Recruiting is enough, but his play calling is crap.
I'm going to be unbearable to you when this is shown to be crap. I'm sure all the top college coaches and now the super bowl winning head coach don't know what they are talking about when looking at OCs. FFS.

He has had one hand tied behind his back and maximized our offense. He changes the system every year to fit the players and hide the deficiencies. I'm sometimes dumbfounded by these idiotic posts.

Playoff teams like tOSU are dripping with WR talent and have missed the cut. We literally made the playoff with a WR trio of:
McKinley, a glorified TE
Sko, a Northwestern transfer
AD, a converted QB.

I suspect that if one went back to posts from 2011 you'd find many of the same people ragging on him.

Hey don't forget the three-star QB he inherited from Mike Sanford.

Exactly. And last year he dropped us off just outside the playoff at #5 with a piecemeal OL. My only hope is that he gives us 2-3 more years before he jumps to the NFL.

And when I am proven correct over the course of his career here you will move the goalposts. Bootlickers are all the same

Sure. Your incredible fuballz brain against the rest of the NFL/high level college athletics. I'm certain you must be right. And what are the current goal posts? If he's güd or not? Does being hired in the NFL qualify as good? What level of offense do we need to see this year for you to think, "yeah, he's good. I'm wrong"? I'm happy to work towards a consensus on the goal posts you swine.

I cannot wait till the season starts so all this type of bickering can end. I look forward to the whining of bad refs, bad calls and awesome moments.

It's like you and a handful or Rees haters verses a lot of knowledgeable college and NFL coaches, players, and fans. Good luck.

Lol, you do not know my background. FYI I am not trying to sing, it is versus.

I am not overly impressed by your (and many other people's) hot takes here. I have been here long before you joined and I watch the "experts" closely. Lol, easy to mock

Come on, man. I'm sympathetic to the idea that the McVay thing is not that big of a deal and much of the rest of the discussion is basically PR for Tommy, but you should be able to establish some acceptable conditions. I think it's fair to say that if Tommy is hired as an OC by an NFL team in the next three years, or if he turns in a top 5 SP+ or FEI offensive ranking in that time that his doubters should dry up and blow away. Also he objectively rules as an ND guy and his sister is trouble.

Two seasons as ND OC and the team is 21-4 by the grace of God and impenetrable defense I suppose.

Looking forward to seeing Rees the OC Version Freeman Era. I'll admit my expectations are high now that Kelly is gone.

What do we believe. Tommy's comments and the beats (Sampson/O'Malley) insistence that BK didn't hold Tommy back, or do we think that he was?

My thought is that BK didn't "handcuff" him overtly, but Tommy like many of the other coaches may have been extremely conservative out of fear.

I think we ran the best offense we were capable of with the players we have and we will do the same this year.

a play caller can scheme people open perfectly every play, theres still a lot of execution on the field that impacts the result.

I am excited to see what the offense looks like with Buchner.

I don't think it was out of fear, I believe it was deferring to the head coaches wishes.

I don't think Kelly limited Rees's play calling on a play-by-play basis, but Kelly discovered at a certain point that he had the talent to turtle up on special teams and offense and rely on his defense once he had a double digit lead. I think he didn't care about the eye test and was comfortable saying "reign it in" on the offense once we got a two possession lead in the 4th. I don't necessarily hate this mindset, because it won us a whole lot of games, but I do expect Rees's preference will be to pour it on when he can.

Freeman made it a point that he wouldn't accept the job without Rees on staff.

Not disagreeing with the point of your post, but if I remember correctly, it was the other way around. Jack was much more inclined to hire Freeman once he had confirmation that Rees would stay. (Which is a just as huge of a compliment to Rees.)

If I'm wrong and Freeman did say that, that's nice but I don't believe him lol. Freeman would've walked barefoot on glass to get the ND job. His next best option would've been what, Duke? Or the Cincinnati job once we hired Fickell away from them?
