Not perfect but it has been as good as Freemans D last year.
Needs to get turn over.
Is it just me or have we come up against 3 QBs that move just good enough to avoid sacks and the like?

Isnt he a line backers coach? He would be vomiting in his mouth most of the game with what they are doing.

Been underwhelmed
I actually disagree completely. The lack of turnovers sucks, but even on the long drives allowed where players have missed plays they are making teams work for it, all while being hung out to dry completely by the offense. Taking away the short field TD on the turnover they allowed 10 pts today while the offense when 3 and out over and over again with Cal starting near midfield repeatedly to start the game.
The best teams play complementary football and I feel like the D has been mostly admirable minus about 1 drive a game while the offense has made their job extremely difficult.

I still don’t get the lack of creativity on the DL. Lack of creativity as a whole rushing the passer. Do we have a blitz package that isn’t A gap with Liufau or Henderson safety blitz?

Other than that he’s been strong.

Thought he called a good game today. Guys were in position to make plays but too many whiffs. Bauer falling for the pump fake with the QB five yards past the LOS was an epic fail

Tbh I think he’s calling the defense really well. It seems like darn near 70% of the issues are our LBs being slow/bad. 20% was the DL being hungover or something against Marshall. 10% a hodge podge of other stuff.
LB has been disappointing. I know Kiser & Marist are athletic but Bauer & Bertrand are Joe Schmidt pre-ankle injury. That’s not a bad thing but the fact it’s the best ND can offer is troubling.

Marist seems to run himself out of too many plays. He runs 100 mph into a brick wall and then can’t make the play. They’re not a good blitzing team. Hopefully Golden has realized that and will continue with the heavy fronts.

You are right about this. That one QB run Marist engaged with the blocker instead of running more of an angle to keep the QB from riding down the side line.

I was impressed with the pressure our defense put on the QB yesterday. NC's QB likes to throw, this will give our D next week opportunities for an interception. Get one...or 2.

Bauer falling for that pump fake is going to live rent-free in my head for a long time.

Find you someone who loves you as much as Notre Dame's LBs love running directly into the the backs of their own linemen on a blitz.

I don't see him taking that. He should stay in South Bend for a few years to reestablish himself in the coaching ranks.

What is Thamel basing it on? Is it just a list of names or is there anything credible he has that has the wind blowing in these directions?

That's a who's who of Power Five coaching candidates.

I'd guess it's just speculation. Golden gets a mention as a former ACC coach, and likely also since it's a weird job, his name gets thrown in as a veteran guy that could provide stability through some of the challenges.

Feldman has virtually the same list in his Athletic article today. Ultimately none of them really know, but Al Golden being mentioned just seems like something for clicks.

Is Collins even fired yet?
Read enough of these "names to know" for some head coaching job stories each cycle and it's basically all the same names, with a little variance by geography or personal ties. The sources are probably mostly agents floating their clients' names to Feldman, etc. I'd bet Golden would like a P5 head coaching job again someday but nothing to worry about at this point.

In case anyone else is interested in the other names listed.

Thanks, St. Paul for giving the source!

Isn't George Godsey the brother of Gary? George Godsey also played for George O'Leary at GT. That's a bit of a weird ND connection among all 3.

Yes they owe him $11 million plus. Similar to the Frost situation, had they waited (until January) in this case, it dropped down to like $7M. Don't quote me on those exact numbers, I don't have them pulled up this second.

Yep, and especially so in this case because they also fired the AD. So unless they are hiring the football coach before the AD, there is no one to even make a list of names right now.

Story in the Athletic has 11 names for the job and no Golden. Most of them have ties to the area or are "hot" names like Deon and the Coastal Carolina guy.

I like Golden and think he is doing a good job but we haven’t seen his full potential as a recruiter. And for the GT job you need someone that can work with less talent and blow the doors off in some recruiting areas.
