I like Tommy Rees but there is no way Tommy Rees is a top candidate for this job, not when compared with the others. This is Saban/the program doing him a solid and getting his name out there as a finalist to help him find the best possible landing spot elsewhere.
He’s only being mentioned to invoke stability in the interim and keep recruits from fleeing.

No way is he a viable candidate (although I really, really, really, really wish he was).

Sorry, but Norvell is all smoke and mirrors.

He's not a good recruiter. His classes at FSU have been ranked 27th, 20th, 26th, and 12th. That should NEVER happen at FSU. He was also unable to hang onto Travis Hunter and lost him to freakin' Jackson State. He lost both five stars he had committed this past year on signing day -- coming off a 13-0 season. He's reportedly not all that great in-house trying to close.

At Memphis, he inherited a program that was very strong coming off Justin Fuente's tenure. He didn't build anything at Memphis, he maintained their success.

FSU got very, very lucky in the Transfer Portal this past year, and they deserve all the credit in the world for 13-0. But we saw how his team matches up against elite competition in UGA (hint: not well). The LSU win this year was nice, but BK stinks in big games, and 6 of his other wins came against teams with losing records.

He's 1-4 in bowls. He routinely loses to teams that have equal talent to his squads. He's a very good offensive mind, but his teams lack toughness and he's not very good at developing OL and DL. He would be a disastrous hire and I don't believe he'd do better than 7-5, 8-4 type seasons in Tuscaloosa.

Bama should hire Deboer.
You can poke holes in almost any coach. But there aren't many who've gone 23-4 over the last two seasons.

IDK that much about the ins and outs of Norvell and I haven't watched FSU closely enough to know about their toughness, but I do know he inherited a total mess there and turned it around pretty quick. Given his prior jobs, he seems like he'd be comfortable in the SEC (an open question with DeBoer), and given the current situation at FSU he'd probably be willing to make the move (also an open question with DeBoer). He's even beaten LSU twice in a row, which should count for something, probably a lot more than the bowl game his backups played against UGA.

Not saying Norvell's the end-all, be-all, but he's totally a credible candidate for the job.

Agree with all of this. He’s had tremendous success at Memphis, too. Stylistically and functionally, he isn’t Saban. News flash, no candidate is. Saban is wired like none other. He commanded the utmost respect, attention to detail, and effort from all. He is the ultimate leader, and no one will come close to that. Any candidate will be a downgrade.

That said, once Alabama fans stomach that, they should be able to entertain the thought of Norvell. He’s a solid coach and recruiter. At minimum, he’d be a perfect bridge coach that would invoke stability in the program.

And Belichick had him reduced to tears, slumped down against a wall. Not from chewing him out or threatening his job but simply from the tasks he gave him that week. So how badass is Belichick compared to Saban?

As great of a coach as Saban is, once he could no longer amass more 5 stars than entire conferences possess and then bludgeon teams to death, he got out. Just like he got out of the NFL.

FSU was fined $5,000 plus one percent of its football budget and placed on two years probation with a reduction of five scholarships over the period.
Could make it interesting for Norvell if Bama comes calling.

He wasn't implicated, but missing out on the CFP because of a QB injury then losing 5 scholarships over 2 years.

I really don't understand this at all. NIL is about paying kids money outside the university. How is Nick Saban even relevant to the equation?
Would you pay money to an unknown outcome.

They felt it was a better ROI with him at the wheel.

Kiffin must have really pissed off the powers that be, because it doesn't seem like they are considering him.
Read some article (can't remember where) that Kiffin supposedly burned a lot of bridges when he left Bama
Kiffin is way to flaky personality wise and spends too much time on social media for Bama to consider him.

Rees getting the job would be hilarious

Tommy is in a great position TBH. If there hire someone else and don't want to keep Tommy, he'll get a great buyout and sign with someone ese.

I hope for Tommy’s sake, he doesn’t get it. Tommy needs to move on to the NFL. Mike Locksley is a better candidate than TR. Of the current list, I’d prefer him or DeBoer or TR or Norvell. DeBoer can bring Ryan Grubbs with him too.

Man what a list.

Sark is out (I guess?)

TODAY is a great day to be a Longhorn. Tomorrow... 🤷‍♂️

But seriously I would bet that guys who worked directly for Saban but also have one of the small handful of comparably elite jobs are probably smart enough not to take this one. The shoes are huge.

Saban was interviewing assistant coaching candidates the day he retired.

Also, the first coach to ask Ryan Leaf to speak to his team after Leaf got out of prison? Nick Saban. Leaf credits Saban with being one of the people who absolutely helped get his life going in the right direction again.

Locksley would be a damn good choice. Much better than Norvell.

Would be a lateral move. Texas has more money and resources than any, both are in the same conference, Texas has more players to recruit from, and Alabama fans have the highest (borderline unreasonable) of expectations. No reason for Sark to leave Austin to willfully hop into that environment.

No disagreement from me, but just nice to see Bama fans be humbled for once. They still are trying to figure out why Demeco Ryans isn't being targeted for the job

Yeah you’d have to be clinically insane to leave a Texas program coming off a top 5 season to go try to follow Saban at Alabama. No upside, tons of downside.

IMO Norvell is the worst choice on the table of realistic names. He is a prototypical player’s coach, and that is a stark contrast to Saban’s approach to coaching and The Process he cultivated there.

It would create such a seismic shift in culture, I’m not sure it would ever sort itself out. It would be akin to Navy ditching the triple option and deciding to go Air Raid.

Don't think Alabama would take kindly to getting beat by 60 in a bowl game.

Here is the thing....Dabo talks on everything, whether it's politics, football or which flavor slushy at 7eleven is best. It's really strange he is so quiet right now.

So, Norvell's a players coach. Dabo's a has-been. Lane's too goofy. Lanning and Sark say no thanks. So we're already down to either DeBoer or... Tommy?

Per The Athletic.....
At Alabama, school officials have already selected three finalists to replace Saban: Washington’s Kalen DeBoer, Florida State’s Mike Norvell and, um, Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. A decision could come as soon as today.

All those big names using you for a money/recruitment boost and where did it bring you, Alabama?
