FWIW, it was absurd that we never recruited him. Truly absurd. But I do get that we thought we had two very good prospects to choose between in Buchner and McCarthy. It was an odd year.
.

I like to think this is the kind of thing Freeman will grill Rees about. He should make him explain this to him. Kind of humiliate him about it in front of others.

Either he's already grilled him or Tommy learned from example.

Tommy's offered #1-2-3-4-7-8-11 in '23 and #11 isn't a take until his QB1 commits.

He also has 4 offers out to Top 10 QB's in '24, one out for '25 and has had countless '24 & '25 QB's in for visits.

247 saying UCLA, Miami, LSU (lol), and Auburn are Williams' 4 main schools. Don't know if I believe that list but at the very least would be good for parity in the sport.

Interesting how a player who wasn't "allowed" to contact schools until a few hours ago already has a list.

Correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t almost all football scholarships one year renewable deals? I know some schools, like ND, guarantee them for four but that’s not the norm.

Just because it’s “hard” on the coaches doesn’t mean athletes shouldn’t be allowed to transfer. It’s hard on them when coaches bail.

Even the most capitalistic sports leagues, like European club soccer, are more restricted than CFB now. If you want to buy your rival's star striker, you have to buy out his contract by paying his club.

Unregulated dark NIL money and free agency is complete anarchy, and it's unsustainable. It's also bad for the vast majority of CFB players, who will never play a down in the NFL and have little NIL value.

Yet another case of a small group of elites "freeing" themselves from the "oppression" of an even smaller and more elite group at the expense of the majority. And we're supposed to applaud this as justice? Liberalism sucks.

This is so true imo. Feels good, but in reality it’s just terrible in practice and will either get fixed or begin to destroy the oppressive system that’s so unfair to every single college athlete. Only the top of the heap gets to benefit as it undermines the system (which is admitted very imperfect) that gives nearly every college athlete a pretty good deal all things considered.

I fail to see why it’s bad for the majority of players. If they don’t want to transfer they don’t have to. Also, it’s not unlimited transfers, it’s one time.

This stuff is inevitable when huge amounts of money is involved. Think I saw where schools spent $100 million to coaches who had been fired. Obscene. Forget the players, change needs to be made at the top.

The schools/conferences will have to get together and make
some kind of rules for this free agency when it comes to players and coaches. NCAA is a joke. At some point,
the way it’s going, you have to imagine there’s going to be a super conference of the Power 5 teams, and ND. Maybe the players actually unionize at somepoint as well, and i
dont think that is far fetched.

You think NIL and the transfer portal haven't hurt most of the players on Oklahoma's roster? None of this stuff happens in isolation. For every Caleb Williams who can now sell himself on the open market to the highest bidder, there are hundreds without those options that are still working as hard as ever but now with even less certainty. I'm utterly disinterested in helping guys like Rattler and Williams get rich sooner. Let's talk about what's best for the average CFB player.

Single year scholarship commitments are the logical next step from the most aggressive football programs. If the players are going to test the portal every offseason, the colleges have no reason to commit 4 years of resources to them. Jimbo Fisher would probably cut 1/4 of his roster right now if he could get away with it.

I’m just curious when they will cut the word “student” out of “student-athlete”. At least have the “athlete” part first. Who are we kidding anymore?

I can’t wait till the semipro football is decoupled from collegiate institutions. Just go ahead , create a semipro league and let those who want to go pro go there. Leave school to the amateurs.

The universities get all of the hate for benefiting from the NFL’s rule, on having to be three years removed from high school. The NFL and the universities both benefit from this set up. It is a free minor league for the NFL. There is more than enough money floating around in the NFL for a minor league system to be set up and paid for by the pro teams. This would allow the high school players to choose which path is right for them and the universities can get back to helping student-athletes.

It's too bad covid absolutely fucked the AAF and the XFL 2.0. Talk about bad timing.

Those were gonna fail anyway IMO

I think the AAF probably would have but at least we might have gotten some modernizations to the game before it went caput. The sky judge was really really popular and if it had stuck around longer maybe the NFL would consider it more seriously.

The XFL may have too, but with Vince wanting to pump 2 billion into it or whatever he might have brute forced it to stay around a while.

Nobody is going to end up benefiting more from this new era of free agency + NIL than USC. Their roster was full of so many holes that it was going to take 2-3 years for any coach to dig them out of their current situation. Riley might be able to do it in 1-2 because he can grab a dozen developed players through the portal if he wants.

Again tell me how most of Oklahoma's roster is being hurt? Because they lost their quarterbacks and will lose a few more games on the field? Because they are learning the harsh reality that people who are more valuable get paid more?

The people that hurt these players the most are the school administrators who care very little for the education they receive and the coaches who lie to them. I'd say Lincoln Riley bailing on his players has hurt the players on Oklahoma's roster. It's easy to see why these players don't have a commitment to their schools and are off chasing money. Attitude reflects leadership and the leaders in this case (coaches, administrators) have laid the groundwork for this attitude for a long time. Fix that first.

Counter point:

Most of the players on Oklahoma's roster were hurt because Lincoln Riley decided to bolt for USC the minute he knew he wasn't making the college football playoff, not because Caleb Williams is good enough to use his one-time transfer to find the best situation since his head coach and QB-development guru left.

It sucks that not every player on Oklahoma's roster is good enough to go shop themselves around... but they aren't 'stuck' at OU with uncertainty because of Caleb Williams having the agency to transfer one time. They're stuck because their coach did what highly paid coaches do.

It's not realistic at all (again because of the money involved), but the best thing would be some kind of legal tampering period between schools with HC openings and coaches that are actively coaching elsewhere.

Treat coaching changes like regulated free agency so the kids know what to expect and have an idea of *when* to expect it. That would go a long way towards regulating the wild west nature of player transfers, or at least providing some scaffolding for kids to make better decisions.

The problem is that you're then talking about moving NSD back, which is nearly impossible because of the time between the end of most fall semesters and early enrollment in January, so idk what the answer could be.

All I know is that I would encourage my son choose a school, not a coach... but the reality for the top 1% of college athletes is that they aren't picking a school so much as a path to the NFL. Some choose schools for love of the institution, location, or chance to compete for championships. But a guy like Caleb Williams is picking a developmental path to playing QB. He doesn't have an amateur venue available to pursue that goal outside of college enrollment, so can we fault him for choosing a coach rather than a school? And can we fault him for using his one-time transfer to answer his developmental process falling apart?

IMO, the transfer portal and NIL is not good for CFB, and we will see more and more abuse, ect ect. I think this is the tip of the iceberg. Anyone who says that getting a free education, food, rooms, books ect for free isn't enough and similar to getting paid is just dead wrong.

Now with that being said, I have always wondered what it would look like if we kept the transfer rule, but made it like Baseball/Football where you have to be 3 years removed from HS before you can go pro. Why can't kids be made to stay at a school for 3 years b4 using their 1X transfer. If you transfer before that, you get slapped with a year on the bench.

Yeah, he'll get them out of the gutter with the portal. The bigger issue for him is building an offensive line with the lack of OL talent out west.

I keep asking anyone who will listen because I don't know but how does he portal affect the player cap per year? Have you heard anything about that?
I mean, for example... if you take a class of 25 kids... and lose 6-7 kids of varying class standing to the portal.... how many portal kids can you take in?

What's the percentages again? Something like 3% of 3% of high school football players make it to the NFL. The NFL has an average career of 3 years. These kids are not getting what is best for them for the next 10 years, let alone 40. The open transfer portal is just feeding the unrealistic thought that everyone is going to make it and they need to be somewhere new to show it off. This all can be stopped right now if football operated like the MLB. I firmly believe if they said you can play in the minors right out of college, OR you go to college for at least 3 years, we'd see a lot less of this stuff going on.

Yes, but the NFL has negative financial incentive to do that. Right now they force players to go to college for three years and laugh all the way to the bank that they have the best / free minor league in all of sports.
