100%.

Penn State has a longer drought than ND at the moment. Otherwise we've seen just about everyone snag one since the 1988 season. That national narrative is more prevalent now than ever before since Marcus at least managed to break the January bowl game drought last year. That fixation is going to follow the program and fan base until they finally get it done again.

The idea that had Kelly gone on to win a Championship at LSU after winning more games than Rockne at ND without a championship wouldn't have been on multiple agendas against Notre Dame is naive. At best, if I'm being polite.
I couldn't agree more Mick!

From an ESPN article...

"From his disastrous introductory speech at an LSU basketball game, in which he pronounced "family" with a fake Southern drawl that was thicker than roux, Kelly just never seemed to fit in.

And he wasn't blind to that. This offseason, Kelly worked with a Washington, D.C.-based image consultant to try to improve his public persona."

🤣

With respect to being a hell of a Division II coach, his failure at LSU has me reexamining if he was even that great of a coach to begin with.

At GVSU, he didn't build that program. GVSU went 21-3 in the two years prior to BK taking over. They went 74-7 under Chuck Martin after BK left. And during BK's 13 year tenure, he didn't win at least 10 games until his 11th year there. That was kind of shocking to me when I read that this week.
Interesting.

Wow he really is the Hillary Clinton of CFB. Did he completely ignore everything that consultant said? I noticed zero difference in his demeanor between this year and the previous 16 I’ve seen him.

In my mind, the consultant is an ND fan and intentionally fucked with him and gave him zero tips that would have helped.

In the end, I am glad Kelly didn't win a title at LSU. Everything he said about ND would have been proven correct if he had. I'm not cheering on the fact he got fired, but the fact he didn't win there and was the first guy not to after the last three did signifies he got it wrong about ND. It's great PR when his LSU record gets held up against Freeman's, too.

Kelly won more games than Lou and Rockne at ND, but didn't win a Championship. He couldn't make it four coaches in a row at LSU to win a Championship either. That's ultimately his legacy. Dude was one hell of a Division II coach that ended up cashing in, winning a lot of games, but never won a Championship at the Division I level.
I will say, having Franklin and BK fired this season and forever being right over PSU and LSU fans feels pretty good.

D.C. respresents everything Americans hate. He would've been better off with a Pyongyang image consultant. Such a BK move.

There's a pretty good comment in the reddit thread on Sampson's piece about BK being let go. If one of you mutants wrote it, good job.

It’s a small footnote that’s easy to miss in the Sampson article but the fundamental issue with Kelly is how much stock he puts into his DII success. Sampson called it out in his one sentence about how Kelly would remind reporters on a weekly basis how long he’d been coaching. It’s way more than that. I worked in the media relations department when I was a student. Kelly not only drove that talking point into the ground, he was extremely adamant about his “winningest coach in college football” designation which included his Grand Valley State record and his DII championships as a source of his credibility whenever questioned by the media. It was a fundamental part of his self image and ego.

If you’re coaching at a blue blood or new blood with championship expectations, no one cares about what you did at Cincinnati, they certainly do not care about what you did at Central, and thinking they would care about what you did at GVS is downright laughable. That’s why he doesn’t “fit” at programs, because he thinks HE is the program and that they’re lucky to have him and his four decades of unbridled success at mid majors and DII. He forces the programs to fit around him, and his brand. That worked at ND for a really long time because the president was an academic who was apathetic about sports and didn’t want to be bothered (still and upgrade over Malloy’s outright hostility), the AD, while serious about athletics, never truly believed ND could be back as a meaningful powerhouse and measured success by being in the conversation, and a large portion of the fanbase was so beaten down by the Malloy years that they thought this new standard was good enough. But even with those relatively low expectations, Kelly still wore thin and was told to feel free to walk if he thought he could do better. LSU is a rabid environment to be in with sky high expectations and very recent success. The Kelly way was never going to fly there. No one is bigger than the program over there and I’m glad ND finally got the self respect to realize that Kelly wasn’t bigger than our program either.

That’s the rub with Kelly.

Saban was prickly at times, but he actually won important games.

Kelly has been all hat, no cattle for 3 decades.

I dare you to find a coach of his “caliber” that won zero BCS/NY6 games. It’s impossible.

It’s pretty simple. People will tolerate dickheads if they deliver. BK doesn’t deliver.

And what always made it feel worse was the fact that he didn't seem to care that we lost all of the big time games. He never seemed to coach with the idea that we could actually beat Alabama in the NCG in mind for example. Was it a long shot? Of course, but we no showed entirely. And Kelly seemed entirely unbothered by it. He even made the joke about only being able to win if Bama didn't come out of the locker room.

I'm not saying he didn't want to win, I'm sure he did but that almost seemed like a cherry on top type thing for him. When you watch truly high level coaches like Saban, there is an obsessiveness around preparation and an extreme focus on attention to detail. You can find videos of Saban screaming at guys about getting into the right defense late in the 4th quarters of huge blowouts. I never got that vibe from BK and it showed in the big games. Freeman is much more obsessive and competitive.

I just took this screenshot and gosh, this is so satisfying. I'll give him credit, he is owning his clown take for sure.

Yup... it takes a lot to admit youre wrong

But the dude is still a goofball who just says the majority opinion out loud.

That bit was gratifying, but he still reminds me of the "Apolitical" podcasters who just talk about the type of politics that get clicks

he doesnt know ball, he just has media training

fuck him

You are correct sir. People will put up with all kinds of egomaniacs as long as the team/company is winning or making money. When the dust settles people start asking questions about how could this have happened or how did this person get away with doing certain things. Happens all day every day. Win and make money and people look the their way. Even “Big Game” James won 4 NY6 bowl games: 2017, 2019, 2022, 2024. Sad the bar was so low at ND.

I can absolutely guarantee that if ND did a root cause analysis Kelly and staff would have been determined to have had a significant hand in the decisions leading up to the death.
Haven't read further...

I guess BK's son was/is on the LSU football team and another son that was/is on the support staff. Awkward.

That just made me think, wanna talk about the ultimate Notre Dame man? Montgomery Van Gorder stuck around to be the holder after his father was the bane of the fan bases existence and fired. Kid must’ve really loved his teammates to stick it out
