Flint leaving is not good at all. But it’s also probably in the “necessary evil” category if he’s getting their head strength spot and Balis is staying

Yeah, that's the way I see it - you're losing one or the other.

Now being reported as 10 years and 9.5 mil not 10 and 10 or 15 mil

That’s his base without incentives. The incentives are what push it into the reported $15mil range, allegedly.

I’ve had a few hours to calm down about this whole thing and I’ve decided BK is an even bigger bitch than I thought, he quit on his #6 ranked team in the country who could still be fighting for a title run. He had a legitimate legacy he was building at ND and he threw it all away in a matter of 5 hours. I hope he goes down to LSU and gets his shit pushed in weekly. Go Irish! Rant over

let the Marcus freeman era begin

He wanted to be out of here for that type of contract!

Only thing that worries me is Elston has been with BK from his MAC days.....I expect him to follow to LSU

I suspect it's more likely he decides to actually take a G5 head coaching job. Either way it's hard to see him staying to work under a new head coach.

Here's my guess on everything: Kelly and ND had agreed to some form of Kelly retiring at ND within the next few years plan with some of the newly injected blood taking over, back in 2016 this made sense to Kelly and all involved, but then he goes out and succeeds beyond even Kelly's expectations. Now he's invigorated with the desire to keep on as the head boss, but the powers that be know that the only way to keep Freeman and probably just get him here in the first place (the game-changer) is if he becomes HC eventually and sooner than later as people are already calling to gauge his interest in big time jobs like VT. ND tries to tell Kelly that they have to stick to the original script but he thinks he's got more than a few years and sees this somewhat forced end to his career as a bit of a slight. LSU comes in offering big cash and for it to be his show and his show alone and the rest is history.

Kelly will try to keep what he has determined to be his crew at ND (the guys who have a history with him prior to 2016 and/or who he believes are irreplaceable ie Elston, Tommy, etc.), but there are going to be those that are loyal more to Freeman than Kelly (Mickens) and some who know if they stick around they will get promoted internally at least for the time being. (Maybe Elston and Taylor)

The ND admin aren't going to be happy having to promote Freeman sooner than expected, but I think that's what they feel they have to do. They also won't like that a guy like Fickell is out there who would be big, but I think they believe continuity with our recruiting efforts and culture is key. And if you hire Fickell (as good of a hire as that would be) Freeman is outta here and so is half the team and recruits. You have to think, you didn't just fire a guy, you're headed to the playoffs AGAIN (in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year) and your recruiting is on a new level. There is nothing needing to be fixed that you need to hire a "culture changer" or "program builder" like Fickell.

He thinks he can win a title at LSU. They will give him anything he needs to do it. You don’t even need to be a great recruiter there because every HS stud in Louisiana has loyalty to LSU for whatever reason.

irony would be ND getting into the Playoff this year and winning it.

As long as kelly was winning like he is now he deserved to leave when he wanted.

Kelly has ND running like a well oiled machine, sucks he's bolting the way he is but Freeman will do fine. It's always easier to keep the ball rolling than starting from scratch. After listening to the players on Twitter last night, it feels like he was more of a GM anyway... ND is still ND.... Fingers crossed.

Having a single big program in a football loving state is a perfect recipe to keep elite talent at home.

The homerun for me is hire Fickel, retain Freeman, Eslton, and Balis. Some other position coaches would be ok too, but those are the core for me.

Well only thing I can look too is what a mess dantonio left at Mich State and how quickly Mel Tucker has turned things around

I cannot sit through mediocrity for 15 years before they find the next great coach. Keep this train rolling on a one way track. Aint going back.

BK never talked to Swarbrick about the other interests and never gave ND a chance to match. This is mind boggling to me.

It's not really. He didn't want to play ND vs. LSU, he wanted a change of pace before retirement. He looks at Saban and believe he's his equal in everything except the ability to attract any 5 star he wants. He now has no excuses and bet on himself in a different atmosphere.

Now we're all betting on ND being able to take another step. The next coach will be handsomely rewarded and set up with a very well-stocked football team. We need a dynamic recruiter and developer.

You know, my tune is changing here. Last night, though disappointed, I understood it -- go to a place where the last 3 HCs have won a NC and make serious bank doing it. But now, watching this presser, I'm legit pissed at BK for not working with Jack/ND on a succession plan or, at the very least, not giving sufficient notice (when by Jack's admission this has been weeks in the making). For all BK has done over the past 12 years, ND was better than it had been in almost 30 years and now here we are caught with our pants down, looking like clowns, and facing the very real possibility of losing all program momentum because we don't have a plan in place. Fuck this.

I was cautiously optimistic this morning after Assaf's townhall, our assumptions about Freeman getting announced quickly, etc.

Swarbrick's presser destroyed all of that. Maybe he was just refusing to be pinned down on the meaningful stuff, but it looks like the administration was comically unprepared for Kelly's departure despite warning signs, and that they're willing to let the recruiting class fall apart while they run an old-fashioned "head coaching search". Un-f*cking-believable.

He put everything into the past 12 years to build ND to where it is. This sounds to me that he made a unilateral decision to better his family financially and bet on himself to win in the SEC. I don't fault him for that. But it puzzles me he wouldn't go out a little more diplomatically or ceremoniously. He's literally the winningest coach in ND football history and this is how he goes out? This team isn't even mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. He couldn't wait a week to see if ND missed the cut? I'm bitter about this. Thanks for the last 12 years Coach BK, but this rubs me the wrong way.

I picked up on that as well and share the same thoughts. It sounded like Tim O'Malley tried to get JS to clarify something he said too but Jack still side stepped it. Did I hear him correctly in the beginning say that if they did name an interim coach, that person likely wouldn't be a candidate for the HC position?

Yes, that's how I heard it. Baffling how unprepared they seem to be but Jack is also a shrewd man. He may be setting us up for a long play just to name a head coach in the next week. Supposedly they'll begin ranking the interest that came in and reaching out to parties to begin the process. No need to fuck around, there should be jets in/out of South Bend for the next 4-5 days, running red eye until a coach is in place.

Jack must be perceived as not being rushed and show he has done his due diligence.

Freeman will be named soon. GO IRISH!

Can anyone give me a brief synopsis of what JS said in his presser? TYIA

Jack picked up on things the made him believe Kelly was leaving.

Jack said Kelly never gave ND the chance to counter offer and never had talk about him leaving.

Wants to find the right coach not make quick hire. But said it could be tomorrow or weeks from now.

Not interim coach as of right now.

Nothing special other than that. But look like crap.
