The problem can be solved by simply removing the link between conference champions and 1st round byes. No problem with 5 conference champs getting automatic spots, the problem is the first round bye for the 4 highest ranked conference champs.

Instead the 12 team playoff should consist of the 5 conference champs + 7 at-large, seeded according to rankings with top 4 ranked teams getting 1st round byes, regardless if they are a conference champ or not. Problem solved.

I think when they guaranteed the byes for conference champs, they underestimated (or ignored) the enormous gap in quality between the top teams in the SEC/B1G and the top teams in the ACC/Big12/Etc.

To be fair, last year the final top five were the champions of each P5 conference (Michigan, Washington, Texas, Bama, FSU). That would've been more or less the case for most of the last decade when you consistently had Oklahoma and Clemson representing the Big 12 and ACC at the top of the charts, and in the four-game playoff.

But then this year Texas and Washington (or, in their place, Oregon) are in the SEC/B1G, the ACC's powers have faded and the Big 12 is just loaded with programs that are decent but have hardly ever competed at an elite level. Only one current Big 12 team ever made the four-team CFP: TCU in 2022.

So, yeah, it's kind of bullshit that those conferences are locked in to top four seeds while the loser of Oregon vs. Ohio State (probably the two best teams in the country based this year, based on resume) will be 5th, and us and Texas/Georgia loser and Tennessee and Penn State will be seeded behind teams that we would certainly be favored to beat. But, this can all change and probably will.

Excellent points.

With all this banter on the Championship games between the P5s - with the Irish basically getting a 'bye week' during 'Championship Weekend'... I wouldn't put it past the committee to put the Irish in the 8-10th position

Yea but the BIG and SEC control the sport and will not agree to that.

Why not? More often than not, the second-place team in the SEC or B1G would be in the top four, and thus get a bye. The current system hurts them more than it helps them, while propping up the ACC and Big 12.

They want no chance of not getting an auto-bid and bye and both are trying to get 4 each guaranteed.

Of the 20 true powerhouse programs in the sport, all but probably three (Notre Dame, Clemson, Florida State) are in either the SEC or the Big Ten. If they can't get teams into the top four, they've got bigger problems.

Thoughts?

I mean I want to believe Brad Crawford has some insight based on his position.

I could see it. Outside of NIU we’ve more than passed the eye test. I think *if* we lose tomorrow, for us to make it, it’s got to be a classic game where it’s down to the wire and SC just puts it all together. We lose by two scores I don’t think we get the benefit of the doubt.

If we lose we would drop to 10-11 Clemson is 12 and we have a comment opponent they lost we won.

At this point if we beat USC in regulation we should pass Penn State and the only team that wouldn't drop below us in the rankings with a loss in the conference championship game would be Oregon. So we would get a 5 seed if Oregon wins and a 6 seed if they loose

We are now -950 to make the playoff on FanDuel. I’m assuming that’s a direct reflection of what’s happening in this UGA game?

Crazy to think GTech will have (technically) beat three Top10 team if you include FSU at the start of the season. Beat Miami at 4 and Georgia at 7. Giants Killers… sort of.
