From another board:
Former Michigan TE Shawn Thompson is a friend for many years and Regional insurance manager with whom I do business. In the 2000 Orange Bowl vs Alabama, Shawn had a 50 yard catch from Tom Brady to set up the game tying FG which sent the game into OT. Then in OT he caught the game winning 25 yard TD pass from Brady.
Shawn's 9 year old has fought cancer her whole life...and it has appeared extremely dire at times
Shawn shared with me that because of the UM connection and the fact the Carr's lost a young child to cancer 6-7 years ago -- the Carr family has become very good friends with Shawn and his wife...plus consistent altruistic supporters of fund raisers for Shawn's daughter.

Before we even started our business call today he asked if I was excited about Carr's commitment. He told me that for months Jason Carr has told Shawn it looked like CJ was heavily leaning towards ND. The Dad has shared with Shawn -- 2 former Wolverine players -- that he was very impressed with ND and fully supported this decision. In their conversations they even talked about how if CJ did not go to Michigan, he should go to a place with the lofty ideals, stature and value proposition of ND ( paraphrasing). Shawn specifically said it would have felt totally out of character if CJ elected an "OSU or Alabama".

I asked if he expected CJ's commitment to stick knowing both how much time there is until Carr enrolls AND the landmine of NIL lures. Shawn said you could not be dealing with a more grounded down to earth family. They will not get caught up in the NIL chasing like alot of prospects. "This family does not f*%& around. They made an educated , tempered decision and they are the last family to jerk people around. I strongly feel he will stay 100% committed to ND barring an unforeseen like Marcus Freeman and Tommy Rees both leaving ND before he enrolls ."
Shawn added that CJ is both a great kid and a STUD on the football field. He felt it was a BIG loss for UM not to get him.
Shawn finished by saying he hopes CJ's decision now opens the door for UM with Dante Moore.

. I said Good luck
Nothing earth shattering but I appreciated the perspective of a close family friend who had talked to the Dad throughout the whole process.

I have to admit watching Carr commit didn't excite me, with the Michigan ties his family has it appeared to me there wasn't any excitement shown by his parents.

However after reading all the news here from IE, Carr wanted ND as much as ND wanted Carr, great information by all who shared- much appreciated.

This current full coaching staff hasn't coached a game yet and this is by far a better full coaching staff that Kelly has ever had. Kudos to Freeman discussing with Carr about his plans after Rees moving on (I will be shocked if he is here after next year).

As far as for Dante- I wanted him to be apart of the 2023 class and the film I've seen of him impresses me. Dante F'd Dante, he could've been a part of this class and could he still?

With the Carr commitment & the possibility of decommitting, I view it like Keon Keeley's. They both committed early, Carr will continue to get recruited like Keeley, but in the end like Keeley Car will sign with ND.

Welcome to ND!

I don’t follow your point…post 723 makes it sound even more likely he will play at ND. Why would that post change someone’s mind to thinking he may decommit?

ThePiombino can correct me if I’m wrong, but I think he suggested reading Lax’s post because it reaffirms the idea that CJ’s family was behind his decision to commit to ND 110% and that they don’t mess around with empty promises nor are they likely to chase the NIL. Irishandy didn’t get the impression that the family was supportive, and this reference counters that idea.

He started his post about not being excited then he said: “However after reading all the news here from IE, Carr wanted ND as much as ND wanted Carr, great information by all who shared- much appreciated” which to me meant he believes he will stick. That’s why Piombino’s post was so confusing. Maybe you’re right and I misunderstood 🤷🏻‍♂️ Thanks

Has anyone else watched a full game of his on YouTube yet? I have.
He threw a close one at his receivers ancles that looked a bit like Wimbush (no disrespect to BW but he did do that once a game or so)
But otherwise he looked excellent.

CJ is 17 and taking online classes. Just get the kid on campus and go after Sayin. Carr vs Angeli. Sayin redshirts. Each plays 2 years and go pro.

So many people think that Sayin would want to come play after Carr reclassifies. The reality is this: If ND doesn't land Moore in 23, then the 23 QB or 24 QB (if Carr reclassifies) is going to be a tier b qb

I get where you’re coming from. I still have some BK PTSD myself. However, things are different with this staff. I think they either continue to recruit Dante and land him, or land Sayin if Carr is able to reclassify.

I don’t see why Dante would want to be the only good player in the ‘23 class for Midagain.

I may have confused the situation, but 100% this. Thank you.

if the rest of the rooster keeps improving at the same rate as it is currently under Freeman I think the QBs will want in like they do at OSU etc.

Maybe it's the BK PTSD talking but Carr is the highest-rated QB we've recruited in 15 years. Landing him - alone - is tremendous and should be celebrated. I'm not going to talk myself into being disappointed if we don't get a second "best QB recruit in 15 years" in the same two-year cohort.
That said, yes of course we should keep recruiting Moore and Sayin. I'd just start talking to '23 Plan Bs at this point as well.

Well if you want to start talking yourself into possible championships going forward , we’re gonna need to start nailing down back to back years of STUDDD qb’s.

PTSD or not lol

Celebrate, but don't let the staff rest on their laurels.
Not that I'm thinking Carr won't, but a lot of these 5 stars don't work out.

Exactly. Not just at the QB position, we need to continue to push for the very best at every position. The staff is doing exactly this, which is great to see. We already have 2 stud Safeties in the 2023 class and the staff is still pushing for Caleb Downs. Even if he chooses ND, the staff will still push for Peyton Woodyard and Tae Johnson in the 2024 class. ND leads for both of them. The 2023 class has 4 solid DL and they're pushing for Jason Moore. The staff is off to a great start on the 2024 DL class and are still in the thick of things for Justin Scott, Elijah Rushing, Nigel Smith, etc.

If we want to close the gap on Bama, OSU, UGA, etc. then we need to keep pushing for the best players at every position, year in and year out.

Carr reclassifying would still have to get through admissions correct?

If this scenario comes to fruition, this isn't the Notre Dame Football we grew up with and then some.

Regardless of it all, you know what eases my mind in all of this? Buchner being all he can be this fall. Period. He's the bird in hand.
