I understand that players commit to coaches, not schools. I really do. And I get that the primary reason is for scheme fit and NFL development.

But this is yet another example of why it’s a fool’s errand. You never know what will happen with a coach — whether it’s Urban Meyer on his bullshit, Riley being scared of the SEC, etc. James Franklin was *this close* to also being “that guy”… and this is only going to get weirder with insta-transfers. Caleb Williams basically gets to pick the new Oklahoma coach.

This comes at a great time for Texas. Oklahoma pulls serious talent out of Texas. Sark is going to need it if he’s going to make it happen in the SEC.

Why would they let USC's new starting QB pick Oklahomas head coach?

I have no problem with Riley going to USC, yes they'll probally kill it recruiting wise but Oklahoma has been a thorne in our side lately recruiting too. If I was ND I would stay far and away from California for the next few years. I would focus my resources on Texas, Georgia, Ohio, Florida and the East Coast. I have no problem with USC being good again it actually is good for us in a way that it gives us another game vs a top team. Also with the playoff expansion most likely going to 12 teams a 2 loss ND team with a tough schedule will most likely be one of those top 12 especially if it's losses with a good SOS.

Disagree. You don’t throw away all those relationships w/ HS coaches that were built over the BK era. ND has a long history of pulling great players out of that state and it will continue. Yes, they’ll lose a lot of battles but go look on the current Irish roster and count how many came from Cali.

Going back to 2017 here is what we have landed out of California.
2017:
Jordan Genmark-Transfered
AAron Banks-2 year starter NFL

2018:
Tariq Bracy-Has had a good career at ND
Jarrett Patterson- Has had a good career at ND
Jack Lamb-Transfered

2019:
ISAIAH RUTHERORD- Transfered
ISAIAH FOSKEY- FUTURE NFL

2020: RAMON HENDERSON- CURRENT STARTER

2021: TYLER BUCHNER- NEXT YEAR STARTER?
DEVIN AUPIU- TRANSFERED
CHANCE TUCKER- HASN"T DONE ANYTHING YET
JOSH BRYAN- KICKER HASN"T DONE ANYTHING YET
WILL SCHWEITZER-HASN"T DONE ANYTHING YET

This is what we have over the last 5 years some of these players have had success had ND but my point is how many of these guys do we land if USC was actually good the last 5 years? Point being it will be extremely hard to land anyone decent out of California going forward they'll have their picks of the best.

Well we all know that USC just got significantly more competitive on the trail, but we'll have to see how it shakes out on the field.

And it's not that I don't think that they can be competitive on the field but it's not like Riley has done anything there yet and he has also failed to win the big games with the Sooners dropping two games in the regular season in back to back years now. Again, he might be good and he can clearly recruit, but he stepped into a well oiled machine and had back-to back-to back Heisman-level QBs and has not kept them at the level that you would think a down conference like the Big 12 would allow.

I personally don't want to play into the hype machine they are going to try to make so I wish fans would stop chicken-littling things. I am sure Cali kids expectations are sky high right now, but why the hell should they not be sky high for us? I think we're ready for the next step. Can't let USC try to take that limelight from us.

Is it weird to want USC to be legit so that we can see how good ND is every year? I truly want them to be a perennial top 10 team so that the USC game is a huge clash with national interest every year. Then come playoff team, we never have to listen to "is ND good? Who have they played?" We will know if they're good based on if they beat USC late in the season.

It should be ND's biggest game every year and for many years now, it hasn't been. And purely as a fan, it kind of sucks.

ND went head to head with Urban and won plenty in the state of Ohio. They'll go head to head with Riley in California and win plenty.

Won, some? Sure
Plenty? That's subjective and frankly wrong. Urban is the one who "won" plenty. And some of the ones ND won were where OSU was cooling.

Excellent point. Riley's QB's appear to be regressing.

I stand by plenty. You're never going to win MORE than the state school with a competent recruiter when you recruit nationally. Steal a couple OL from the Midwest, steal a couple skill position players from each coast, and continue recruiting how this staff has always recruited. That's plenty in my book. The whole idea of OSU cooling on players tells me you have to stay off their boards. Just like they cooled on Wagner this year? Nah, he visited and it was clear he wasn't wowed by the OSU glitz and glamour and they stopped recruiting him. They didn't "cool" on him because they didn't want him.

Riley is a better hire than Franklin, but not as good of a hire as Urban Meyer. This really doesn't bother or scare me as an ND fan. He was handed the keys at OU from Stoops. He now has to come in and rebuild an SC program that really hasn't been a factor since Poodle left.

In a couple of years, some billionaire could throw a ton of money at him to come coach in the NFL and SC is back to square one again.

This is a great point. Do we know what Riley's NFL aspirations are by chanc? If he has the bug, seem this plays out one of two ways -- both good for us:
  • He's successful, gets a look in the NFL sooner than later
  • He's unsuccessful, 3-5 more years of SC mediocrity

If Riley really had NFL aspirations, he would have been in the NFL by now. Supposedly Jerry Jones wanted him badly

Ugh. The SC “fans” will be out again here in LA. They haven’t existed for the 5 years or so. They are truly unbearable when SC is winning.

Riley allegedly wasn't interested in jumping ship for SC until OU signed a suicide pact with UT to join the SEC. His interest in taking an NFL gig will likely correlate with how well his transition to the PAC-12 goes. If he hits a rough patch or foresees one coming soon, he may very well follow Carroll and Kingsbury by selling while his CFB stock is still high.

I hope Riley is successful next year and then takes an NFL job leaving SC in shambles again.

Doubt anything ever comes from this but a coach at Oklahoma has been actively recruiting for SC. Crazy shit.

It’s reportedly possible Donte goes back to Washington. Would love to see him burn the place to the ground recruiting wise on the way out

Are we sure Lincoln was hired by the University of Southern Cal and not Southern Cal Junior High?
