Christianity has for thousands of years and always will continue to come into play in a conflict in that region in that many Chrisitan holy sites are in that area. During the British mandate Christian Palestinians were 9.5% of the total population. According to Wikipedia there were 500,000 Palestinian Christians globally as of 2000.
“The mayors of
Ramallah,
Birzeit,
Bethlehem,
Zababdeh,
Jifna,
Ein 'Arik,
Aboud,
Taybeh,
Beit Jala and
Beit Sahour are Christians. The Governor of
Tubas, Marwan Tubassi, is a Christian. The former Palestinian representative to the United States,
Afif Saffieh, is a Christian, as is the ambassador of the Palestinian Authority in France, Hind Khoury.”
Israel is democratic to a point. The US supports all kinds of shitty monarchs, dictators and terrorist producing countries.
That being the case I think that demonstrates democracy has little if anything to do with this. I think the reality is Britain saw Israel as an opportunity to jettison its some of its Jewish population post WW2. While both the US and British saw Israel as leverage/an attack dog against Arab nationalism which would help the US and Britain maintain its grip on oil revenues within the region.
I will say I find it strange that any “freedom loving” American would support a Theocratic, Apartheid State.
