The OL really just isn't the "weak link" you're claiming it to be, talent-wise. You're entirely overlooking how well we've recruited the position, and the issues you're identifying related to lack of experience, not talent, and is the result almost entirely of the fact that ND had two bookends manning the tackle positions for the last several years that limited other's opportunity to play. You're completely discounting that fact.

I'd rather have an unproven player than a backup lineman who has started 25 games and is a senior like Josh Lugg or Kristofic.

I thought Kristofic has looked good at times?
It's generally not suggested to start underclassmen OL over upperclassmen, it's not like skill positions where speed can makeup a lack of skill in other areas like route running, etc. OL tend to take time to develop and grow into their position. There's a reason only a handful of freshmen have started there in the last few decades. They were often phenoms in their own right, but more accurately they had to fill a hole on the line due to poor past recruiting and development (See Alt, Fish, Sam Young).
If the unproven player turns out to be better than the upperclassman with experience, sure, go ahead and put them in. More often than not you're going to end up putting the guy in that has been developing 3-4 years in the system...unless they end up being really bad.

'23 wasn't a bad class, that was Heistand's only class after returning. '22 wasn't terrible either imo, although we lost at least one to transfer. The '24 class is kind of weak by comparison once you get past Lambert.

Rivals had the 2024 as the #5 overall class: Rivals.com: Rivals Football & Basketball Recruiting - Breaking down the five best 2024 offensive line classes

In 2023, we signed 4 four-star OLs, including Top 250 guys Jagusah and Terek.

In 2022, Tanona, Wagner, Chan, and Schrauth were all four stars, and Wagner and Schrauth were top 150 players.

In 2021, the best player turned out to be a three-star project who was taken 5th overall in this last year's draft.

Only silver lining is this happened the first week of camp, not game week or the first half of TA&M.

They have time to figure it out or come up with a workable solution for the entire offense. This is why these coaches get paid millions, figure it out.
