This… All of this! What’s frustrating is we hired a supposedly top and experienced OC but still looked like the ‘23 mess of an offense. Yet we have 3 solid drop back passers in the stable. RL is a nice guy and good leader that we paid for, but nothing is guaranteed to anyone. It should be which QB can best help us win games. Especially frustrating because Detrick is familiar with these ND QB failings and has lived them here before. SMH. And yes, never discount the QB effect on a team including the Defense. This would be such a different team with a good drop back passer. RL feelings may be hurt but make the adjustment - That’s what a good HC and staff have always done successfully if they want to win! Go Irish! 🍀🍀🍀

Let’s also not forget the extreme damage this continued lack of a passing game is doing to our WR recruiting - Would any HS or TP receiver want to come join this mess?

It’s not going to get any better. He isn’t good enough and he doesn’t have the right mindset to be a head coach. The long ND keeps him the more the program will suffer.

His press conference showed us this. And it’s clear he isn’t learning on the job because after Marshall happened this wouldn’t happen again.
This right here. He's in over his head and the evidence speaks for itself. 3-5 against opponents that finished the season ranked and 4th loss to an unranked opponent. Two of them being mac teams. Good enough sample size for me.

He is cowardly...he doesn't want to be the one to rock the boat or make someone upset. He refuses to make a decision, no less the tough decision. He wants to be their friend not their coach. He is not a leader nor is he a head coach.

He's not cowardly. He's just way in over his head.

I actually thought he too getting his cheeks clapped by NIU rather bravely.

Him saying 'we've been here before' after this loss is like saying that after your wife catches you cheating again.

That's kind of the prroblem.
truly amazing that this quote actually came out of his mouth. Incredible

Completely missed this. Maybe use the TO a run a hail mary. Good chance for a pass interference call and have a better shot at 3.

Came up in one of the other threads yesterday, but a couple of people who were in the stadium said we didn't actually have a timeout - we'd burned it when NIU had the ball after that first down review situation - but NBC didn't realize that. I dunno.

But yeah if you have a TO there, you could probably fire a quick pass and try for 10 more yards or so. Or try for a Hail Mary. Or at least take our time on the kick. Regardless of the decision, not having a TO might explain what appeared to be very rushed/questionable end-of-game decision making if like most of us you thought we DID have one.

Thoughts after watching the post game presser:

- I'm tired of hearing about coaches and players' poor preparation. This is year 3 for MF and your teams shouldn't be using preparation as an excuse for a loss. There is more to it if you can't prepare better with two of the best coordinators in the country on your staff.

- MF admits wanting to take a shot when RL threw his second interception. Why not take a shot earlier in the game off of play action or when the game isn't on the line and you need to score some points? What kind of answer is "Yes we wanted our noodle armed QB who hasn't thrown a decent deep ball all season to take a shot"?

- NIU has a unique offense? I didn't see anything that amazed me besides execution and players that wanted it more.

MF keeps stating that we have to own this and not point a finger at coaches or players and that the leadership will show. It's time to point fingers and figure out where changes need to be made. Time to grow a pair and call out those that underperformed both the coaches and players. That is how you fix it.

- I hate hearing him say we got to go back and evaluate everything. Every time we lose he uses the same excuse. We have to go back and evaluate everything. I would rather a leader state where the shortfalls are and make changes. If 3 and outs are the problem then its time to call on the offense and make some changes, whether its in rotations and/or who is playing the position, make some changes because what you are doing isn't working.

Sad to sit through that post game presser and hear nothing. I am tired of hearing political excuses and just want honesty. At times I feel MF too often is protecting coaches/players instead of holding them accountable.
A repetiive word salad at his presser. A whole lot of coach speak with no meat on the bone. I know we don’t want to see coaches throw their assistants and players under the bus a la Kelly but something more than his pathetic sad dialogue. Can’t imagine a Saban or Holtz wallowing in self pity like that. He should have thrown himself harder on his sword and talked about falling short in his duties and owning one of the most embarrassing losses in ND memory. We better see some real change in player choices, playcalling and intensity. TBH for some reason I didn’t watch the game and thought I would replay it. I won’t be watching it. I’ve read posts and some lowlights. I know if I was there I would have been one of the booers calling to bench Leonard. Think I would have screaming at Denbrock. He made me miss Parker and he sucked!

Oh man.. that press conference was brutal.

He essentially admitted that the media hype got to their heads & resulted in lack of focus..

I’ll never understand this.. you wait almost 9 months to play meaningful football of which you only get 12 games & possibly post season to do so.

How do you as a coach act like keeping charge of your teams mindset is a new lesson you need to learn??

He then admits there was no consideration of putting Steve in during the 4th quarter..

Which means they are purposefully ignoring Leonard’s weaknesses & spreading the blame around..

Goes on to say Purdue will stack the box & force the passing game..

I just can’t.. I don’t want to get frustrated with him.. I like him.. But man does he sound lost..

My only hope is that my pendulum is swinging too far to the “bench Riley” side & I’m over reacting & they come out & stomp Purdue..

But after watching him & now knowing at Duke he had a 22% completion rate for 10+ yard throws, I just see another debacle unfolding in West Lafayette.

Fuck.

If I wasn't sure if MFs days were numbered... I sure am now after that presser. That was awful. He looked and sounded scared.

He just completely hitched his wagon to Riley all of a sudden becoming a B+ QB.

Good luck man... win out and a playoff win or you're likely gone.

I trust in Denbrock. He got it done at Cincinnati and LSU. It's a new system, give it time.

Bill Walsh couldn’t make this offense go with RL throwing the passes. Walsh was smart enough to know that and find a good qb.

Walsh used the west coast offense. You know, quick passes and never going deep. Y'all would even complain about him.

I did not know he had a 22% completion rate. I am also a fan of ND and should not know that. The coaches should know that before cutting a 7 figure check.

I hope the AD is looking at options because this could go sideways really quick. Notre Dame's line isn't good enough to deal with 8-9 guys in the box all year.
