I don't really know where UNC goes, but Mack Brown is in his 70s and had been retired for years before going back to Chapel Hill. I also think that the ACC situation being in flux makes this hire very important.

His OC, Chip Lindsey, would likely be named in the interim. He's got some coaching experience from his days with Troy, but it's not like he lit up the SBC when he was there.

Jamey Chadwell would be the guy I'd call. He's got ties to the Carolinas, albeit his two previous gigs were both in South Carolina (Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina). Feels like SCAR would give him a call if Beamer Jr won't survive the season. But, he's 3-1 so far and his team nearly defeated LSU.

I thought I heard there's some baggage w/r/t Chadwell, but UNC is definitely a program that wants to go the offensive route.

Linked article said Freddie Kitchens was agreed upon by the team as the interim if that role was needed.

I like Chadwell. I think his time has got to be coming soon. He's got a nice contract with Liberty, though, but a P4 school with ambition would certainly be able to make a move worth his while. I would love to see his offense in the ACC or SEC.

North Carolina seems like a great landing spot for him since he knows the lay of the land.

That JMU v UNC game was utterly shocking. I thought my scores app glitched when I saw the halftime score.

Hearing Texas fans tell it, Mack was out of touch and the game had passed him by before he left Austin. I was a bit surprised he decided to go back to North Carolina. While they've put together some decent offenses, it's basically been the same middling team it was under Fedora and Butch Davis (Save for Fedora's awful final 2 seasons). Mack isn't going to get this team over the hump.

They have the exact same problems in Chapel Hill that Texas fans were complaining about in Austin. No accountability and the defense is just not putting in effort. The ironic thing is that multiple UNC guys on reddit were saying the defense at least looked improved before last game lol

UNC is really a sleeping giant that just havent been able to get it right. If them and VT could go ~9-3 or better year in and year out, the ACC as a whole would be looked at much differently.

UNC is a basketball blue blood. It's a weird football job where you can envision them being pretty good but it ultimately never really happens for extended periods.

Mack Brown has more wins at that program than anyone else by a long shot. There is a reason he got asked back.

Yeah. I know they're a "basketball school" but plenty of places manage to be good at both. It's really striking that UNC never quite has, considering their advantages. And yes if UNC and really either Virginia school were consistently good, the ACC would have a lot more juice.

He also has the most losses at 73, The next closest is Bill Dooley with 53. Mack is 11th in NC winning percentage among 30 coaches, and there's 5 of those that had at least 5 good seasons or more. At best he's been slightly above mediocre, especially in his 2nd stint. His first time there he took an average program and posted two 1-10 seasons before he righted the ship and ended with 2 good seasons. He had one magical season with Vince Young at Texas, and the rest is kind of forgettable. Since he's been back he's lost every bowl game except his first.

It's definitely a basketball school like you said, but I think they would have been better off looking elsewhere for a football coach.

I just don't think that UNC cares enough about football for it to be labeled sleeping giant. This isn't a situation like ND where the administration just needs to flip back to supporting football instead of suppressing, UNC just doesn't care enough.

This. They're happy to have team that wins 8-9 games a year.

I don't disagree, but if you look at it from their perspective it's sort of easy to understand why they brought him back.

Put him in the context of UNC Football alone. He had a ten year stint there and now he's been back for a second trip for six. They went to six consecutive bowl games from 1992-97 when he was there. Hadn't been done prior, hasn't been done since. It's a basketball school. He was successful in the 90s and they had a chance to bring them back so they did.

KSU had Bill Snyder back. Not a heavy football tradition there either. Might not be a basketball school, but that's how these places can tend to operate.

UNC is certainly not Clemson or Florida State. It really isn't even Virginia Tech under Beamer. They're one of the most decorated hoops programs you'll ever find. The football bar is low.

At this point...I'd feel dirty, but if it meant a title....fuck it....let's start riding dirty.
I am 💯 with you... It has been 36 years fellas... Love him/Hate him, but Urban Meyer would take us to that next level, instantly. With Meyer, the majority of those kids that we listed who almost ended up at Notre Dame would indeed, be at Notre Dame.

A lot of top talent from the state too. North Carolina is no Texas but does consistently put out 8-12 top 300ish players with a handful of elite guys. UNC landed a few of those guys in recent years too. Those '21 and '22 UNC classes were really impressive and should have fielded a much, much, better defense. Teams like Georgia, Clemson, and Tennessee(again) should feast in that state. I want ND to do more in North Carolina. Guys like Young, Gilbert, and Blair are a good start.

I can say say pretty confidently that Urban Meyer will never, ever, ever coach at ND.

There's a non-zero chance of it happening, but that's probably a lot closer to zero than one. The Jacksonville stint was that bad. He's radioactive.

Tough to see where he goes from here. He's 39 years old and has already bounced around a lot. Probably going to have to settle in as a QB coach and work his way back to OC.

Another Texas Tech guy.
