This thread is going to get hot. And given that it's a geopolitical event there are certain to be political opinions. Just try to be as respectful to others as possible. If people can't, we'll give short "timeouts" from posting in the thread to cool off.

Seems to be going better than expected…

This isnt the thread for scoring cheap political points and hot takes. Take it to the political thread please. last warning or there will be sanctions.

Last warning… lol

In all fairness, aren’t all wars political? Shouldn’t this be tucked between Biden and Trumps Presidency threads?

I have seen some politicians and even people on here say some strangely pro-Russia comments. Though I am a child of the 80’s so that always seems weird. Let me see if I can find any.

Well this is a little awkward.
I dont have a dog in the fight. Russia isn't a good place. But they aren't bad people. Ukraine is the definition of a shithole. Do I think they should have freedom to choose which shitty government they elect? Yep. Do I want to risk nuclear war for them? Nope. Sorry.

There was a time to seriously help Ukraine. I think I've posted about it. It was a month ago with American boots on the ground. That was the only thing that might stop what is currently happening. But alas... that didn't happen... good luck to Ukraine. Enjoy your new masters.

Congrats on... thinking you owned somebody. At least you got Cack on your team.

Russian's and Ukrainian's are the pretty much the same people, except russian's have just proven to be real shitty people.

Ukraine has historically been one of the most corrupt in Europe. Zelensky wasn’t necessarily seen, by his people, as a savior to Ukraine’s corruption issues.

Going down memory lane. Bidens moment of admitting to withholding $1b in aide to leverage the firing of a “corrupt” prosecutor. Like firing one guy would save Ukraine. Lol.

Trumps moment of withholding aid to get dirt on Hunter.

Cocaine Hunter just being involved with anything Ukraine should be a red flag… but it’s not really.

I feel like Russia is some sort of crime boss but Ukraine is that nasty prostitute American politicians can’t help themselves in not using from time to time.

Russia v Ukraine. Geographical politics. Really sucks because war is war, the people will be most affected. But at the end of the day Russia might “win” the war, they might destroy Ukraine… but Russia might also might destroy Russia. 2 birds one stone. I find myself caring less about this conflict than I care about the dope dealer killing another dope dealer down the road. Ones dead and the other has a lot of unwanted attention. If Russia does get control of Ukraine at least it will be one less place American politicians go to get their hands dirty.

Maybe there is comfort is just not giving a shit. And only giving a shit when my gas is more expensive and grain/wheat just skyrocketed. But I run my card like any other day and then onto a college basketball game and then post game drinks only to find out our bar of choice post game had a vodka shortage. Stuck drinking jack and coke all night. Fucking war!!

Ukraine pilots Are more familiar with the Russian made jets Poland has thus the reason for Poland to supply.

In return the US would send newer US jets to Poland.

Just like the denazification and peacekeeping in Donbas. We know where this is headed the longer Russia fails

correct. It’s been clear from the start to anyone level-headed that if he can’t win it, he will nuke it. We have to stop him.

Poland already has a big order of F-35's on the way. They currently fly F-16's, which are still being made for export. Giving their 20 something MiG-29's to Ukraine would actually help long term in inventory management & training.

I dont think that's been remotely clear to anyone. That's sorta what makes Russia a difficult bear to deal with. Kiev is a very important city to anyone with the sort of Pan-Slavic/Kievan Rus dreams Putin has.

We aren't going to send in American troops so you might as well stop begging us to. If Russia is legit considering nuking Ukraine.... the best use of your time would be to drive away from any population center and/or military bases.

I'll go step by step for you.

By putting boots on the ground prior to a Russian invasion, you all but guarantee Russia won't invade. The entire calculus Russia makes in that situation changes. It goes from "what sort of sanctions are we gonna get" to "our entire military is about to be destroyed." They would have raised a stink about having US troops so close to Russia, but they could hardly be taken seriously with tens or hundreds of thousands of their own troops on the border with Ukraine.

Unless they do and you get nuclear war. That's what makes your position laughable.

That would've been too late.

The answer is a year ago, the day Russia moved it's first additional unit into position along the border. Biden would've been wise to tell Putin, "You currently have 50,000 troops positioned on the border of Ukraine, which is a neutral country. If you add to those numbers and show any inclination that you would invade a neutral country, a coalition of European, Canadian, Australian and US forces will rapid deploy to insure the sovereignty of a neutral Ukraine."

I don’t think the US ever had intentions in stopping a Russian invasion militarily. I think they were just sort of hoping they wouldn’t. But also maybe hoping they would so they cripple them financially.

The next thing Biden should do is announce that Russia & Belarus are formally invited into NATO and the EU so that all Russians and Belarussians can have the same economic and security advantages that current members have. Lets see how long Putin and Lukashenko stay in power.

The two biggest foreign policy failures of the US & the West in the 20th Century were trading access to near-slave labor that built a strong, adversarial China and not absorbing all former Warsaw Pact countries into the West. It's like the we forgot how well Marshall Planning worked in Japan and Germany.

This is the other side of the coin. The cost of invading Ukraine, without any blowback from the West would've been tough for Putin to afford as it will drag on and on. Add to that, the sanctions that he's already earned and the future sanctions that will be added, he's already cost himself his job... and probably his life.

The best plan now is to let Putin bleed out slowly until a General puts a Grach to the back of his head.

China seems to the be the wildcard in my mind. I’m thinking they are staying out of everything and will decide later to either support Russia or be the savior of Ukraine or savior of whatever other mess Putin creates.
