gadget alternative more like Harrison.

We need Ryan Williams. Anyone got $5M laying around and the ability to tamper?

Fair point. I guess forget about the greathouse injury because reporting on it was so weird throughout the season. And fields/pauling/faison became such staples that we didn’t have to worry about our bench there.

ND was in 3 WR sets about 60% of the time.

So, it's not necessarily as important to have a good back up slot WR as it is to have a backup Field/Boundary WR. If your backup behind faison is better than backup behind Greathouse, faison can slip into the slot bringing in a smith or burress.

I've been a major ND fan a lot longer than 2008, but if Burress can get his act together knowing playbook and finer details, I do think he could be 4th/5th WR next year if everyone is healthy.

ND needs Cam Williams to become who we thought he would be. He’s a Junior this year. He needs to step up or doubt will replace hope.
Not gonna lie, I'm worried about this one. Based on what Merck said last spring and watching him in his limited action, I think he's Tobias Merriweather cloned. I don't see the WR skill, just an athlete playing WR. Nothing would make me happier than to be wrong, but I don't see ball skills that are needed to be a guy in the boundary and thought by the end of the year we'd see at least a small piece of production, which we didn't.

The tea leaves say this never happens. The only thing he gets mentioned for these days is a future media career. I think he’s a good locker room guy who never sees the field in meaningful action

I had high hopes for Cam do to his elite measurables and size.

He still has a chance, but he just doesn't seem natural to me finding/catching the ball. He still has an elite physical skill set, so I still have hope.

I see the doubt has already replaced hope. Me too but i still have 40% hope he could become something. Definitely dwindling and will be gone if he doesn’t have a break out 26.

Going over the top also makes short and intermediate passing so much easier.

If we just had a couple players emerge from the stocked WR room....

Burress' arrow is pointing up because of how Denbrock seemed frustrated that he couldn't play more. He loves something about his game and we know Denbrock knows how to identify good receivers. I remember how he'd talk up/get frustrated by Stepherson and Denbrock loved Fuller (obviously).

Surely 3 obvious starters can emerge from:
  • Greathouse
  • Cam Williams
  • Jordan Faison
  • KK Smith
  • Gilbert
  • Bettis Jr.
  • Burress
  • Saldate
  • Scrap Richardson
  • Fitzgerald
  • Finley
  • Bubba Frazier
  • Brayden Robinson
  • Dylan Faison

If possible, add a single stud playmaker but this is a really stocked room of WRs and we have a lot of good DBs to challenge and sharpen their skills.

For some reason this reminds me of Justin Brent. Decent talent in recruiting (I'm showing was #1 in Indiana, #8 WR on 247 at the time), but never really took off. Claim to fame was off the field, sleeping with THAT Lisa Ann of course. Damn, that was 11 years ago...

Some of the expectations for Williams may have been unrealistic. I know he was ranked really high, but his offer list was that of a 3* recruit. He may have just been overrated by the recruiting sites.
