Lorenzo showed up our Senior WRs as a true freshman. Those guys disappeared as usual when Ok St tightened coverage the 2nd half. That was super disappointing, we really should have quit throwing their way. I think we should have leaned more on Mayer, Styles, and Tyree. Those guys had the hot hand and were pretty good all day.

Mayer had 13 targets, 7 in the 2H.

This game was lost the moment they decided to sit on the ball to end the 1st half BEFORE OSU made its defensive adjustments.

This was by far the biggest blunder that Freeman made and his comments after the game to explain his decision making process was a joke.

We went 0--5 throwing to Lenzy 2nd half until the final drive, and something like 1-4 or worse throwing to Austin before that last drive. That's all I'm saying, Styles went 4 catches on 5 targets 2nd half. Kid played well all game, he never disappeared. Might as well have leaned on him and Mayer more, they were getting it done.

Fisher held his own pretty well especially when you consider 1) the opponent and 2) he hasn't played in 4 months. I was impressed.

He did. I would be interested in seeing him at left guard. That side could be devastating.

there really is an art to getting open as a WR.
Styles has it and Austin and the rest just don't. Especially Austin though.

Clark Lea and Todd Lyght say hello. It’s really a shame Lyght could possibly be that bad a recruiter. Almost impossible given his resume. His old teammate Dre Bly is the opposite at UNC

Right…they’re not walking through that door anytime soon. Didn’t Mickens recruit & develop Bryant & Gardner at Cincy? It’s not going to get fixed overnight. Freeman is no miracle worker.

This. Dan Orlovsky made this comment on the play where Lenzy got abused at the line and then ran his route to the sideline. Gotta get a new WR coach.

Neither are ready for big time defenses much less the NFL. They did nothing today to move the needle as far as their NFL grade. I think Lenzy knows this but Austin may think he can defy the odds. If he does, he’ll end up on IR in camp.

Okay but you’ve posted multiple places that THIS staff is reaping what they sowed recruiting wise. That’s just not true. That’s the point.

Well, shit. That was certainly winnable.

Poor recruiting in certain positions again rears its head, couple of young coach mistakes and Coan, while he was a monster, made some critical errors.

Sanders' runs were significant - the LBs couldn't pursue for shit. Tackling. TACKLING!

Oh well. I don't really gaf about the shit people will write and say about this program and not winning the big game, etc, etc. I'm as positive today as I was yesterday that they will go farther in the right direction than they would have with Kelly at the helm.

To be honest the game played out out how I thought it may. Teams that have a coaching change before the bowl don’t often have much success. Compound this with the youth on the staff and you get the result of this game. I’m game adjustments/coaching was not great. Expected for a first time coach, in his first game. An example would be going into halftime with three timeouts in your pocket. No reason one shouldn’t have been taken when Okie State was having a successful drive to end the half. Freeman will learn this.

Ultimately, after this game I feel even stronger there needs to be someone on staff with HC experience to help with game management. It will take Freeman time to learn how to manage a game being he hasn’t had to do it before. Additionally, DC needs to be a big time hire, that moves the needle.

Logan Diggs might be the most overhyped true freshman 3 star in ND history. I expect Audric, Tyree, and the incoming freshman to surpass him and for him to end 3rd at best on the depth. No juice, no wiggle, and runs patient when he has none of Kyren's skills.

Chuck Weis

We’re gonna loss some games go forward. Ugg

:pity:

I absolutely hate this take and hope with everything in me Freeman shuts all these types up in the future. If anyone thinks Freeman was going to come in with no HC experience and make no in game mistakes knows nothing about football. Let’s see how he adjusts in the future before lumping him in with Wei’s and others.

Had a chance to ride a tidal wave of positive momentum and feel good vibes for an entire off season, and instead we get this.

There is lots to blame, but who honestly gives a fuck. This is who we are, and this is what we do.

The most disappointing part is if we did win this game, we would probably have finished in the 3-4 range. We all would have been pumped, and died decades from now still remembering the time we beat a shitty Oklahoma State team to finish the single greatest post Lou Holtz season we ever had.

Happy New Year!!!!!

My collection of thoughts.

1. What a great season, exceeded expectations and should end solidly in the top 10. Not bad at all for a rebuilding year.

2. Hate losing that game but for a glorified exhibition that was an exciting watch at least. I thought we would find magic late but it wasn't meant to be. Oh well.

3. The good: A. I think our Oline will be good next year and dominant the year after. Nice parting gift from Mr. Quinn, happy trails!
B. Styles is who we thought he was! Crown him dammit!
C. I can haz a commitment from a top 50 safety for next year? And the current commits chirping about better things ahead? Yes please.
D. Holes, there be holes! Linebackers not very athletic? Good news! Need another RB with some speed? Awesome! Continue building DL depth? Why not! Add a potential lock down corner from the best area in the country? You got it!

4. The bad: A. Flat ran out of gas. Injuries, attrition, not playing for a decade (dates approximate) all added up to a dead team in the second half. If only we had one more elite DB and RB....
B. I hesitate to even put this as bad because I think it's a great starting point, but has to go somewhere. MF has a roster he didn't build playing against a coach that has been his conferences coach of the year a couple of times that has nearly coached for more years since pronouncing he was a man than our HC and OC combined and we went toe to toe with him. Were they an inch away from potentially crashing the playoffs? Yes indeedy and we gave them all they wanted. The way we lost hurt but I think it was a strong debut, just bad because...well.....we lost. I am 100% confident that we will learn from it and be better for it.
C. Holes, there be holes! If all the WRs come back, and we get a portal guy, and we sign another player.....no sugar coating it. That room needs help. Safeties is pretty close but maybe we can paper over that if Foskey comes back.

5. The ugly: Message board meltdowns, I'm embarrassed for all the embarrassment and sore from laughing at all the jokes that we are/were/continue to be etc., etc., etc. Love you guys and the entertainment you bring even though I'm honestly not sure how some posters function at life.

6. On to Ohio State (speaking of an embarrassing half of football, amiright?!?!?!?!)

Brian Kelly wins this game

No, he doesn’t, unless what you’re implying is they the defense would’ve been better with a real DC.

Zero percent chance that Kelly allows Rees to put in that genius first half gameplan. Zero percent chance that a Kelly offense puts up 600 yards on a top defense. Kelly probably loses that game 31-14.

Just got back from the game. Paid thousands so I and 13 others could attend. These losses are a lot more painful in person.

Have to disagree vehemently with those blaming Rees and Coan for the loss. Okie State's defense is ranked #2 nationally this season, 2nd only to Georgia. It's no surprise that we couldn't run on them. 35 points should have been more than sufficient to beat the Pokes, especially with their pedestrian offense. This loss was 100% on our defense.

Coan was our entire offense. We asked him to throw the ball 68 times (a new Fiesta Bowl record), during which he delivered 5 TDs (which tied the existing record). And he did that without any semblance of a run game to lean on.

Coming into this game, our defense was a top-10 unit. How we gave up 600 yards and 30 unanswered points to the Pokes... I have no idea. I didn't expect their OL to beat our DL, but we were regularly losing those battles. Did we even sack Sanders once? We couldn't pressure him, despite the constant blitzing, and he threw no interceptions.

Gotta think we win this game if: (1) KHam or Kyren plays; or (2) Freeman calls the defense.

Failure of a game and once again the college football world is laughing at us. Thought we would come out and win to stick it to our old coach but once again we failed….really don’t know what next year will bring but I’m terrified of Ohio state and USC.

You serious, Clark? BK absolutely wins this game. You’re being harsh with the hypothetical

Let’s hope freeman and Rees see the wealth of errors they made by not being coaches in the second half and just watching and hoping. Very pathetic and they deserve to get some whippings along with the D for taking a total dump in the second half. After a month of eating a dwarves shit sandwich they can get back to making sure they don’t look like a couple of rookies sucking in their binky’s and make some coaching adjustments. On to April and Tyler Buchner who would have opened up the running game like he always did this year.

100% serious. Kelly was always too conservative. Insisted on fair-catching every punt. Would have continued to run into the teeth of that OSU defense rather than let Coan sling it for 500+ yards. 0% chance he beats that defense.

Understood but don’t agree. It’s fucking Okie ST for fuck sake, not Bama

Alright so how would Kelly of made the difference? The offense put up more points and yards on the #2 defense in the country than anyone else. Would Kelly have helped them or helped the D or both? And what would he have done?
