On one hand, he just had to deal with the NIL-fueled Dante Moore circus. So, I get it.
On the other, does he not think there will be NIL-fueled circuses (circi?) with QBs at Ohio State?
He won't be the HC dealing with those circuses...

When Josh McDaniels left the Colts?
McDaniels at least had HC-in-waiting in New England in his contract when he backed out of the Colts job and had a very large buyout if the Pats ever reneged on that. It obviously never came to that when he left for Vegas. Then Kraft gave Mayo that same HC-in-waiting contract language a year later.

With the season that he had along with Greathouse it surprised me that he entered the portal.

Makes you wonder if Rico knew that if Kelly wasn't going to be at UCLA would he have transferred?

Coaches have the ability to be on the move as much as players do.

He left because we fired Stuckey, didn’t he? Maybe distance/culture were factors too, but the main reason Rico left was that Stuckey left. Is how it seemed anyway.

Maybe he would’ve gone somewhere else if he knew Kelly - and perhaps his new WR coach - wasn’t going to be at UCLA (and maybe he now will). But he wouldn’t be at ND regardless. And no we probably shouldn’t bring him back at this point.

I originally thought that as well. Then he gave an interview to a local news anchor that kind of danced around the issue, but certainly gave the impression that NIL was certainly a factor.

When it was all going down there was a weird ass “read between the lines” going on made it almost sound like stucky and some receivers (flores) were chill out smoke pot buddies and that whole situation got busted and broken up.

That was my first thought

Incredibly short sighted if NIL was a factor when you consider the value of a degree from ND.

I just find it odd Chip is tired of the state of college football then leaves for Ohio State who has proved in the last few months they are doing all they can to NIL at an elite level.

I suspect he’s made it clear to Day & staff that he is there to coach ball and wants no part of NIL & minimal recruiting.

My opinion this has a lot to do with their history.

Day played for Chip at New Hampshire. Immediately after, Day coached TE’s under Chip at NH. Then Day eventually followed Chip to Philly and San Fran as QB’s coach.

It’s all about trust. Day’s convinced he can trust Chip to call plays. Chip trusts Day will let him not give a hoot about anything else, lol.

I'm guessing there was some truth to the rumors that Kelly was at one point getting fired toward the end of the season. Somehow he got a stay of execution, but he probably didn't like his chances next season so he bolts into a favorable landing spot in OSU. They'll likely be back on top of the B1G with the exit of Harbaugh, so Kelly can parlay that into a good job later.

Agreed. O'Brien was probably about availability once Belichick didn't get an NFL coaching job. Hafley going to Green Bay set this set of ripples completely in motion.

Ohio State was 47th in Total Offense last year. UCLA was 32nd. Chip Kelly is a weird guy and those who want to meh the hire can do so, but his Oregon and UCLA teams ran the ball pretty well. It would seem that this is what Day was looking for first with O'Brien and now with Kelly. I think if I had to choose between the two, I'd go with Kelly.

Rico is going to have opportunities at UCLA with Foster. I think it will work out for him.

Speaking of Chansi - has he landed anywhere?
No first hand knowledge, but with how quiet he has been and not going somewhere I assume ND is paying out maybe next year and there's stipulation to who/where he can work with. not uncommon since he's probably not worth another place buying out

Would he have had a multi-year contract?
I also wonder if the rumors of some sort of off-field situation are true and that’s a factor.

Could have singed extension before season, no clue though. Definitely odd he’s not employed elsewhere
According to this, he did have one year remaining on his contract.

So, yeah, maybe he's still getting paid by Notre Dame and it's not financially worth it to him to take another job. OTOH, he's only been a P5 coach for like three seasons, pretty young/inexperienced to be taking a year off.

surprised no one has said the most obvious reason he might not have a job: there’s a decent chance he’s not a good coach. Del set him up with a bit of a raw deal but ND receiver performance the last two seasons is not going to show well in interviews.

Noticed this line in a Pete Sampson Athletic story on our WR corps...

"When Flores bolted after the season, he told the coaching staff that he wanted to win the Biletnikoff Award and saw no shot of that in Notre Dame’s offense."

Go shoot your shot Rico. But at UCLA? I will be curious to see how he and our other departed WR transfers fare out there in the world this season.

Putting it my calander to ask Rico about that award 3 years from now…
