Call it Week Zero.

Call it The Early Portion of Week One.

Call it just Week One.

Call it Week 0.5.

Call it Christmas Comes Early.

Call it COLLEGE FOOTBALL IS BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK... in two weeks.

Not only is college football back, but our Irish play in the very first game of the season. In Dublin, Ireland. Against our favorite* friendly foes, the Navy Midshipmen. We get first dibs on celebrating, complaining, yelling, screaming, stressing, relaxing, and hot-taking our way through a game this season.

We have been blessed, and I can't wait... even if it means pissing and moaning about Navy chop blocks (maybe their offense changes so much with a new coach that we don't have to worry about those anymore?), or simply being bummed out that we have to play these plucky, scrappy, goshdarn national heroes every year when other teams get to open against FCS schools for appropriate warmups (we have to wait for week two for that, dammit!).

Without further ado, let's see what kind of thrilling, titillating slate the college football gods** have provided us for Week Zero!

* I know ND owes a great debt to Navy, a debt ND themselves will never consider fully repaid... but idk how much I'd complain if this game somehow went away. I'm conflicted.
** "Gods" here meaning "the ADs, Presidents and network execs that are trying to ruin the sport we all know and love"

- The Irish either score in three plays and Hartman makes it look easy on the way to a 14-0 championship season and the Heisman, or the Irish go three-and-out and find themselves in a dogfight that surely spells doom for the entirety of the 12-game slate... no in-betweens here (really, it will be interesting to see how the ND defense handles the new-look Navy offense, which we don't know much about, and how much, if at all, the Irish open up the playbook to get Hartman and the receivers settled in. We know Estime and the OL will dial in the run game at some point, but the passing game needs to be ready by week 4 and 5. I'm taking ND giving the points, and the over. Life's too short to bet the under when you're rooting for Sam Hartman.)

- C-USA gets conference play started EARLY! Rich Rod leads JSU into FBS/CUSA play, and they had a decent squad last year. UTEP is meh. I bet Rich Rod gets his boys on track early, and they're competitive in CUSA off the bat, starting conference play (and the season) 1-0.

- Football's on!

- This is a sneaky-good matchup between MAC and MWC powers. Shoutouts to Ohio for traveling to the West Coast to kick off the season. That's ballsy scheduling, and will prepare them for the later midweek MACtion grind, win or lose. Tune in and enjoy.

- I'll let one of my favorite CFB Twitter follows do this one (rooting for Clark Lea to back up his refreshed contract and continue to build Vandy into something respectable, which for a defensive coach means not covering in heartbreaking fashion, sometimes):

- Will returning Heisman Trophy QB Caleb Williams have to break a sweat in this one? Doubtful, but it would be fun. Too bad nobody has the Pac12 network to check and see! Maybe Reddit will have a link? Someone teach me how to find those, because I know they have to use secret language for game stream threads.

- Week Zero night cap! Kick back, enjoy a frosty beverage on the couch, and see if you've got the stamina to make it through the 4th quarter of a 9pm game. Stretch the late-night stamina muscles before the 10pm (and later) kickoffs start.

I like that we are the only meaningful program playing on a network that people actually watch. Should get more eyes. I’d wager most of the college football world will be tuning into NBC. If people don’t know who Sam Hartman is, they will soon.

That damn network hid the pirate from me for so many years. And now he is deceased. PAC 12 network makes my permanent hate list.

Best part of PAC 12 dying is no more games I can’t watch because of the damnable PAC 12 network
I kind of liked that nobody could watch USC and Oregon. I imagine they’ll get a lot more attention with their conference switch.

If ND only wins by 2 TDs that won't be a good start. Navy can be tough to run the score up on.

Always play us tough. They were bad last year at 4-8, but we still only won by 3. Meanwhile we blasted Clemson. While I respect them for what they are, I hate playing Navy. I hate watching them run the ball, I hate how close they make it, I hate that the game is shorter, I hate that historically it led to more injuries, I hate that they often show more grit, I hate that we are their Super Bowl yearly. I just hope for a win and no injuries.

I assume Newberry isn’t changing the offense at all??? If not I have to wonder why even go through the coaching change?

NM State. From your (ex) neck of the wood.

Had their season cancelled after a road game here vs Grand Canyon.
I tried to be an Aggie fan when I lived there but their football games were worse than some Indiana HS games. Basketball was always fun to go to, except this past season. Now I’m back in South Bend, thank God!!

FIU has Miami Vice uniforms and they're outstanding. Sadly, they're away at La Tech, which is still the night cap game I'm watching and not Spoiled Children.

I've got some Quicksilver board shorts from the 80's with a similar pink palm tree on black background print.

It'll be interesting to see if there's a strategy behind limiting Estime's carries easily in season against these teams ND should beat handily in an effort to let him carry the rock 20-25 against the better teams on the schedule.
Assuming Price is also on an early season pitch count.

Does the Payne/Ford combo get 10-15 touches each, mixing in Love?

I'm looking forward to seeing what SJSU QB Chevan Cordeiro can do against SC. Caleb is likely to cut through SJSU's defense like piss through snow since their defense totally busted at the end of last year and they've lost a few players, but Cordeiro has some talent and the skill guys aren't too bad. Hope he does enough for bettors to hit the over.

SJSU probably has the best RB in their conference as well.

I'm hoping Estime averages 12 carries/game the first 3 games.
