There’s absolutely no reason in looking forward what, 7 months till next season

Play to win.

You don't tank the game. But, you work in some of the younger guys more than they've been utilized in the regular season. Ideally you win, but if you lose they gained experience. And, ultimately if player X gained valuable experience in the Gator Bowl, even if it comes at the expense of losing, I can live with that if he learns from that situation and avoids the same mistake and contributes to a win next season.

They are glorified spring games. The best players don’t play. So the practice time and game both should be run with an eye to towards the future.

Pyne is going to play because there is no one else (if Angeli was at all an option he would’ve played by now) but I think we also will see a lot more Kollie, Sneed, Merriweather, etc.
Amen. This is basically what I was trying to say.

They are not. In our case, probably two guys don't play. Everyone else does. Yes they are an opportunity for 15 extra practices and you should get your up-and-comers some quality reps, but also they are a high-profile measuring stick against, in this case, probably an upper middle class SEC team. Also they influence the narrative for nine months when there's not much to talk about.
End of the day, winning your bowl game is vastly better than losing it. Play to win.

Saw him throw two beautiful touchdown passes at the end of the year. Unfortunately they were both to the opponent

For most of the season, Drew Pyne had *all day* in the pocket. From what it sounds like with Armstrong, a clean pocket would result in 2021 production. I'd feel pretty good about having Armstrong knowing two OTs are coming back to bookend the OL.

If Tommy wants to run the RPO offense that he set up for Buchner, you go with Card and let them battle it out. That may be what Angeli is suited best for as well. Probably the best compliment for a RB/TE-centered offense.

If you are looking to be more of a pro-style team that spreads the wealth more, you go in a different direction. I think of Minchey in this camp.

As I said above, I prefer the latter. But I think any of the three people are mentioning are upgrades and would be exciting.

I thought Golson (based on his epic film) and the Kizer (based on his first year) were going to be the guy, but Book turned out the best. Running QBs are so hard to defend. So what do I know!

What was the problem with Armstrong this year? He had a great 2021 and I was really hoping he'd hit the portal last year and come to ND.

The optimistic version is that his OC left and his OL was decimated. He is good in a spread offense, and they couldn’t protect him.

The pessimistic version is that he regressed.

Both very possible.

Why wouldn’t Cade stay put until the season was over to get to potentially play in a natty?

Remember for these guys they are looking for 1) PT 2) a school that is good at football with some modicum of offensive talent around them 3) an OC they think doesn't suck. Then the school that meets that criteria has to want one of them.

From what I'm hearing tons of guys are proactively reaching out to ND because of the elite OL and the fact that Drew Pyne put up numbers like he did while clearly being limited from a talent/capability standpoint. Card, Leary, and Armstrong (as well as some others I don't have names on) have all reached out to ND. ND is only going to take one guy tho. I would say that right now I think Card is the most likely one of the bunch to end up at ND because of his upside. I think Leary would've been top choice if not for injury.

I don't know how much NIL will or won't be a factor for some of these guys because very few in the portal are "proven" or would elicit some sort of bidding war.

Out of Card, Armstrong, and Leary, I would take Card.

With Card, you get a guy with multiple years of eligibility and basically zero injury history. The only downside is that Buchner probably transfers. But, at this point, I don’t really give a shit.

A one year rental isn’t going to do much for this team in 2023. No matter who the QB is next year, this is probably a 10-2 team next year.

I wanted Armstrong but I can’t ignore how he pissed his pants all season long.

He's injured right now and done for the year, and apparently he hates Harbaugh and doesn't give a shit about sticking around to get a ring when that could compromise his chances of finding a landing spot. Harbaugh actively lied to him about the QB competition for this year to get him to stick around.

It's ironic because had Cade never decommitted from ND his entire career trajectory is different. He is almost certainly the starter this year, and possibly the past two years, because the guy who ended up playing the most this year was the person taken the class behind him.

You could say the same for Brennan Armstrong. If he enters the portal last year and comes to ND then he's likely off to the NFL right now. Instead he spent a year getting beat up and regressing, and is "damaged goods." A lot of "what ifs."

Has anyone else watched this? I was excited to get hyped for Card, but I came away thoroughly unimpressed. We can't have Pyne start again in 2023, but I think the Card hype is based on his recruiting profile

It didn't impress me too much.

If Leary has good recovery prognosis I think he's gotta be the guy.

I would absolutely give a shit if Buchner transfers.

Card is no guarantee to be good, even better than Buchner. We’re also one injury away from a mess then. Rather be two injuries away from a mess.

Buchner beating out Card is fantastic possibly for the prospects moving forward. I don’t see him transferring, and don’t find Buchner winning the job even out of realm. Card is a prospect with experience, but not a bonafide starter.

Also look around CFB at how many teams needed to win with a backup QB at times this year. I know people like the vacuum of injuries only happen to us but a TON of teams had QB injuries this year. Card likely gets hurt during the year next year. Just happens.

I wonder if Card or Leary signals that the coaches are confident with the direction of the offense, and just need to upgrade talent.

Whereas Armstrong indicates we may want to utilize WRs more, but have been improvising based on the QBs that we have (Wimbush, Book, Buchner, etc...).

It’s weird. You kind of described Buchner too lol.

I just don’t want the staff to be timid when looking for a transfer. Don’t be afraid to hurt Buchner’s feelings. If bringing Card in lights a fire under Buchner’s ass, then awesome.

If anything, at this point in time, Card is more proven QB than TB.
