This is a conference doing right by their teams. Hasn’t yet worked this year, but if ND was in a conference we would want our league office to pull levers like this. It isn’t unfair, or BS, or conspiratorial. It is a league attempting to gain an advantage for its members.

The others are members of the country club. We have a pass to play on Thursdays after 4, no cart.

Well if that’s true then maybe the conference should worry more about fielding competitive teams as they are becoming the PAC on the east coast. Seems like they have bigger things to worry about than pairing bye weeks against ND

Yeah, if he was healthy and going to play, they would have said so. Now, they still have another week to get him in game shape. But the evasion shows he is not healthy, and word on the street is the opposite of what was on that Pod — he did not practice this past week, he has cracked ribs, and they’re going to shoot him up before the game and see if he can go.

This squares with what I've been able to find.

I get that there's a notion that "Oh, they could just be playing it close to the vest so ND has to prepare for two guys", but I imagine ND is going to fully prepare for what they've seen from Virginia's offense with Armstrong in and adjust as needed for the new guy, since there probably isn't enough legitimate film of him to form a gameplan around.

Doesn't help that the cracked ribs he suffered were apparently on his throwing side. If that's the case, I can't imagine why he'd play. You can be up to your nostrils in painkillers, but that isn't going to do jack to help your core. You need a stabilized core to throw with any sort of power and with cracked ribs, that's pretty much impossible, which is why I was pretty confident he cracked something against BYU, because he clearly couldn't throw the ball with any sort of power after the hit. If it was a bruise, that wouldn't be an issue. We saw Book throw with bruised ribs. It probably hurt like absolute blood hell, but he could do it. Cracked ribs are different story altogether.

Honestly, the play from all conferences this year has been pretty awful.

Even the SEC is really down this year, sans Georgia.

True, true…but Clemson has been carrying the ACC for a while now. No second team; no FSU, no Miami. Those are your traditional horses.

PAC is all USC or Oregon. Stanford on a blue moon.

Both coastal conferences are struggling.

I am so f*ckin tired of all these teams getting their bye week before they face Notre Dame. 3 or 4 teams a year coming off bye facing ND I guess I can live with. But 6 teams this year is ridiculous! That’s half of the schedule. And next is a night game at Virginia with a crowd who have been drinking all day, UVA coming off a bye week while Notre Dame just played Navy and had their legs chopped all day. F*ck that! Jack S needs to be a stop to this going forward.

If that includes the VA coaches and players I'll call that a net positive for the Irish.

I don't blame the ACC for doing it, but I blame ND for allowing it to be done to them. Let's not pretend like ND doesn't bring something to the table here. To use your analogy, there are lots of other country clubs that would welcome us as non-member guests. I think its fair game for ND to remind them of that.

Are there others that align with the university academics and will allow ND to maintain independence?

We probably have some give and take.

Left tackle better be ready for a heavy dose of blitzing. Test the ribs early and often.

That line tells me Vegas thinks Armstrong is a go. If he is he'll have to alter his usual style of play. Like Howell he is not inclined to slide, and he better if he's playing with a rib injury.

Can anyone confirm if this QB has broken ribs or not? Because if so, I’m jumping this 6

Nobody really knows. This was a quick interview from a day ago. He says he’s 100% better LOL. To me, he wasn’t very convincing. Whoever is out there playing blah blah.

Random question: Is Jayden Thomas healthy? I wonder if he might get some snaps here late with the thin depth at WR.

FWIW from Matt Fortuna:

No word yet on Brennan Armstrong’s status for Saturday, but take this FWIW:

Virginia just sent an email ahead of awards season touting his stats, adding: “With upcoming games against Notre Dame (7:30 p.m. ET Saturday on ABC), at Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech, keep an eye on him.”

Idk why I lost my smile at the point in the video where it shows he's a lefty.

I will lose all respect for Kelly and Freeman if they don’t get after Armstrong should he play. I’m not condoning injuring him, but if he’s hurting and is a guy that can beat you, you stick him. This is big boy football.

I don’t want to see anything dirty/excessive from our defense, but if Armstrong plays and we aren’t coming after him and making him second guess whether he should be out there I will be pretty disappointed.

So looking at their schedule and they play Pitt next week. Win that one and they’re in the drivers seat of their division correct? I’m curious to see if they’ll risk Armstrong in a non conference if that’s the case.

This is just a ridiculous take. You really think BK and Freeman could be thinking, "Eh, let's not try to make Armstrong uncomfortable in the pocket. Let's not get to the passer at all this game."

Everything I've heard is that he's going to be a game time call. Basically, they're going to give him treatment before the game and ask him if he can play. I expect him to give it a go.

I also heard that short of additional trauma to that area -- and he'll be wearing rib protection -- that he's not at risk of it getting "worse" so there isn't too much reason to hold him out. It's not like rushing back on a muscle pull.

Pass rush gonna need to really step it up this game.

and not only as it pertains to getting after the QB b/c the Armstrong kid can run w/ the best of the QBs ND has faced. ND is lucky they have faced primarily one-dimensional teams in their eight wins. Seems like first half of schedule’s opponents struggled on offense & the second half struggles on defense.

UVA has the edge on offense but not a huge edge. ND has a bigger edge on defense, this game will be very similar to the UNC game imo.

My concern is our offense not our defense. You have to accept that our defense is going to give up 35+ points given UVA’s style of offense and talent… but you have to expect to score 40+ on them because of their defense. Off a bye week, they will have wrinkles on defense so it comes down to execution. I worry that we will score in the 30s and that won’t be enough. I was extremely disappointed in what I saw from Rees/Coan and their ability to attack drop 8 zone coverage against an unathletic Navy team. Have to think every opponent going forward will show us that look on 3rd down.

I missed the 3rd quarter of the game and haven't rewatched. Did Buchner play at all? It seemed like they had something with him in the first half and then they didn't really go back to him.

Navy did not have answers for him. It was an automatic 5 yards every play.

Point total line is 64. Seems a lock to hit the over.
