It’s quicker and easier to turn a basketball program around via the portal. For whatever reason, we’ve had no issue taking on transfers in basketball in the past—graduate or otherwise. I don’t know that next year will be the year we truly can compete, but in two years, the right coach with the right philosophy could have us competing again.

I feel confident that Zona and JR will return. We have Burton coming in next year, that’s it for that class right now. Starling and Lubin need to re-recruited to return most likely. Cormac has a year left in theory but seems like a long shot. Best-case we have 6 scholarship players penciled in before hitting the portal. Worst-case we have 3.

I suppose best, best case would be the new coach gets Dunlap and Friedrichsen to re-commit as well but that seems unlikely.

Friedrichsen is already signed with Wake Forest

Wow, do they need to fill a roster next year. Lubin, Starling need to come back for any chance, obviously.

Hard with the restrictions to getting players from a good school / grad transfer. But, right now the IVYs are going in the portal - sucks to have no one to contact these players - when ND will have 7? 9? open roster spots. Hopefully the coaching search has been moving/concluded behind the scenes.

A 30 second search of the portal right now ;
Paxson Wojcik 6'5" guard - Brown - 15pts 7 rbs 3 ast - played at Lu Lumiere
Josh Cohen 6'10" big - St Francis (PA) - 22pts 8 rb - 2 years
Chris Ledlum 6'6"forward - Harvard - 19pts 9 rb - Kentucky and 30 others already on and talking
Dame Adelekun - 6'8"big - Dartmouth - 14pts 7 rb 2 blk - Wisconsin and 20 others on and talking
Citadels leading scorer, Harvards #2 scorer as well - on and on.

Have to imagine that Paxson Wojcik is on ND's radar just given the proximity of his HS.

If there's one thing working in ND's favor, it's immediate playing time availability. That's not going to be hard to sell.

1) Starling
2)
3)
4) Lubin
5) Zona

That's our lineup lol. Then there's the academic angle that clearly worked well in getting Cormac Ryan and Josh Atkinson in the fold in prior years, specific to the names you mentioned above.

Will be interesting to see the new coach and what style of play he implements. Figure it's going to look a lot different from our 5-out offense this year with virtually no 3 point threat. Would be nice to see a lot more pick-and-roll with Lubin/Zona in the front court with the offense running through Starling.

I'd pencil Zona in as a stretch 4 after the 3 he hit last night :)

He hit a few of those down the stretch this season, I legit didn't even know he had that in his arsenal haha. Then the absolute brick on the front end of the free throw last night late in the game.

I've never understood guys who have better touch from behind the arc than the free throw line.

If there was ever a time for NIL to play a major factor, it's now. PAY JJ Starling and Lubin. PAY them big. Those two would provide a formidable guard-forward combo as sophomores. Through them, Campbell, and Zona, you can probably piece together a halfway decent team with the portal. If they depart, you are talking about a 4 year rebuild for the next coach.

If they settle for Chris Collins everyone should be pissed. Career record sub .500 and only good this year bc the team is loaded with upperclassmen. Would be an incredibly lazy hire.

I think you nailed it - a rebuild this ugly should happen after a great season though, just makes this season sting that much more.

The Brey rotation thing has been beaten to death several times over - but Brey and staff always fell short on development with the "5-10 min guys" as I'll refer to them, mainly because its defensive focused. Development of full time players was usually a positive.

An example from this team - Tony Sanders, 6'7", reasonably athletic, long wing - even if he can't execute any of your offense well; 3 years in and he can't come in to lengthen some tv timeouts, just to hound their wings and guards with tough pressure, 100% for a couple minutes, tell him it's his way to play every game. Someone I think does this well is Izzo - this year 3 guys all 26+ games all between 6-11min. and one with 14min.

Yeah the catch and shoot when he was on a dead run in transition blew my mind lol

I wonder how different this season could've been if the Ivy League granted Atkinson a fifth year waiver. Nate was so good offensively but he was never equipped to guard the opposing teams' five. Our post play on both ends was so abysmal, it would've changed the whole outlook of this squad. Woulda-coulda-shoudla.
That turned out to be the gaping hole. Why Brey didn’t push harder to fill that hole via the portal boggles the mind. Boeheim basically called it in their first matchup when he pointed out the obvious that ND had no presence underneath and it would be stupid not to take the ball to the hole every play.

Couldn't agree more. Even when the O was on, we couldn't generate enough stops with teams in the post which led to so many of the close losses.

The Rakes report did a cool write up of Brey's legacy back in January (I think) when Brey announced he'd be leaving, I believe I shared it; it was so much fun watching those 2015 and 2016 teams that had complete lineups. Zach August, Bonzie Colson, Jerian Grant, Demetrius Jackson, Steve Vasturia, Pat Connaughton, V.J. Beachem. Not a weakness in the lineup. August wasn't the guy on any given night but man did he do the gritty work, cleaning up boards and playing solid D, and he certainly wasn't incompetent offensively by any means.

Easily one of my favorite teams to watch in any sport of all time.

I remember being so excited for the class of 2018 and thinking we had stability lol, I appreciate each of those guys individually but it never panned out for them collectively. Nate, Goodwin, Hubb, etc., individually all had tremendous talent but they just never gelled.

OU was eliminated from the Big 12 Tournament last night by Oklahoma State. Their season is over.

If Porter Moser is really open for business, he's got nothing but time now.

With a $6 million buyout very unlikely unless he’s let go by OU

It's about the only teams I remember that played some decent D.

This is probably a top 5 team in the ACC with Atkinson

According to ESPN, these are the names that are linked at the moment.

Penn State: Micah Shrewsberry (heavily linked)
Colgate: Matt Langel (picking up steam)
Ohio State: Chris Holtmann (mentioned, but nothing current)
Drake: Darian DeVries (a likely option)
Creighton: Greg McDermott (nothing concrete)

Is Notre Dame a better job than Creighton?

Not sure how you all feel but Shrewsberry has really grown on me the last month or so the more I’ve watched them. How does everyone feel about him? I know when he was first mentioned at the beginning of all this there wasn’t many who would be on board (myself included) but I’ve really liked what I’ve seen since I’ve started watching their games.

Right. Unless he's got some kind of out clause.
Or if 1) He doesn't want to stay and
2) They don't want to keep him.
Both of these are at least somewhat possible. If so Okla would likely be happy to grab a million or two or easy cash (i.e. negotiate the buyout with us) and use it to get someone they think is better. They can't be too happy with what they've gotten so far.

Greg McDermott would be my #1 but then I’d probably gamble with 2A) Shrewsberry or 2B) DeVries.
