Let's see how Nate holds up against some teams with size. UNC playing volleyball in the paint on offense while outrebounding us 3 to 1 could go from bad to worse as soon as Nate gets in foul trouble. Southern Indiana got 8 offensive rebounds (we got 5), Youngstown State also got 8 (versus 7 for us) and Radford got 10 OReb (6 for us).
I hear you, but don't you feel like the "eye test" with Nate is just feels different this year? It's like he's the guy, and he knows it. He's never played with this kind of confidence/swagger.

But agreed, big difference between UNC and SIU.

Oh they're gonna get brutalized against teams with actual bigs. But it's not like it's any different from other years, even when ND had a pretty good big, they have always been beat up in the paint.

They honestly have to run these teams out the gym, but that'll be hard to do given that Brey is only playing 7 players a night.

They take on Lipscomb tonight at 7. Should be a pretty packed house since it’s a football weekend.

Lipscomb hanging with ND 29-23 at the half. Lipscomb has one guy over 6-5 but we are playing as small as they are. 20 of our 31 shots are three's.

I guess I'll never learn; Brey ball even when you could pound some tiny team inside.

“Winning is hard” LOL

Defense wasn’t even terrible in the second half (not saying it was good). I’ve never seen a team hit so many contested shots. They must have shot 85%.

Holy shit Goodwin!

For me, it’s hard to say how far this team could go. You can only beat the teams they put in front of you.
Lots of inconsistent offense (3-point shooting) but I’ve mostly been impressed with the defense.

Don’t think we can win the ACC but I wouldn’t be surprised if we did by some based miracle. Laz will be first team ACC NO CAP.

My biggest takeaways- fastest game I've ever seen, over at 8:43 PM. No timeouts in the last minute- never seems to happen. Lipscomb shot one foul shot, with about 2 minutes left after a made three. Only 6 fouls in the entire game on ND. Very weird but nice to watch.

Goodwin wasn't afraid to take that last shot. Thank god for him because the rest of the bunch was pretty ineffective.

Lubin invisible and Starling not much better. Don't see those two guys fighting for every loose ball or rebound, Neither is good on defense. Part of the adjustment from being the best guy on the floor in high school I guess. They're happy to dribble and shoot but the rest of the game isn't there yet.

This team kinda stinks for having so many older guys
Wertz is starting for the first time(full time) Ryan was really the sixth man last year so he’s still getting use to starting. Laz and Goodwin are doing what they always do.

Everyone else is freshman playing basically so I wouldn’t say they stink just yet. Wesley didn’t get grooving till what like 5+ games into last year or something

We have never had a freshman be able to come in and play perfect ball day one. Even Wesley it took him 5+ games to get going. I’d give them some more time to get use to college ball

I'm not even gonna sugar coat it... they are f'd against acc teams. I mean they are struggling to put away the easy part of the schedule.

God I hope I'm wrong, but I have low expectations this year.

You guys talk about the ACC like it’s some conference with ten ranked teams. There’s 3… and ND has four total games against them. Virginia Tech looks tough and maybe Wake or NC State too. Outside of that, Syracuse, FSU, Louisville, Pitt, BC, Clemson, and GT are all varying levels of bad. The pre-conference slate doesn’t matter what happens as long as they win. No one’s gonna look back and say they won on a last second 3. Looking at the other teams, I’ll be very surprised and disappointed if ND doesn’t finish in the top 6.

These "easy" games aren't easy. These teams are loaded with 5th year guys who have played a lot of basketball.
There's depth throughout college bball this year due to everyone getting COVID years if they were in school in 2020. And the ACC is down again. The bottom half of the league isn't, from what I've seen so far, any better than the Radford's of the world.

This is accurate. These mid majors are filled with guys who are experienced and who have played a lot of “buy games” against high major opponents. I pull for Indiana State, as I did my undergrad there, and they almost completely flipped their roster last year to this year with transfers. A bunch of 22/23 year olds aren’t going to be intimidated going into the Joyce Center in late November.

Brey might have to consider playing more than 7 guys.

As talented as these freshman are I don't think they are ready.

The veteran guys that are there are going to need help.

Play JR.

JR is redshirting.

Hammond is still hurt but should be back soon. Brey is gonna go 8 deep probably this year

These are the games that you just win and move on and just don’t lose.

The conference games are the ones that really matter.

At the end of the year when they put your resume up on the screen it doesn’t say “bad wins”. It says Good wins and bad losses. And so far we don’t have any losses

Like your optimism, but I'm using Kenpom as an early indicator and he has us as an awful defensive team, and closer to 8-9 territory in the ACC then 4-5. The guy isn't Nostradamus, but he's pretty damn good when it comes to College Basketball power ratings. Hopefully Hammond brings another dynamic to this team, because I'm not really sure how anyone could feel confident this is a tournament team as presently constructed.

We weren't exactly winning these opening games a year ago; I believe we started 3-2 or so. The Saint Mary's game still haunts me, although they were a quality team with a history of success, those games will hurt you when you're on the bubble.

This start feels better than last year's and we still made the big dance a season ago. Just a friendly reminder/some perspective.

I agree with domer23, the ACC isn't as daunting/deep as it has been in the past. ND could still very easily finish top 5 in the conference. Too early to tell, some young guys are playing key roles and likely still trying to gel with the vets. It's November, too early to jump to too many conclusions.

That would be a big surprise. I sometimes wonder if he can count past 7! lol

Yeah. I was at the Crossroads Classic and really questioned Brey after getting beat by a less than stellar IU. Team looked disorganized and Brey looked like he'd rather be doing something else.

Great win tonight. Actually great.

A flash from everyone w/ Laz, Goodwin making some plays, good D by Cormac & the freshman both played amazing.
Both freshman look like they have a ton of composure which should bode well in ACC play.

This team looks like they could be good. MSU game should show where they are.

Having three legit scorers in Goodwin, Laz & JJ should be able to pull some upsets, IMO.

BG had 64 points with 8:27 to go and ended up with 66. One thing is clear; playing 6 guys is not hurting our ability to close out games. We've been playing our best ball late in games. This one particularly

Bummer that Campbell finally got put in early and he almost immediately rolls his ankle and limps off.

The lack of defense at times is frustrating because the final 6 or 7 minutes prove that they can defend.

The offense is so damn good this year. I’m curious how it will look with Hammond who might return this Friday. On a day where everyone is on, they can easily score in the 90s

Yep, thought the same. I was surprised to see him in but after VAL’s little upswing Brey thought he might catch some fire.

Hopefully nothing serious and we see him back in for some redemption.
