Freeman will hire a good recruiter. He's proven that. He's never hired an OC (most think Swarbrick told him to keep Tommy) so I don't see how you know he'll hit a home run here. Hope he does; its kind of a big deal.

A good recruiter and a good player caller are not the same. You hit the nail on the head here.

So many possibilities here.

Maybe he's taken a page out of Kelly's book in trying to secure a little more money for himself this season?

Maybe there is an internal thing where MF is fine with him leaving?

Maybe he is thinking that one good season at a powerhouse program will land him a solid HC gig in college or OC gig in the NFL?

Maybe he is using the media exposure (mostly about him being a hot up and coming coordinator), to get his name out there as the next big thing for next year?

Shit, these maybe's can go all day long.

Yep. Personally if/when Rees goes I think Freeman should hire a playcaller. He has good recruiters in himself and Stuckey and DMC. He doesn't have anyone - other than Parker I guess - who has ever designed or called an offense.

These particular circumstances weren't anticipated, but just to mention, when Carr signed on I recall there was mention of a specific discussion with him that not all coordinators (Rees) would necessarily be there for the duration of his career. The heavy implication was that Rees would be an OC in the NFL, but some form of this was previewed with Carr and he seemed to be fine with it. (Not posting this in Carr's thread as I'm sure no one wants to see it bumped just now.)

Just throwing it out there that Moorhead turned down Bama, but last time around he was very interested in the ND job, so he won't necessarily reject ND.

You're talking about the guy that's the current head coach at Akron? would he seriously leave a head coaching gig?

Maybe. He makes $500K as the head coach at Akron. He could quadruple his salary. He has always had an interest in ND. It's an interesting situation.

He already took a significant pay cut when going to Akron. I guess it depends what his goals are moving forward.

not saying that i want another HC or anything of that sort - just specifically looking at the why of a decision made by ND.

We hired MF in order to maintain consistency, which nearly unamiously reported that it was a dual partnership requirement of Tommy staying on as OC.

One year in and that is gone. Decisions for consistency typically dont lead to consistency.

We could easily triple his salary. Akron went 2-10 last year. I dunno. Maybe?

Moorhead, Mullen, Grubb and Lebby all turned them down.

TBF, I don't think it's simply a "lateral" move to go coach under arguably the GOAT, at least in modern CFB, not to mention the fact it would be roughly a $2-2.5M raise. The second point would be moot if ND really did intend on matching any offer, but I think the launching point alone coaching with Saban speaks for itself.
Agreed. Its only a "Lateral Move" in ND fans who are not being honest with themselves. Neither the program nor the HC has closed the gap with Bama and Saban. I would make the move if I were Tommy without question. He also needs to prove himself outside of ND and there is no better place to be an OC than at Bama. If he has half a melon between his ears he is gone.

It is a no-brainer move, Saban is the G.O.A.T.. I wish him well and I look forward to a new start.

If Tommy's aspiration is to coach in the NFL then Nick Saban is definitely not the GOAT. His 15-17 record with the Dolphins makes that clear. If Bill Belicheck wanted to hire Tommy as OC for the Patriots that would be a no-brainer.

He responds to it on social media

I’ve always viewed this as him having fun and poking fun at the fan base. I wouldn’t say he’s sensitive at all. Just a good sense of humor.

Quite possibly the worst response you could have written. The point isn’t that Saban was a great coach in the NFL. Have you seen Sabans coaching tree? If Tommy wants to be in the NFL Saban will have him there within 2 years. Also, you’re gonna be shocked to find out who Belicheck just hired to be his OC.

Tommy Rees has dealt with more crap from Notre Dame fans over the last 12 years than perhaps anyone ever, and seems like someone with a healthy dose of self-confidence. He has to have a good sense of humor by now, or else he'd be doing some different job, and I suspect having fun with it is exactly what he's doing on social media.

The Bama Tight Ends will be thrilled with this hire because Tommy doesn't know what a wide receiver is.
Because ND strutted out such receiving talent as Salerno et al. Come on man.

The way I look at it is that Tommy just wants out of ND for whatever reason. He will have the best offense he ever has had this upcoming year and the school would match any offer from Bama. If he accepts he just wants out.
My only issues with him have been his tendency to outthink himself with some of the play calls especially in the red zone. Seems like he tried to get too cute at times. Also, seemed a little sensitive to criticism. I mean who cares what message boards say. He will face it just as bad at Bama.
The problem with this and many other posts is that we believe that ND is still a destination place and still on the verge of a Natty. Time will tell with Freeman and if he can bring it back but I have resigned myself to watching ND football as a playoff occasional participant who gets mud hole stomped against teams like Georgia, Bama etc.

Tommy Rees objectively should take the Alabama OC job. Even if it’s a scenario where ND offers $3.5M and Bama offers $3M, you take that job. The mentorship of Nick Saban is invaluable. The job you get after that is unbelievable. His list of OC’s is wild. ND simply can’t match that in the slightest. He should absolutely take that job, objectively.
As much as everyone says this is a lateral move, it's far from it. He absolutely should take this job.
