So what happens when we bring in a grad transfer like Hudson Card and he wins the job, then Buchner decides to transfer. Our depth chart will be Card, Minchey, Angeli?

I mean, even assuming that happens, the alternative would be a QB room of Buchner, Minchey, Angeli... and in your hypothetical Buchner is worse than Card because he just lost a QB battle to Card.

I haven’t seen anyone say Angeli will be better. But the transfer almost definitely will be and Buchner already beat Pyne out once. He surely would again. Pyne isn’t getting any taller.

Also we all watched the games. Pyne is severely limited. Stats can be misleading, particular ones that say Pyne was good….
People posted in this very thread Angeli would pass him up next year.
Buchner looked worse.
And games trump practice.
Pyne probably had the upper hand moving forward against Buchner, especially with how fragile Buchner is.
I’m guessing this is about the QB transfer, whoever it is, not Buchner.

Agreed. But what about a pedestrian QB who was not supposed to be the starter when the season began?

Idk. Six figures even still I’d guess as an incumbent starter. I don’t really get the point GATTACA was making, but the implication was seemingly that a ND QB just default making money is eye roll assumption. Millions they aren’t making no, but even Pyne probably gets a decent bag by default as a starter entering the year if ND wanted that.

Again the relevance to today is lost on me though

After all the smack this board talked about Drew (who absolutely played his ass off for this team), now people are worried about the prospects of ND winning the bowl game without him. Unbelievable. Can't have your cake and eat it too.

Seriously, wishing him the best moving forward. Drew played his heart out for this team this year and literally saved the season from utter disaster. Some will only focus on his bad halves (Cal 1st half, Stanford, 2nd half Navy) and that's just how some people are: cynical.

I saw a leader and a guy who busted his ass for this team, loved this University, and saw the writing on the wall. Can't blame the guy.

Thanks for everything, Drew.
100% Don't think I've seen a guy blasted more for playing his heart out since Tommy himself. Guy wasn't expected to be starting, fans threw a lot of hate his way on social media, but he gave it his all.

I expect Drew is graduating in Spring, haven't read the rest of the thread. Growing up a Quinn fan I expected they'd have to kick him out of here first, but he did get to live the dream I guess. Maybe he just wanted a fresh start and expectations, or another program got in his ear.

So Pyne believed Buchner should not even be allowed to compete??? If true then this is an all time bonehead decision

Honestly, I've always felt Pyne had a Napoleon Complex (not just in height but in talent). He just came across to me as a guy who had an ugly chip on his shoulder. Being motivated by haters in fine and all, but it can become a toxic mindset if it goes down the wrong path.

I could see the "noise" getting to him regarding his limits and the handwriting on the wall being what is, he makes a poor decision thinking he is owed something and the grass is greener elsewhere. I don't see this ending well for him (unless he gets his degree), I think he was right where he needed to be and ND was his best case scenario even as a backup.

I like Drew a lot as a person.
With that said, probably never have been given a scholarship anyway.
Rp3 next please

I'd say this is an out of character, douchey, move from Drew. He must seem to think that he has to get in the portal now for him to have a chance at any reasonable spot. But, can't he enter the portal and still play in the bowl?

Just bizarre. Unless Buch really is that healthy and they told Drew he was going to be the starter and play the whole game. But, that would seem rather surprising.

That’s not necessary. The bowl doesn’t really matter. Kid played best he could, no reason to insult him. He won’t be starting here anymore, so he’s gotta look out for number one. Anyone is wrong to begrudge him for that.
Lol if you go back through I’ve been one of the few guys here supporting him the whole way. Just busting balls trying to have some fun my man.

The timing is certainly a surprise here, but the fact that we are losing a QB is no surprise nor is it unwanted. Buchner getting positive results from his recovery and likely playing in the bowl was probably some writing on the wall for DP that he was still #2 on the depth chart and when a transfer comes in he will be #3.

I can see why some people might have a negative response from this since DP has always been all in and has professed his love for ND. However, this is the best thing for him to do if he wants to continue to get playing time.

I do think they probably told him Buchner would split reps both in practice and in the game though.

Agreed. The fact that it came as a surprise to the coaching staff, and his iPhone notes app announcement, makes it seem like a rushed reaction to something he didn't like (Buchner, transfer, whatever). And probably, yes, motivated by the sense that he has to move now to get a spot somewhere else.
I just hope he doesn't come to regret it. Kid has no business being QB1 at Notre Dame, but he played his ass off for us.

Sounds just fine to me. And Carr in 24. I've never bought the idea that guys need 2-3 years to be ready to play in a system. True Freshman being ready are a rare bird. But why do guys have to wait until 3 years in to play? Maybe there is a model that works going this route, but ND certainly hasn't mastered it.

I say give them a year to get ready and then play them as redshirt Freshman or true Sophomores.

The fact that Thamel broke it first makes me wonder if Pyne had family members or a rep calling schools to gauge interest. Then he got outed and had to make a hasty decision.

I'm sure I am in the minority here, but I lost some respect for the kid here. Leaving before the bowl game, I don't like it but whatever I guess, but not telling the coaches and having them be completely off guard is a douche move. You battled and I appreciate you, but you weren't good enough to go ahead and pull this shit. IMO

Sounds like the staff is starting to have those super honest conversations we've been told about. Appreciate all Pyne has done and wish him well wherever he goes to backup QB1 next, but this is called thinning the herd and next year's QB room just got better by subtraction. Now we just need to sign that transfer QB and process RPIII out. Then we'll finally start to look like a QB room serious about competing.

That must be something new, since ND took mine.

They're bad about taking them for majors, minors, and some other programs of study. I also might have had a different experience because for some reason (the most mystifying honor I've ever gotten) I was in the glynn family honors program which basically adds a whole other core curriculum with no AP credits allowed. Maybe other paths to an ND degree allow for more AP's I just remember having almost none of mine apply

Yep, this is exactly my thoughts. I also think this makes ND a more appealing spot to land for a portal transfer as opposed to any "competition" drama with the previous starter who they are almost guaranteed to beat out. I'd rather Pyne clear out now than bring drama to the locker room in the Spring by departing.

Ooh. Honors program. Fancy. ;)

FWIW, it's been a bit but I AP'd out of freshman comp and most of my language requirement. Got to my major and minor courses a little faster that way.

While I appreciate the kids toughness and moxie, him and his family must be the only ones to not recognize his clear limitations as a QB at this level. I wish him best of luck wherever he ends up but this seems like a bit of a tantrum that we’re trying to upgrade the talent in the QB room.
