Coach Freeman calling more crowd presence for playoff game

Also there are some interesting insights on the Notre Dame band in this reddit thread and some changes to how they've operated (impacting stadium atmosphere) in recent years

Does the Notre Dame band need to become more menacing?

No way. I'm not going to call out our band. You have to understand first that the band has taken a severe backseat with the addition of the Jumbotron 7 years ago. It used to be the band was the first and foremost tool for crowd noise. Now we've upgraded the PA and we're constantly playing hype on the Jumbotron. Don't get me wrong, I think it's good for crowd noise, but no way would I call out our band as lacking given the fact they often get drowned out over the PA and they've already been forced into a diminished role. I honestly miss some of the normal band fare that used to be played frequently and now you never hear anymore, like the Imperial March on 3rd down.

The other thing is, and it's pointed out in that Reddit thread, some bands are just hated because of their attitude and performance. USC was one listed because they only know how to play one damn song and they play it when USC gets a first down, when they score, when they make a tackle, when their QB picks his nose, or when a defender scratches his ass. I get why they do it, but they're just a bunch of untalented pricks that are known as one trick ponies. We don't need to emulate that shit.

Only thing I agree with in that reddit thread is that the Celtic Chant needs to be rethought. It's very cool and classic, but I hate it when the band plays it in big moments because everyone stops yelling and concentrates on moving their arms correctly. It's the equivalent of the band saying "Big Third down here! Now everybody get on your feet and try to rub your head and pat your belly!" You couldn't make the crowd quieter if you tried.

Gotta think you can have the Celtic chant, and arm movements, and try to incorporate the crowd singing along to the music.

Fair point. Celtic Chant is iconic, but need to get the crowd to verbalize during it to make it more effective.

I only went to a state school.... Sorry what does this mean?

You should be able to pull up replays like we watch on TV/Internet.
Might give some the ability to bitch from the stands like we do at home over officiating alone

I've been watching Notre Dame football for 20+ years and have no idea what this "Celtic Chant" people speak of is.

Edit: I see now it's that thing the band plays a lot.

Apparently the CFP is going to control the music at the game? And the opposing team will get an entrance video? I thought this was supposed to be a home field advantage?

I definitely understand the nostalgia and historical role that marching bands have played in college football. If I could have my way, we wouldn't have music over the PA system and the band would generate it, however, society has changed. Football players and the crowd get way more amped up from Mo Bamba than they do the marching band playing the 1812 overture.

I'm going to be real honest with you guys.

Who the hell is Mo Bamba?

It’s a song from a football video game that is popular. It’s pretty unoriginal at this point, every stadium plays it.

For once my FCS experience may be helpful here. My understanding is the CFP is not NCAA ran but I bet they are basically taking the NCAA's home playoff rules verbatim.

Once you get to the playoffs, the NCAA starts to control advertisements, video board stuff, music during some TV timeouts, etc. The road team can play a entrance video. But beyond that, it's a home game and I'd much rather be hosting than traveling.

First time NDSU hosted a playoff game in D1, they took the rules extremely serious, it was basically treated like a neutral site game. Went on the road the following week and quickly figured our that is not the way it works. Loudest games I've been to have been playoff games.

Oh, that's another thing. The crowd will likely be much younger than normal. A lot of bulk season ticket holders (businesses) will not be there and Gung ho fans who usually just watch on TV will be there instead. Cold weather will keep a lot of older folks at home too, some might even have already went south.

The one thing that might flip the script I just laid out is this is the first ever home playoff game. Novelty of it might get an older crowd.

I think it's very funny that the song is now way more famous and impactful in sports than the actual player himself. I thought Bamba was going to be great, and now he's just the name in the college football third down song.

I always thought that playing the intro to Korn’s Shoots and Ladders while displaying the team marching out of the locker room and down the tunnel on the stadium video board would work well for the ND fans. It’s got the bagpipe intro and then a riff that I presume most could handle. This, in my opinion, is considerably better than that God awful song I heard at the game I went to last year.

Imagine a night game and ND cut the lights and right when the gold helmets appear from the tunnel, the drum and guitar portion kicks in. I don’t know, I think it could work.

For those unfamiliar, listen to the first 90 seconds or so LINK

It’s funny for me to see the whole stadium do the arm pump thing. A few guys from my dorm just started doing this their junior year accompanied with viking/pirate growls. By the end of the season, everyone around them started copying them. Now it’s part of the official cheer.
