Heres my thing...

Everyone hypes JG to be this "star". I never understood it. He had some awesome games in the CFP, but what has warranted the hype? He's not super quick/twitchy. Not really a deep threat. Never got the hype.

Pauling is a better slot receiver IMO
Think you partially answered your own question SoIll. 2 big games in the cfp tend to warrant hype esp when his qb was known more as a runner. That, coupled with massive production in arguably one of the best leagues in hs fball.

Add in Carr's arm talent in Denbrock's offense known for featuring the slot had many thinking JG was poised for a big year.

I think if IE fans were polled prior to the season and asked if he'd be the leading receiver or have 2 catches, most would choose leading.

IMO, our offensive plan going into the season was 3 WRs, and have them do a lot of inline and outside blocking. You saw that vs Miami, and our WR blocking in the box was NOT good, especially Greathouse. Greathouse did a terrible job blocking vs Miami inside and even worse outside. I think greathouse's poor blocking was a bigger part (than has been discussed) of why our offense struggled in that game.

Denbrock clearly didn't like it, we immediately went to 2 TEs a lot vs A&M and Purdue. Our run game is much better.

His blocking vs Miami has cost him major PT

This is probably the biggest surprise. Denbrock has in the last 3 years prior featured slot fades heavily. We even had Leonard trying them at times. So the natural assumption would be Carr to Greathouse on those would follow, which maybe they will. Maybe he’s just better at straight vertical routes and was throwing INTs on slot fades? Could be a simple as that.

If the slot fade is a thing. We need to have Fields in slot too. The idea of slot is really loose these days. Can have formations with numerous guys filling a type of slot role

Not when you’re 6-1 and have to find throwing lanes
Not sure about Carr being 6’1”, but either way this is part of the answer for some QB’s. Anything over the middle in short to intermediate is harder to see when most of the guys directly in front of you are several inches taller. I’ll add that, if CJ is trying to stay mindful of protecting the football, throwing it down the field and outside to open areas is a very safe bet.

Greathouse is a good college football player and I'm glad he's on our team. But I agree he's not really some sort of star. Has been kind of up and down his whole career so far.

He flashed in 2023 b/c he was the most ready of the freshman WRs and we were desperate for bodies, then he got hurt, IIRC. Last year he had a few good games in the regular season but also disappeared for weeks at a time, until flashing big in the latter half of the playoffs. Unlike Fields, he's not unusually physically gifted, and our other two best WRs - Faison and Pauling - have kind of similar profiles. Is he meaningfully enough better than either of them that we should be feeding him?

He's getting on the field, and I'm sure he'll have his moments (especially if one of those other two gets hurt) but Greathouse not getting more targets is fairly low on my list of things to worry about right now.

Greathouse generally has great hands and runs good routes. He doesn't have blazing speed, but he knows how to get separation which a lot of our receivers lacked for a long time. I don't blame him for coming on late last year, Leonard wasn't exactly a pass first QB. I'm a little disappointed that he's not used more in this offense, but I'm not going to pout when we're putting up 40+ a game. He's still a good talent as we saw in the playoffs, and I can tell you that Texas was pissed when we landed him. They were still pissed seeing what he did late last season.

Of the podcasts I've listened to, each of them has made a somewhat casual remark that the Greathouse injury is odd. It seems like they are insinuating there is more going on here.

Is anyone else getting this read? It seems like he's either got a more serious injury or he might be trying to decide if he should sit after 4 games or keep playing? He hasn't been targeted as much as we expected at the start of the season. Feel free to tell me I'm reading into it too much.

A last minute hamstring injury prior to game 5 on a player who has been MIA this season is suspect regardless of what the talking heads think.

Highly doubt it's anything other than an injury he just had a great catch the game before maybe he hasn't been targetting as much but with Pauling and Fields gone after this year his targets are only gonna go up.

Freeman has had 3 pressers since the injury and not fielded one question on it:

I’m usually not the negative conspiracy one but it just doesn’t smell right to me. The status of Moore, Smith, Burnette, Flanagan all addressed in thet period. Hope I’m dead wrong.

I'm with you unfortunately. Feels too convenient, especially with Pauling getting the C with more targets at the position.

The problem is he lacks the burst of faison/pauling or power/size of fields and with the type of passer CJ is, who doesn’t want plays to take long to develop he is the odd man out simple as that.

This and even Gilbert I think is gonna end up better you've seen a few times this year where Gilbert had his man beat over the top I think he's gonna be a main guy next year.

There’s a bunch of talented young WRs who’ll be competing for time. And we assume Faison is back next year, yeah?

I’m sorry but if this is the route he’s choosing it’s not a loss.
I don't know if I would go so far as to say it wouldn't be a loss but I don't think he would find a much better situation for next year. Would basically be the unquestioned top 2 guy.
I also think that if he was planning on transferring, that news would already be out there.
Should he transfer, there will be a hefty list of suitable slot options that will want to play with Carr next season.

I don’t think Pauling has more burst or really any athletic ability than Greathouse. The only tangible performance trait he might have over him is a feel for sitting in the right zones. But I think basically any athletic trait you can measure Greathouse > Pauling. Clearly the staff likes Pauling’s effort/leadership.

Freeman did not bring up any of those 4, he was asked specifically about them. That could be a good sign, or it could strengthen your concern that the beat knows what is going on, and to not ask about it.

I think it's one of 2 situations. He has an injury (freeman didn't talk about smith much before purdue if I remember correctly), and freeman doesn't willingly just talk about them and everything is as normal, just bad timing. Or, greathouse has a little injury but is really figuring out if ND is going to be his destination the remainder of this year or does he want to have 2 years eligibility somewhere else.

The curveball is Greathouse is still listed on the depth chart. That is normal for injured players under freeman, but someone that is no longer with the team or thinking about leaving is typically not on the depth chart (see onye last year).

I think Pauling has a better first step/quick move to get initial separation but isn't a burner either. I like greathouse size, high point ability, and hands better. The biggest issue IMO that caused greathouse to lose major snaps is his blocking and lack of effort blocking vs Miami. It was obvious.

For those that don't think this would be a loss. It would be a big loss for this year as depth if anyone goes down. Fields and Faison played almost the entire game vs Boise. Yes, they are both better than greathouse, but if one of them went down, we'd be in some trouble if we play a good team.
