Which is pretty much Orlovsky’s point. Several sacks Pyne took were him not throwing the ball. There was one replay where it was an obvious blitz and Pyne took his drop and instead of planting and firing, he planted then started to pat the ball.
It’s like he assumed Navy had made zero halftime adjustments & he could just sit in the pocket & bide his time to either find an open receiver or start to move the pocket. He learned a hard lesson today…or let’s hope he learned.

Frustrating second half obviously. This game is really the entire season in a nut shell. Some really good football mixed with head-scratching play - and that’s on both sides of the ball. I will say 7–3 is impressive for how things started. I was at the Cal game, and the first half had the worst quarterback play I’ve ever seen in person. At that point I thought five wins would be a stretch.

I hate to say it, but I’m ready for this year to be over. That’s shocking to me - I wait all year for these 12 games. There is just an absolute cap on how good this team can be. The Clemson game was great, but that was an outlier. I thank Drew Pyne for his service. I don’t want to do another year like this

Why in the world did ND get out of its base d and play three defensive linemen on that last Navy scoring drive?

That prevent look with three defensive linemen has been a problem the whole time Freeman has been involved with the defense.

ND had 6 drives for a total of 2 yards in the second half. Probably the worst single half performance on offense in the history of ND football.

I agree that Rees could have done more with screens, slants, etc. but a lot of the issues were simply that you can’t game plan for your QB to just sit there and eat sacks repeatedly when dudes are wide open. You have to trust that he can do what a JV high school QB should be able to do. And he didn’t.
2nd half of USC was pretty damn close. Hendrix played almost the entire half and we had 20 yards of offense, so slightly more movement, but with a fumble. The fumble nearly led to a USC score that could have tied the game, but two holding penalties pushed them back and saved the game.

Seeing who UCLA, Kentucky, and NC State lost to, extra thankful we got the W.

Playing the triple option sucks. You spend 98% of the season prepping for normal offenses. It’s hard for 18-21 year old to stop everything and plan for that dumb offense.

Yeah, that was brutal. This was worse. Glad we won both games.

People keep saying that Navy is tricky, it's hard to prepare for the triple option, etc. As if that's why this game turned out the way it did. That is 100% on the offense, specifically Pyne. 5 yards (or whatever it was) of total offense against Navy of all teams? Dear Lord! Laying an egg in the 2nd half with Coan or Buchner, yeah, we can put that on Rees. But today? No. That's all Pyne. If that dude is anything better than 3rd string next season we're royally effed...

Jack Coan and we’re sitting at one loss and possibly undefeated.

Rees has definitely earned criticism this season but when we talk about the play on the field, this is on Pyne. His inability to read a defense pre/post snap this late into a season is frustrating.

Orlovsky pointed this out all 2nd half and in a tweet reply that guys were wide open and all he needed to do was throw it. Pyne doesn’t throw with anticipation and it’s hurt this offense.

Watching Penix Jr last night made me sad. He shredded Oregons defense and made some incredible throws. We have nothing in the QB room that's even close to that and I can't remember the las time we did. I guess Clausen, maybe Kizer.

Some of you are more bi-polar than the team we root for. The team isn’t perfect and idk why we would expect it at this point in the season. We are what we are, a goodish team that has below average QB play. Progression isn’t a straight line either.

Win and take the lessons with you. This probably helps with focus vs. BC than a blow out.

The most important takeaway is Freeman is finding his groove with game management. He won us the game with the end of 1H aggressiveness. Took timeouts, forced a punt that we blocked. First play deep shot TD. Kelly runs the clock out there.

It is really wild to watch our games this year and then turn on pretty much any other game involving decent teams and they’re just flinging it all over the yard. It’s like we’re playing different sports.

WHile the city’s half was good I think Pyne got lucky and our WRs stepped up. Can’t we break Angeli in gently against BC by leaning on the running game and Mayer? You cannot tell me that he wouldn’t be any worse than Pyne. The so called reason to have DP in there’s Ian his knowledge of the playbook etc. what total BS. Other teams are playing with true freshman and they look good. I would think anything would look better than Pyne. It’s like keeping Joe Schmidt in there’s still despite his backups being physically superior because he could run the awesome BVG shit show. Tommy Rees isn’t the young BVG who only needs a good QB. Hopefully Marcus has a new OC ready to go and do we have to wait until after the bowl game to can Tommy? Can we name a new OC prior to the bowl game but not have them start until after the season? I can’t remember someone less deserving to have a chance to first play QB at ND and then serve as the OC. I think he did ok with the QB opportunity but it held us back and his OC performance up until this season was better with Kelly’s help. He can take his so called geniuses to the NFL then the CFL.

I 100% agree with this. I wish ND had Coan for more than 1 year. I know he wasn't much of a runner, but he could pass. He passed for over 500 yards in last year's bowl loss, I think he could've had a couple of 500 yard passing games this year. He definitely could've lead this team to beat Ohio St.

Postgame Thoughts:
1) This wasn't an ugly win, it was a f-ugly win.
2) What will be the biggest off-season question: the QB situation or to retain or not retain Tommy Rees?
3) Can Brian Mason coach the offense?
4) Has any team ever won a game by getting away with 7 yards and 0 points in half? No identity to this team.
5) We've all complained about our WR group but some have made great catches- Thomas, Mayer, and Lenzy. Lenzy's catch has to be the catch of the year.
6) I hope Angeli gets some PT vs Boston College, I am not a fan of this, but I would go with a 2-QB system vs. USC.
7) Prince Kollie continues to impress.
8) What took so long to get Jaylen Sneed some PT? Glad to see him play.
9) I'd like to see special teams get double digit blocked punts this year; they continue to be special.
10) Quickly move onto Boston College.

Go Irish!!

I actually like Dan Orvlosky commentary. He was fairly blunt. He knows the QB issue and OC play calling are total trainwrecks.
Orlovsky was honest about Pyne’s limitations, and recognizes that ND takes the next step if Freeman lands a QB via the portal.

On the bolded, though… Orlovsky is probably Tommy’s biggest fan outside of Mike Golic Jr. He recognized the playcalling was fine against cover-0, and praises Tommy’s play design and pre-snap motion a lot. Pyne just didn’t get rid of the ball at any point.

All was good but until Tommy was exposed again. Who drops 5 when the opponent is bringing 10? Timmy does.

The second half was the worst half of football I can recall in some time. Just awful. They were lucky to survive and they were playing a team that doesn't really pass.

That's all. Don't even watch the second half in the film room as far as I'm concerned. Just get back to work.
