Uh oh, North Florida is a hot spot. And Jacksonville, is only 164 miles from Tallahassee.is the epicenter.

Florida became the third state in the U.S. to reach 3 million cases of COVID-19, a total surpassed by only 15 countries in the world.

Cases in the state fell very slightly this week, with 150,740 compared to 151,764 last week, but deaths were on the rise. The state saw 1,486 deaths this week vs 1,071 the week before.

Northeast Florida is bearing the brunt of the state's hot spot for COVID, with Baptist Health's five hospitals in the area seeing more than double the number of patients with COVID they saw at the previous peak of the pandemic last summer.

“Jacksonville is kind of the epicenter of this. They had one of the lowest vaccination rates going into July and that has probably really came back to bite them,” Justin Senior, CEO of the Florida Safety Net Hospital Alliance, told the Associated Press.

.

.I hope we can play on Sept. 5th in Tallahassee, but, as they say "hope" is not a strategy..

Tallahasee is in the heart of the Redneck Riviera. It would be a surprise, though not an impossibility, if the Panhandle's vaccination rate is much higher than Jacksonville's. .

Classes begin at Florida State on Monday, August 23rd. They're doing drops and adds now..

It’s gonna suck if the season gets derailed again. Beyond tired of this mess.

I get that everyone is worried about Doak Campbell, but I refuse to believe that we've lost so much that this game will be competitive. Do you guys remember how boring last season was, minus Clemson (and sort of UNC)? How easy the whole season felt, where we barely had a chance to have a high pulse in the second half?

FSU went 3-6 against that schedule, and one of their three wins was against Jacksonville State.

yeah and they cancelled a couple more at the last minute due to COVID, games they were expected to lose.

I'm a little worried about this game. I think FSU's offense will be sneaky good with Milton. QB has held them back for a few years, and if Milton is back to his UCF form then he's a top QB surrounded by some decently talented skill position players and an average OL. First game for a new defense in a new scheme. Usually that favors the offense. So I wouldn't be surprised to see FSU score ~24 points, especially if their strength (passing game) lines up with our weakness (CB).

So then the question becomes whether FSU is still soft garbage on defense, and whether the ND OL can dominate. If so, ND still wins comfortably. If not, ND is in for a dog fight. FSU's defense is largely devoid of proven, NFL-caliber defenders but their best player is a pass rusher who will presumably be going against a true frosh OT.

Prediction right now is ND 34 FSU 24, with it being a one score game well into the 4th.

I've read he's injured currently

It seems neither Milton or Travis is OUT type hurt but the staff may have durability questions or are just super worried they will have injury issues at some point. Milton was back at practice and looked good the other day per reports. Then didn’t practice yesterday and Purdy again was taking snaps. So nobody is injured but at the same time they want QB3 ready. That’s 2 missed practices in a week for someone who hasn’t played in a long time and have ND week1. You have to think it’s for a reason.

I saw practice highlights from Wednesday or Thursday and Milton does not look hurt. On the contrary, he looked more than fine, slinging the ball on the run, rolling out to his left and right.

He's a savvy QB who can make all the throws and improvises well. I agree with LAX, I have a feeling we will be in for a dog fight on the 5th.

The concerns I have for this game are similar concerns I have for every game. It’s game 1 and no one really knows how the game will transpire.

What we do know is that the front 7 is very good and that our weapons on offense are legit. That should win a lot of games this year.

As Charles Barkley famously said before the first Dream Team game, “I don’t know anything about FSU, but FSU is in trouble.”

Barring the usual first game head scratching moments, I feel like this will be a comfortable cover of the spread.

I ended up taking ND -8.5... not very confident in that, but I think the line is pretty soft without proof that FSU has figured it out on defense.

I'm going to take ND as well, but feel that the line might fall even further.

Travis is banged up, not Milton. They are just are making sure they don't overwork him due to his past injuries. Have a buddy who is pretty tied in down there and they say Milton has looked fabulous. This game scares me. They have have the athletes, but has the culture changed enough? We'll see.

Do they have an offensive line? FSU people seem to think that unit is competent now.

Not really. They’re recruiting talent is sub-elite. Third or fourth in the ACC at this time. They have some athletes but not that of someone we still shouldnt view as a inferior opponent talent wise.

I agree, particularly an offense. Their offensive skill talent is very underwhelming to me. They definitely have some dudes on defense.

Yeah, their recruiting has been bad for a few cycles. They have about as much skill talent as a Virginia Tech. But Milton was a beast with mediocre talent around him at UCF, and that's what worries me. First game in a new scheme against a veteran QB making a comeback from devastating injury... going to be a lot of juice in this game.

This can be said for Milton too

At least we can hang our hat on the fact that I don't think he saw too many defenses of our caliber while down at UCF, either. But as you mentioned before, we are breaking in a new system so there could be a few hiccups.

Hopefully we make him very uncomfortable from the get-go. Just have to hope our CBs and safeties can stick with their guys while Milton is improvising.

I'm just getting 2016 Texas vibes, and I hate to draw that obvious/lazy comparison. But a program of FSU or UT's caliber getting a week 1 draw in primetime is always going to be a tough atmosphere.

Indeed. There seems to be an almost knee-jerk reaction from ND fans that "FSU has talent, they might be dangerous". but if you look at their roster they do not have a lot of 4 and 5 star guys anymore. There's been tremendous attrition and their best guys are mostly transfers.

If your best guys are mostly transfers you've got problems with player development, and with all the rotation of coaches, especially co-ordinators this is no surprise.

Managing Milton's work load makes sense but the downside to that is he's not getting the reps he needs with his new teammates.
