ND had 6 drives for a total of 2 yards in the second half. Probably the worst single half performance on offense in the history of ND football.

I agree that Rees could have done more with screens, slants, etc. but a lot of the issues were simply that you can’t game plan for your QB to just sit there and eat sacks repeatedly when dudes are wide open. You have to trust that he can do what a JV high school QB should be able to do. And he didn’t.

Presumably Angeli is worse. It is Rees than needs goneing.
All the clips of Rees on the phone or on the mic with Pyne or MF, or whomever he's arguing with, it seems plays his play calling us being either changed or questioned... has anybody noticed this but me?? Is he yelling at Pyne for not going through progressions faster, holding the ball too long, after HH for O-Line play??? I would love to be a 'fly-on-the-wall' to really know what's being said/screamed....

Well, there could be 3-4 injuries next year….

Yes, you can ban me now.
If they don't get a grad transfer it's only going to take 2 (maybe even one) and then we are going through this hell again.

This is the 4th game out of 11 in the Rees//MF era where we have been shutout for a half of football. Seems like a lot.

I counted at least 2-3 plays in the 2H where a dialed up screen would’ve gone at least 20+ yards, if not the house.

Yes, guys were getting open. But Pyne was consistently showing an inability to find the open guy under duress. As a playcaller, you then need to dumb it down and dial up a play where his primary reads are quick and easy.
I don't know. I'm not an offensive coordinator. But how much more dumbed-down could our playcalls get? At least post-snap. We seem to read the play at the line and go with something fairly simple. Pyne just isn't seeing open guys.

FWIW, under Kelly the offense would go into weird extended funks too. Long before Rees was OC. Today was special though.

Yeah. I really have no data to say 4/11 is that poor. Today was like the bowl game. 35 points in the 1st half and then no ability to get anything going in the 2nd half.

He takes so long in his progressions trying to decide if a guy is open or not.

That is, when he can see them over the OL. Today's the day when that special Pyne-ism of having a pass batted down at the line bit them in the ass.

By Navy. Not the biggest guys in CFB.

Pyne is not the answer for next year. Tyler is obviously injury prone. I think we need TWO new QBs for next year alone.

It definitely seems as though Rees shut it down out of respect of something but then couldn’t turn the engine back on when he realised he muffed it - again.

Which is pretty much Orlovsky’s point. Several sacks Pyne took were him not throwing the ball. There was one replay where it was an obvious blitz and Pyne took his drop and instead of planting and firing, he planted then started to pat the ball.

I hate playing Navy. Sampson said it perfectly, it’s like going to the dentist. They got the win, move on.

This is where you need an ESTABLISHED offense. An offense that he practices every single day of every single week. So he knows where everybody is at. This is why qbs can just be plugged into Air Raid and put up good numbers.

This different offense game planning for each opponent is great..... for the nfl.

Pyne should be able to operate the offense in his sleep at this point. Not looking lost and not knowing where people are.

Great Win, after a dynasty changing win last week. Period.
Brian Kelly might be able to buy or get paid to win with grey shirting and cheating...
We'll win with the Irish legends behind us and our new coach.

Glad to see you posting again. Brian Kelly isn't cheating. Most teams play by the rules. But the rules arent good enough for Notre Dame. They play by their own set of rules that nobody else plays by.

We are lucky that he stayed here so long. Notre Dame was holding him back. And that's the honest truth.

Agreed. I have no doubt there were things that Pyne did poorly in the first half, but from a cursory glance he honestly seemed to play a very good 30 minutes of football. And then his weaknesses exploded in the second half.

I don't believe ND was holding him back. I find It reasonably disassociative to not see how much better our team Is this year against the top end of the field, and not see we are better with a coach that can fire up a team,.. BK had the cupboard full with 18-27 year old players at LSU.
A lot of us aren't looking at the age of the line because nobody wants to speak of It. After 3-4 years in junior college, It's hard to see the upside... for a program like our's.

This offense can't seem to find an identity. Stick it to Clemson, pound the rock. A week later, a half of hitting Navy's weak pass D, followed by a half of whatever garbage that was. I was almost as disappointed at the D, but missing Bertrand didnt help. Whatever, on to BC, at least it was a win.

We have no offense. Rees thinks he's an NFL coach working with pros and can be game plan specific for each team.

I’m not buying that Angeli sucks. He has something Pyne doesn’t and that’s size and arm strength. Please can To
My soon. Look at our overall offensive stats at years end and make a decision. If we ever get a very good QB Rees will make him look pedestrian. Can Tommy! The sooner the better.

Actually happy with the second half because I was starting to think that this season could have been special if we’d just gone with Pyne from snap 1 and figured out how to make the offense work with him in training camp and not during early games. But, nope, he’s a hard limit on what this team can do and all things considered we’re really making lemonade out of lemons here.
