I was tweaking my equipment setup last night to make sure I'm still carrying a medium load, and then realized the way your stats affect not just your armament effectiveness, but affect them differently both from slots 1-3, and based on which hand you're carrying the weapon in.

Are the big stat differences I see truly as big of a deal as the numbers make it seem?

Like, my Right Hand first slot carries ~350 damage. If I carry a staff as my primary in my right hand, is the damage debuffed if I switch it to the left in favor of carrying a sword at the same time? What do those armament numbers for handedness and slot ACTUALLY mean?
I’ve not delved too much into it and I probably should but I keep the night flame sword in my right so I can use the special moves it comes with. It would be similar to any weapon with a special move or Ashes if war applied to it. It has to be in the right hand. Same if you applying a special grease or magical enchantment. I don’t believe you can do those things to your left hand weapon unless it’s a shield and then you only uses ashes of war or spells that work on a shield. I may be wrong but idk. It’s complicated. I may run around and hit some ads to see what does what.

I think most weapons have a base damage that can be improved by upgrading at the blacksmith and then the bonus damage is based on the character attributes and the weapons scaling rating. I have also gained addition bonus damage from various encantations, equipped talismans and the physique potion. For example if I go into a boss fight I pre buff with a couple encantations, bring out my summons, hit my physique potion and enter the fight I have had little difficulty taking down dragons or any of the main story bosses. I’m on the last one now and running around and gearing up before that. That seems to be a much bigger help than what hand my weapon is in. I may be missing something big though Im not struggling anymore

Magic can be your best friend but you'll be limited with it if you've started as a melee build of course. Gravity magic isn't great in most instances. There's an NPC in the basement of some ruins in Limgrave that can provide more spells if you're interested.
I started as a warrior, but jacked up my faith and intelligence pretty early, knowing I would want to diversify.

I probably should have just started as an astrologer or prisoner based on what I know now and how I want to play, but I'll blame it on this being my first souls-style game.

I'm still a noob with hardly any skills, but I absolutely see why people with Souls experience were so excited for this game to drop. The ability to jump into a specialty that excites you, or else to start as a wretch and see where the game takes you, AND for the game to deliver so completely on the visuals/enemies/environment/lore while you're at it, is amazing.

Can you do an effective version of a sniper/archer in Elden Ring?? Where you sneak up on groups or enemies and just sling arrows??
Damnit nerds, this was a legit fellow-nerd question!!!

It looks like there's some stealth and bow builds out there, but I don't know how effective they are or how viable. I'm interested in that myself. I like going stealth on occasion in games, but I never get to do it when I'm playing with buddies. They're always like...

My opinion is that the bows suck in this game, but I’ve never actually leveled any of them up. There are dozens of arrow types, so you can really get into specifics of which you use against which enemies, exploiting their weaknesses.

And it is a pivotal strategy, especially in overmatched areas to pick out targets from groups and lure them away for some 1v1s, so you don’t end up getting gang banged.

But again on the bows, and their ineffectiveness. There was one boss i versed, Radahn, who’s really risky getting in close against. So it thought, if just use my arrows while the npc’s engage him. There fire rate was so slow that I didn’t dent him, especially with misses due to erratic movements, that I soon switched to throwing knives, which I could chuck maybe 5x as fast and was finally able to melt him.

I just got him afflicted with bleed and rode around rezing my Summons. Maybe hit him with rock sling a few times. Every time I got close I’d die. Took forever but the bleed killed him. Loo

Not a fan of bows in this game. It haven’t tried to much or gotten any good gear. If there is a viable build I’m sure someone would post it on YouTube. There is always videos on builds available.

Couldn't agree more. I've always been a souls fanboy fwiw but I really hold this game in high regard and it exceeded all my expectations. I beat it a couple weeks ago but haven't stopped playing. It's just so much fun to continue trying different builds and practicing boss fights again. Hope you continue to enjoy it, the full journey is amazing.

I think I over-leveled myself prior to taking on Godrick… especially with that NPC and my jellyfish keeping him occupied. It was jump-attacks galore on his back.

Hit him with some magic once the second phase started, rolled behind his fire attacks a couple of times, hit him with a couple more jump attacks to the rear, and disposed of him on the first attempt.

I’m assuming that is not how it’s designed to go… but my capacity for grinding levels before doing anything even remotely scary knows no bounds.

Sometimes you just have to grind on boars until level 60...

I recently have beaten all of the main bosses and all but two of the demigods. I have the final boss to go and it seems like the game just increased all its difficulty like overnight. I’m having to respec a few times to find a survivability balance.

There are lots of things in the game where stealth isnt a option. To progress you are going to have to engage some of the things you encounter face to face or at least ranged-melee mix.

Some of the end game fights can really make you feel like you're not over-leveled at all (if you felt you were previously.) Especially a certain optional boss with a prosthetic arm...

Level 82 warrior, but I've bumped up my faith and intelligence to make him a warrior-mage. Those stats are on par with my strength and dex.

I attack with the Twinblade until I take too much damage, then I roll out to safety, hit the flask, then spam magic while I'm at a distance.

It's going to catch up to me at some point now that I'm past Stormveil and heading towards what I assume is the academy, where bad guys are gonna be flinging spells my way.

82 on Godrick is definitely overleveled haha.

What the fuck is this Silence of the Lambs gaming shit!?!

Yeah, it's a bit dusty from being in the garage, and it was in a bar before that. I want to say the bar owner's name was Buffalo something...Buffalo Bob?

I finally got around to playing Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin after it had been sitting in my Steam list for years. I didn't plan on going through a New Game+, so I decided to follow a walkthrough to make sure I didn't miss anything important on the first run. I'll say this...the game doesn't lack for areas or content. I felt like I did a lot less backtracking in this one compared to the first game. Part of that probably had to do with the guide. I got really tired of seeing the same areas over and over in the first DS since I didn't have a clue where to go playing blind the first time. Following the guide actually made it more enjoyable for that reason, the scenery stayed fresh as did the enemies and I still managed to chalk up 70 hours of gameplay between the DLC and grinding.

The combat is still very good. If anything it felt just a smidge easier (Although the Cyclops Hippo guys early on are a bit unforgiving and turn a bit too fast for their size imo). Past that the difficulty felt pretty balanced aside from a few bosses. Loved all the gear options and the wider array of spells, pyros, miracles, and hexes (Although I was pretty much a STR build so I didn't cast much). The plot is still nothing to write home about, but at the very least it wasn't completely obscured in runes and bullshit quite like the first was. I shouldn't have to be a mind reader to understand what the history and story is, tea leaves shouldn't be required. A little digging or some detective work is fine, but the main plot shouldn't be so cryptic that I need to Wiki what the hell actually happened. Fortunately there wasn't as much of that in this version, it seemed like talking with NPCs repeatedly divulged much of the lore to some extent. The sounds (Wouldn't call it music) and atmosphere are still pretty damn spooky, excellent work there.

Overall I'd give it a "B/B-" as far as an Action RPG. As heavy and rewarding as the combat is, I still get the feeling that the game is a bit too repetitious which hurts the overall enjoyment. I felt the same way about the first Dark Souls. A critic on GameSpot described DS2 as such: "too often sacrifices fun, replaces it with tedium, and tries to defend that choice by calling it a challenge." That's exactly how I've felt about both games, although a bit less so with the second. It's nice having a challenging game that you don't just one shot everything, but at the same time how often are you sitting there beating your head against a boss or a dungeon and wasting hours at a time? Had to teleport back to the bonfire multiple times in the Gutter because it was so dark and the floor would give out causing you to fall somewhere you couldn't climb up from. Were it possible to buy a simple torch it wouldn't have been such an issue, but after the fourth or fifth time having to teleport back to the top I was ready to move to the next area. That's not challenging, that's just tedious.

Plot/Characters: (D)
- Still better than the first story wise, but it was still pretty bare bones and uninspired. There weren't really any memorable NPCs imo. How am I supposed to praise the sun when I'm the only member of the Sun Bro covenant?!
Graphics: (B-) - I rank this based on when the game came out. There was nothing really wrong with the graphics, they seemed no different than the original game which was released 3 years prior. Since they didn't really move the needle from the previous game this felt reasonable.
Sound: (B+) - Sometimes the minimalist approach works, and given the dark atmosphere of DS the lack of big bombastic tunes or a distracting soundtrack works in it's favor. The game would actually lose something I think if it had a sprawling soundtrack.
Gameplay: (A) - This is where DS always shines. I wouldn't say all the AI is well balanced, or that every animation is perfectly smooth, or every hitbox is completely succinct, but it's pretty close. The combat is just enjoyable, and the myriad of weapons and spell options adds to it.
Entertainment: (B+) - The game was pretty fun. It felt like an improvement in some ways over the original as mentioned. Still a bit tedious in parts.
Replay Value: (B-) - If I hadn't done a guided walkthrough I probably would be interested in going through NG+ and maybe playing with a spell casting build, but as it stands the only achievements I'm missing are a few spells, hexes, and miracles to complete everything. As such I don't really feel the need to get the rest and I'll be moving on. I made a New Year's resolution this year that I would replay less old games and work through more of my Steam backlog.
Overall: B/B-
