I want to thank BK for recruiting Freeman to South Bend as a DC instead of going to LSU.
I want to thank BK for taking the bag and going to LSU, but failing to bring Freeman with him.
Still waiting on a title, but last season was the best season I can remember because I was too young to really appreciate the '88 championship.
It really is crazy how much the butterfly effect in this case works out. Without keeping BVG far longer than we should have and his firing when it happened, we would not have gotten Elko. Without Elko taking the lateral job to Texas A&M when he did, we would not have gotten Lea to be promoted. Without Lea taking the job at Vandy when he did, we would not have gotten Freeman at DC and eventually HC. So really, we need to thank Brian Van Gorder for giving us MFMF as our head football coach.

I’m not disagreeing or being contrary, but he did bring in Daniels. It wasn’t like he was a hot commodity at the time.
Ahh....I did think Daniels was there when he arrived, so I'll give him a tad of credit. But for the most part, that (IMO) is the weakest part of BK's game. He never could get a QB going at ND to save his life.

This morning Brady Quinn mentioned that LSU was actually courting Riley before Kelly but Riley wanted USC. I guess we really owe Riley a "double" thank you.

LSU wasn’t far enough from Texas and Riley’s side piece.

Triggering? I stated a fact. He has the most wins and losses of any ND coach. The dude was average. It’s funny that people think he did something amazing at ND. He didn’t. Dan Devine did more and was demonized by the fan base.
Devine was demonized because he wasn’t Ara. Kelly was appreciated, if not ever loved, because he wasn’t Weis, Willingham, O’Leary*, or Davies.

I was happy for BK when he left, because very few ND fans seemed to appreciate him by the end of 2021. Of course, I saw it as a win for everybody when Freeman was promoted.

Holtz-level performance without a likable personality. What's odd is, in Devine's time, if you had a likable personality, you were generally seen as unfit for coaching.
When you have to follow Ara, and the love everyone had for him, it was always going to be impossible.

Throw in the fact that he came from the NFL, and I think a lot of people were, understandably, speculative.

Definitely agree. Just gotta up the price and keep him happy
Watch the recent Pete Bevacqua interview on the Dan Patrick show when he talks about Marcus Freeman and then again when he talks about maintaining Independence. Its about a 15 minute interview. Marcus isnt going anywhere over money. They will give him a blank check.

Since Leahy retired (end of the glory years), ND has had 12 coaches responsible for more than one game. I'd say five were good, including Ole Purpleface. Frankly, winning is harder in the modern era. Kelly/Freeman couldn't admit many of Holtz's best players, and ND doesn't dominate TV anymore. Arguably, when circumstances are taken into account, the best coaches have been 1) Parseghian, 2) Freeman, 3) Kelly.

My undergrad years at Notre Dame were Brennan's last year and Kuharich's first three.

END OF MESSAGE.
Either your undergrad years or my grandfather's (a year or two after you) were I think statistically the worst 4 years of ND football. What timing!

END OF MESSAGE.
I got to see Kim Helton go 1-9-1 my freshman year at Houston, but transferred to Michigan State in time to watch the Steel Curtain mastermind and the GOAT go 17-17-1.
