What advantage Sneed may have in athleticism over any of the LBs, they all appear to play the position better than Sneed. Quickness, lateral movement, etc. are all great attributes for a LB, but the ability to ready the play is still king. Sneed seems to struggle with that the most.

I can remember a few plays where he has known/recognized the play quickly and he really flashes in those cases. It just hasn't happened enough. Depth is important (as we are seeing on the DL), so I definitely wouldn't try running this guy off though.

I would add Sneed to the mix of guys who rush the passer, I guess in the Traore spot. See QB, Hit QB, he's fine. Reading and responding to RBs hitting gaps in the OL does not seem to be a strong spot.

I’m going to use Sneed as an example for a situation that happens every offseason that drives me nuts.
When he was being recruited, every ND board had dozens of posters saying, “got to sign him, he’ll start day 1.”

Every year, ND fans pick a recruit or two & say they will start day 1.
No they won’t.

Last season: “With our WR room, Cam Williams will start Day 1.”
No. He never was. He wasn’t even the most polished WR recruit in the class, Gilbert is.
Before that, Sneed starts day 1.
Prince Kollie starts day 1.
Jordan Johnson starts day 1.

I fought with more people than I can fathom about Sneed for over a year. They all swore that Sneed would step in day 1 and start because of his athleticism, and “he is already better than Bertrand, Kiser & Marist.”
No, no he is not. He wasn’t better then, & he is not better now, & he probably won’t ever be. Bertrand & Marist are playing in the NFL as rookies. Sneed played 12 snaps as a Junior on Saturday.

Also, side note.
Did anyone hear the story, that was verified to be true, that multiple sites reported that Sneed & Kiser raced & Kiser won.

If Sneed wasn’t (ridiculously) given a 5th Star by one site, no one would care about him.
Same with Prince Kollie (had a 5th Star by a site), Jordan Johnson (5th Star by a site).

And Tim O’Malley had the best stat for fans wanting Sneed to just line up & rush the passer…he has the WORST pass rush success rate of anybody on the front who rushes the passer (18%).

Sneed reminds me of Botelho in terms of character issues. Botelho got his character issues worked out and accepted his role.

I want to see Sneed succeed at ND and that's up to 1 person; himself.

Jordan almost transferred as a frosh and had disciplinary issues on the field at times.

Sneed by most accounts is simply upset with playing time.
Apples and oranges. But I know what you're trying to get at

Look Sneed was a raw elite athlete when he came into ND. At this point in his career he is still very raw at LB and doesn’t have the football IQ to play LB. But is is still an elite athlete who does have pass rushing skills. They moved Junior to Vyper, I think they need to move Sneed to Vyper. Obviously he is light in the pants and will need to learn technique to se the edge. But when it’s a pass rushing down or if there is a run play away from his side he will be able to chase them down on the back side. That is what he is good at and that’s where the coach staff needs to put him into a position for him to succeed. Hopefully over the bye week the coaching staff can figure out a plan for him to highlight his strengths.

Yep. He’s not as big as Traore but brings similar (if not better) speed, and assuming Traore’s done for the year, we could use that. More so than having Sneed play inside LB when he struggles to read the plays.

Guys. Sneed is NOT MOVING TO VIPER.

Junior is listed at 255 on the official roster. Sneed is 220 pounds soaking wet.

Sneed moving to Vyper would be completely asinine and utterly disastrous for the defense. We need to let this go.

Sneed isn't nearly big enough to play Vyper on a down to down basis and he doesn't have the frame to add size. He'd give up 80+ lbs to most tackles. It's not even a debate.

They already put him there on obvious passing downs, which makes sense and central to your point about athleticism. Worth noting that O'Malley had researched his win rate on pass rushes compared to Botelho, Traore and KVA and he was by far the lowest.... hoping he can turn that around and contribute as the staff is clearly favoring the other young backers.

All fair points. Then I think Sneed would have to be a one trick pony…he specializes in being an edge rusher in passing downs. And if he doesn’t like it and transfers then I guess so be it.

This is more than fine, and the staff has utilized him in this role so far this season. But having him play full-time at the position, where he'd need to set the edge on rushing downs, is a recipe for complete and utter disaster.

I can't emphasize enough how bad of an idea this would be. It's something Charlie Weis would cook up.

I don’t think Sneed’s weight is that far off what it would need to be to play Vyper. It just all depends on how he plays at that weight. Vic Beasley was a star at Clemson playing at 235 on the edge.

Gotta find some way to shake the tits on a bore feel that he has going now. It is his best shot at any football future

Sometimes, guys just can't play at this level. Ask Malik Zaire.

It's not the staff's job to put a square peg into a round hole because we love Sneed's athleticism. If he can't see the field at LB, the solution is not putting him in another position where he's arguably a much worse fit.

If he wants to see the field, he needs to beat out KVA, Ausberry, etc.

1) Beasley, if he played at 235, would still have 15+ pounds on Sneed.

2) Beasley weighed in at 246 in the combine. That's still 20 pounds heavier than Sneed's playing weight according to the roster (and even that might be exaggerated).

You simply cannot have a 220 pound edge player in this defense. It just can't happen.

Sneed playing vyper will never happen he's 220 and 6 ft he doesn't have the length to play that position or the weight. Plus he gets home less than anyone who rushes the passer

Freeman isn’t very good at lying

So, you're saying the Freeman knew Sneed left the field?

Amongst the field with all the players that dressed, all the coaches and those in the operations, the cheerleaders, and the media.... he somehow noticed Jaylen Sneed was one of the 100, 150 or so that wasn't there?

I'm assuming the insinuation isn't that he knew at the time, but that it's unlikely he hasn't heard about the incident since.

Maybe he hasn't, who knows.

He’s hardly the first player to have left the field before the alma mater. I feel like I recall Jarrett Patterson - who was a captain at the time - doing so once a couple years ago (noticably enough that he addressed it later). That was after a loss though. Maybe the Marshall game?

i doubt its mandated players stand for it anyways. At Michigan even when they win generally just 1 captain will join in representing the team as a whole
