Did you even read what the daughter wrote? That’s not a cover up? What is a cover up then?
"you told your players to keep their mouths shut about what really happened."
Coming from the daughter of the guy he fired - who is probably personally invested and may or may not know all the facts herself - I've no idea what that's supposed to mean.
But if Venables was orchestrating a "cover-up" he probably doesn't fire the guy and put out a whole big statement in the first place. That's usually not how coverups work.

Coaches kids being big mad after their dads get fired is nothing new.

I remember BVG’s daughter tweeted a bunch of “what goes around comes around” type of shit when he got shit-canned…

But there was nothing to come back around. BVG was a terrible coach, and went on to prove it again (and again). He got fired for good reason, and his family probably knew it.

Just like there’s probably no “cover up” here. Venables is trying to make a “no tolerance” statement, and told his players to stay out of the media circus.

Saying keep serious racism allegations quiet sounds like a cover up to me. Sounds like he bit off more than he could chew and then flipped full hero mode after he choked.

He is not keeping anything quiet. He fired the guy (when he probably did not HAVE to) and put out a big statement about it. Yes he probably directed the players not to sound off on Twitter - as almost any college football coach would do in this situation - but that's not a coverup, that's just good management and smart PR.

It's too bad the daughter's upset her dad lost his job and she probably thinks he was treated unfairly, but the guy did what he did and Venables is not obligated to employ an assistant coach who says/does racially inappropriate things that offend his players.

If Venables initially tried to keep it hush hush in defense of the coach, which is what she’s saying, that’s a cover up.

He could’ve been told the incorrect version initially. Unless he was there, he’s only going off of what he was told until it was investigated. Reading his press release, seems to be some anger in there. Maybe the coach lied to him in the beginning.

Then again, it’s D1 and a major university. So, WTF do I know.

What we can all agree on is the WR coach being a dumbass. I have zero problem with him being fired.

Me either. He's been dead for 20 years.

Guys, you could be reading Huckleberry Finn out loud to the Klu Klux Klan child care center. It doesn't matter. Don't do it.

He died???? But I just listened to his music yesterday. How can that be? I’m not even going to touch the rest of the stupidity.

I see hot white girls lip synching that word while they shake their asses to rap songs in tic tok on a daily, hourly, minute by minute basis. I can’t figure out why every time I open my app it’s always a face blast of overstimulating racist eye candy. Why aren’t these outrageously hot racist 19 y/o babes being canceled?

Too hott to cancel. If Gundy had a dump truck he’d still be employed.

Should’ve had the player stand up and read out loud to his teammates what was more important than film study. Better yet, read it out loud except for “that” word and have the player say “that” word out loud since people of coach’s color can’t say “that” word.

What happened to making a mistake and apologizing for it, forgiveness, and learning moments? If Gundy had used the word in anger or directed towards a player, then yeah, I can see firing him probably. But reading what a player was typing on his iPad when he was supposed to be paying attention during a film session??? Give me a break. Where was the malice or intent to harm? Sounds like even his players didn't want him fired. Unless there's a whole lot more to this, this is a complete and ridiculous overreaction.

It was the dumbest way to punish. If I’m coach I ask him for the phone and keep it until the end of the meeting. I then talk about accountability and what it means to be part of a team. If he throws a fit and refused to give me the phone, I tell him to leave the meeting. At that point I suspend him for the first quarter of the first game. Why the fuck do you read a message out loud? That is literally what a teacher would do in the 1970’s. I would never want to read what is on there anyway in case it was so bad I had to report it creating a larger headache for myself.

I guess the only thing I don’t really understand (and I don’t know enough to have an opinion as to whether dude should be fired) is why the first couple sentences of Venables statement were about the harm Gundy did to the players, but the players affected overwhelmingly didn’t want Gundy fired.

Can someone explain if I’ve misunderstood? If I haven’t, can someone explain what I’m missing?
