I’m a little skeptical that this looks much different that what we’ve seen before. I like the phrasing of it being 1a and 1b but Lea was pretty good at playing the two deep. We had 3 CB’s that played 200 plus snap, 4 S’s, 5 LB’s, 4 DE’s, and 3 DT’s. So, that’s pretty darn close to having a full 2 deep playing about 1/3 of the game.

And that bar is fairly high. It’s 30% of the snaps JOK played who lead the defense in snaps. And, in putting it at 200 doesn’t include players like Kiser, Lacey, Cross, and Mills who most would consider as active players last year.

Freeman mentioned that some of these splits could be 70/30 or 60/40. So, is it really going to be that much different?

It might not "physically" be much different than Lea's sub approach, but "psychologically" it could be (not sure of Lea's philosophy, I'm sure he also coached 1a / 1b mentality".

Regardless, the D's energy is going to be noticeably more loose and fast. This has me crazy excited because Freeman has never had a team with this many 1a's/1b's/1c's....he's going to have fresh legs flying!

Didn’t realize we had that much diversity in snaps but now that I think more about it, I feel that the diversity came from the fact that there wasn’t anyone who took control of spots. For instance, I remember the CB position opposite McCloud and the S position opposite Hamilton were probably the most talked about positions in regards to not being championship caliber performances. That also applies to the Buck position as well. I’d be interested to see what those numbers were for the 18 defense with Lea. I have to imagine Elliot, Gilman, Coney, and Tranquil probably didn’t come off the field much if at all during the season minus garbage time.

According to PFF in 2018, Elliott, Gilman, Love and Pride combined for 3,504 snaps. Coleman, Vaughn, Griffith and Bracy combined for 745. So yeah the DB starters took roughly 80% of the snaps. LB Bilal, Coney and Tranquill combined for 2275. Genmark Heath has 107 snaps and that’s the only above 100 even so even greater disparity. DL is way more balanced.

As alluded to though that group had many “don’t come off the field” type players. DL is always going to rotate. White I don’t foresee coming off the field in situations where the base MIKE is needed but certain packages likely don’t require White’s skill set. WILL is gonna rotate. Hamilton is a don’t come off the field. The question sits with the 2 CBs, Rover, NB, and S how much they rotate out of necessity versus scheme. If theoretically those get locked down what does the split look like versus a 2020 Bracy/Lewis type rotation

An initial UC depth chart for last year listed only two “OR” spots among starters, but both were at LB

Was BVG the last DC to coach from the sideline? I feel like I’m leaving someone out. I know Lea and Elko did not.

It’s gonna be fun seeing Freeman’s energy on the sidelines and how the guys respond to it.

Also, very interesting that it sounds like O'Leary will be the guy in the press box. Sounds like he learned from Lea and there is some trust. I'd say that a pretty big vote of confidence for the first year S's coach.

So if this is correct, is O’Leary then tasked with communicating with Freeman on what he’s seeing with the entire defense, or just the back end? Or will there be multiple personnel? You always see several in the press boxes, and several on the sidelines. I don’t recognize all of them.

Leary will be responsible for the defense overall. Typically the other coaches are tasked with watching a specific group and picking up tendencies from the different formations.

Thank you Irish, and to Lucky’s point that seems pretty significant given the amount of time Freeman and O’ Leary have had to work together.

Actually no. The full clip is on YouTube. I watched expecting something after the word “coach” that would entirely change the sentence and there isn’t. It was the end of his sentence. Maybe he meant he really meant “a” HC or the next African American HC given the context of the conversation (see title of clip) but the clip actually isn’t a fake out really. He might have gotten caught up in his thoughts sitting next to Steph Curry and Vince Carter

It would be stupid to make Marcus Freeman HC in waiting before he even coordinates a game. I'd love him to be the next HC, but odds are that he's not. So if you promised HCIW and had to renege upon that to Coach Freeman, it'd make the Ty firing look like nothing.

Y’all know he’s talented enough and has had his eyes on running his own program. He will be a future head coach, whether that be at ND or elsewhere, he’s a lock in the future.

Well that certainly changes things. Thanks

Maybe the context is "he's gonna be the next [big] head coach," aka the next hot name on the head coaching market?

Ima ask.... why did he say " our DC is black". What was the context Im missing? Was he talking about a lack of AA coaches in the game..?

“Race & Sports in America: Conversations”

The title from the clip. If wanting to understand full context I would just search that on YouTube and pick the one with Steph, Dell, and Vince in the description.

No need to do that I agree. If he does well here and leaves to be a HC, could always get him back to South Bend after Kelly is done and Freeman has gotten some more experience.

Someone on twitter (who watched the whole thing, unlike me) said BK meant "of all our assistant coaches, Freeman will be the next to be a HC".

maybe, that’d be an interpretation but as I said before, the quote really isn’t taken out of any missing context, it’s just poorly worded.
