So does this kid come in and start right away? How can you afford to pay a kid that much money to sit on the bench for any amount of time?

If you aren't paying the other QB's, it doesn't really matter. You might not like paying him for sitting, but not sure why it would cost any more.

FWIW, I am very skeptical of the number being thrown around for Rashada. On3 are a bunch of grifters that are taking the word of other grifters. I have no doubt he got paid, but not close to $9.5MM. The lawyer they referenced Caspino is self-serving trying to get more clients. Florida's collective completely denied it, which they could be full of it, but they have no need to because it is legal in California. On3 already deleted the story also.

The short is- On3 (not counting Singer and co in this) are a bunch of scumbags that will do anything for a headline.

Edit: From the lead grifter himself:

Thanks for the update. On3 is pushing the NIL angle so hard it's crazy. They look at that as their main "hook" to cement their place in the industry by trying to sell themselves as a player-ally.

You serious?
Clemson would have given TL 9.5m and laughed to and from the bank.
Definitely serious. No HIGH SCHOOL football player is worth that coin without proving something first. I am all for paying players, but $9m for a QB who isn’t even the top of his class is outrageous.

Yeah, in hindisght you can say that player was worth a ton of money. However, with as many five star busts as there are, no player is worth millions without having played. You have to think these huge NIL deals have to have contingencies about playing time, stats, etc. or be largely incentivized.

My understanding is that ND made a competitive pitch (not offer!) about what he could do both as a WR and with NIL if he were to transfer to ND, but he ultimately decided to finish things out at UNC.
That is quite different than some of the things that were rumored around Addison.
Yes Notre Dame can help an elite WR make more money via NIL than they might make at a lower-profile program. No we're not giving you a house.

That's what I don't get about this.
If you're going to give a high school kid that kind of money (even if it's not $9.5M, it's probably multiple seven figures), what message does it send to the guy who's going to be your actual starting quarterback this season? How much can he then demand?

I may be misunderstanding the @notredomer23's point, but "inches from doing the same thing with Downs" to me meant that a big-time school was in contact with a player that was NOT in the transfer portal, which is supposed to be a no-no.

USC stole Addison before he even officially entered the portal, and ND was apparently in communication with Downs the same way. You'd like to think it was Downs that was exploring ways to maximize his potential, and not ND illegally poaching, but we could never know for sure.

Yep this. ND in some capacity was contacting Downs when he was not in the portal. Probably via Derek Hamilton considering Kyle and Downs are great friends and train together. Idk all the details on why it never happened. We like to think ND does things the right way, and I generally think that is true, but they’re also trying to keep up with the best of ‘em.

Is there any chance that players are reaching out to other teams to see potential landing spots before they go in the portal? It wouldn't be the best look to go to the portal, not get a team you want to contact you, then have to go back to the school you were leaving with your tail between your legs.

I’m not going to believe any NIL values for unsigned recruits until I start seeing receipts. These values are insane and I see no way to legally validate them.
They're also getting something in return which varies from deal to deal, I'm sure.

There's so many shades of gray here that it's hard to truly "tamper" unless you're a complete idiot. Communicating through back-channels is not difficult.

The notion that players - at least the highly-sought-after ones - are going into the portal completely blind as to their options is nuts, and probably naive. These players all know each other. So do their parents. They know coaches too.
Is having off-the-record conversations "tampering" or making a smart decision?

I don't get this comment. Aren't the On3 sites just established sites from other services that moved over?

The coaching staffs are going to set this market. If they think someone is worth the money they're willing to shell out to get a player to sign, far be it for me to judge that or say otherwise.

Markets.

The national guys, and moreso, Shannon Terry is who I mean here. Everything they're doing with NIL is at best disingenuous.

Completely agree with both of you. Guys like Addison and Downs have options, and they'd be foolish to not be exploring those behind the scenes, even if they're not in the portal... and schools like ND with specific needs would be foolish to not use back channels to put out feelers.

My only point was to say that whether Addison got offered extra benefits from USC or not, the primary driver is that you're getting a commitment from another team's player before he is even publicly/legally on the market, which was what @notredomer23 seemed to be getting at. He wasn't saying ND is offering all kinds of extra benefits outside of NIL the way USC [allegedly] did with Addison.

And then they are going to get themselves fired. The boosters that throw this money out are going to want these players to play and force the coaches to play them or throw money out to fire the coach.

So, the guy that was very upfront about his desire for NIL does not wish to discuss the NIL he just signed with the program that is under NIL scrutiny? Clown show.
He probably has someone (wisely) telling him to shut up and stop drawing attention to it.

So what changes? Guys get fired with winning records all of the time now. They all have buyouts too.

Article in The Athletic confirms he hasn't signed. Said they expect to have it finalized in a couple of weeks. He may not have signed a NIL deal yet, but you can be sure he agreed to one in principle when he committed.
