Excited to say I'm going to this game with family! First time back in 2 years. Family had multiple alum that started with my grandfather. He passed away about 7 years ago, so my father had been carrying the donation water to get tickets. He's had some health problems the last few years, so the family hasn't been going at all. Before that, we'd go about twice a year. But dads doing much better and well have a crew of around 8 heading to this game. Stoked!
Update here for anyone that care's to read. Dad ended up having some back issues in the last week and will have to miss the game. With that and all the hurricane stuff happening in Tampa (I live there), we're going to have to postpone our return to ND to next year. Sucks, but oh well. Pop's health is more important.

Stay safe! I have family in Tampa and they are on the way to Miami

Watched the Va Tech Stanford (recorded) some notes:
1) Game was closer than the score. First two drives SU methodically drove into red zone but came up empty, missed FG and QB fumbled on Va Tech 2 yd line. SU actually had more first downs and TOP thru first half.
2) Lamson played QB for SU as Daniels hurt. Expect Daniels Sat. Lamson makes Riley Leonard look like John Elway. Daniels is a little better but not a good passer either. Our game vs SU will have a large # of 5 yard passes by both teams.
3) SU has a pretty good run game featuring QB runs and a couple of good looking freshman RBs. The best one, Ford, had what looked like a pretty severe ankle injury on the next to last play of the game. Ford, a high school QB, had their only TD pass on a halfback pass.
4) their game plan will probably look like 2022 , hog the ball and shorten the game. VT only had four possessions in the first half but SU wilted in the 2nd half. It was over 100 degrees in Palo Alto!
5) SU defense is very conservative. Then hardly ever blitz and the DBs do not play press coverage, at least the didn't vs VT. They have to change that vs us but it doesn't suit their personnel so not sure what they'll do. Safeties are always two deep and they allow passes in front of them probably because they are not fast enough to play up more, corners allow short stuff as well. Since that's all Riley throws it behooves them to adjust.
6) Didn't see David Bailey the stud DE from Mater Dei at all. DE #11 Tufuti made some plays behind the LOS. Our OL should win the battle here. ILB's are big fifth year guys, solid but not really playmakers.

If I was some kind of betting guru guy I's say take the points (24)and the under. Its like a Navy game; offense will have limited opportunities so better make them count.

I watched the condensed game and agree that SU was their own worst enemy as the score looked worse than the actual contest.

I do think Stanford will bring the blitz b/c that’s what everyone does when your offense isn’t a true passing threat. RL & Co should embrace this as an opportunity to improve their passing game.

ND has to avoid 3rd & longs which has often been the case in previous games. If they do find themselves in 3rd & long, that’s where Bailey can make an impact. He’s not good against the run but is great at rushing the passer. I think he’s been dinged up, too.

Their starting center was in a walking boot at the end of the game so not sure of his availability. If he can’t go, their OL will have experienced about as many shake ups as ND’s OL.

Their QB should not hurt ND w/ the pass. He’s a good runner but coughed one up near the goal line in the 1H. If Daniels can go, he’s likely to do some damage through the air w/ their top 2 WR…especially their #1 guy who we all know about.

This is one of the worst remaining opponents on ND’s schedule so one would think we have a comfortable win. As Tim O’Malley said on yesterday’s pod “if this game is tight in the 4th quarter then it was a failure”

I'm real curious to see Leonard and his passing now that Denbrock had some time to spend with him.

I'm worried this will turn into another, "let's run the ball because we can and not throw it because we don't have to" game. At what point do you have to prove to other teams down the road that you can pass, that it is a threat and something you have to game plan for?

I can also understand that if we try (similar to NIU), we'll be in a slugfest in the 4th b/c this ND offense simply can't and won't do it this year. But, if that's the case, this isn't a playoff team and we'll lose 2 more games.
